It's pretty frankin' easy to avoid that scenario while automatically ignoring annoying hosts. You can automate stupidity, but you can also automate intelligence to a certain degree. Do I really need to state the ways to do this?

It's no coincidence that Linux was first developed for the same hardware platform as DOS.

The common factor here is the PC, not MS.

  8. A *Real* Computer Scientist on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1

This post goes beyond "I program, therefore I am a computer scientist." Please bear with me. You do not need a university if you're motivated and you know what to study. Concrete Mathematics, The Art of Computer Programming, and Introduction to Algorithms make a good list to help you *begin* your studies. Other texts are available, just talk to people who are in the kinds of programs you admire to find out what they use. Read the course requirements for respectable CE/CS courses and pursue the materials that will help you learn the same concepts. You can more strongly specialize or broaden your studies by using pieces of several different courses as your guide. Finally, challenge yourself to create something new & broadly useful. It better be nifty! Be honest with yourself! You do not need someone else to grade your work if you are a real computer scientist. You do need someone else to grade your work if you are a real fiend for money.

Well, it is impossible to provide truly objective ratings for web content, but any "fact rating" could be weighted by a "controversy rating". You could even conduct scientific polls to create a somewhat worthwhile "controversy rating".

OpenBSD man pages are very complete and informative. Info isn't necessary, but people think it is because many systems have crappy man pages. I am not going to post this anonymously. If I can't say it under my username, it isn't worth saying.

Do we really have it better? I've traveled and I will admit that many places are quite a bit different than the United States, but different != worse. In fact, many people in other countries seem to be as patriotic about their countries as many Americans are about theirs. It really boils down to what you like, not whether a country is better or worse than others. (aside from some very definitely unpleasant places)
