obviously, dispite the rewrites, the coders never got a clue, lets they break the applications, since they depend on non-protected memory. I relize that MacOS X or whatever will have this, but it's still somthing like 6 years since windows 3.1.... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
*sigh* although most slashdot users usualy have a clue, you might end up with an idiot, as clearly evidenced by your post... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Actually, while I'm sure John Carmack knows assembly language pretty well, I think his 'godliness' comes more from his vision then his being able to tweak the code. During the quake 1 days, he actually had Mike Abrash (sorry, I mutilated the name there...), the guy who wrote 'the Zen of code optimization' and 'the Zen of VGA graphics' working to speed up the code.
In fact, with new games like q3a, they aren't even bothering to optimize there code very much at all. This is because about 70% of the CPU time is spent in the graphics driver not the game. The optimizations in quake don't come from hand-coded assembly, but from really ingenuitve ways to create the effects.
If you're making 3d games, and there running extremely slow, assembly code isn't going to help. Hire some real programmers. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Actualy, all the other ports for the other games were 'unsupported' and, in some cases done by third parties. Q3a is the first one that's going to work out of the box on all three platforms.
As for why he's doing it? Well, he 'says' it's for the money, but I'd be willing to bet there's more to it than that. Remember, these guys basically destroyed Direct3d's inherent dominance. Id software is doing a lot of harm to Microsoft. Because of there use of Open GL, it's now standard. It would be much, much more difficult to port a lot of these games to anything if it weren't for the availability of GL on the windows PC. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
I think the fact that "IT" or "Information technology" is such a hyped term in our world, and espesialy for MIS type people that it's perfict to describe the "Neo suits". Or perhaps to describe the clueless 'psudo-geeks' or 'psudo-hackers'.
These people are some of the most annoying people on the planet. While I don't have a problem with the term "information technology" the way I have a problem with MIS people, I think the fact that "its" corrosponds with "Ironed Teeshirts" and "information technlology" works well. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
so does evolution. I mean, where did the material for the original things that everything evolved from come from
Who cares?
Evolution doesn't seek to explain the entire existence of everything. It only seeks to describe how species arise from other species. Evolution by itself doesn't even try to explain the creation of life (the theories on that are called ambiogenisys) "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
? No-one can authoritively say "this is right", because no-one really knows for sure... so theoretically, neither should be taught !! but, 'evolution/big bang' is SCIANCE so it should be taught in SCIANCE class. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"

In general, the only difference between a law and a theory is that a LAW can be described by a formula, I don't remember the formula for gravity, but it's something like F = G*m1*m2/d^2, (force = the gravitational constant times the mass of both objects with the whole thing divided by the distance of the objects squared), or I could be wrong though (esp. about the squared part).
Obviously, you can't derive a mathematical formula for evolution, but it doesn't make it any less true. In fact Newton's theory of gravity, what you were probably taught it school is 100% false. When you're dealing with speeds nowhere near the speed of light, and with objects about the size of atoms, it yields pretty accurate results. When you remove those restrictions, however, the thing falls apart. So, in fact Evolution is much more true then Gravity "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
No one ever argues the inconsitances in gravity, beacuse it's been disproven. at least, newtonion physics has turned out to be incorect, although close. Also, gravity dosn't effect subatomic particals in the same way.

The thing is, 'gold' is an artifical currency as well, the only reason people want it is beacuse it's 'worth' somthing. sure, it makes a good conductor, but it costs about 600 times as much as silver for that purpose.
also, using gold instaid of paper wouldn't negate all the 'lending' going on. instaid of 92% virtual dolars, we would have 92% of the economy being virtual gold.
I'd like to see the economy survive loosing 92% of itself... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
is that you can *already* get all the software you want off the internet, just hang out on IRC. Its a little time consuming, but it's not hard at all.
People pay software beacuse they can afford it, and they ether don't know, or don't care about downloading it "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
that would cost almost $2,000!!! remember, this guy wants to do it inexspensively, I don't care what you say about iMacs, but they are not cheap. from what I've read on these posts, icecast on linux would probably work, with maybe a second box for encoding the live stream. any low end intel would do, and you can get two x86s for less then $1,000. and pluss they want to use mp3s, not qt4. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Does be have mp3 servers? or even good email/web servers (sendmail/apache)?
BeOS is mainly a single user OS from what I've heard, It may be solied but I don't know if it makes a lot of sense as a server right now.
NT would cost a lot of money for a server licens, over a thousand dolars. remember the workstation version limits you to only 10 simultanious Server links (is there a reg hack to get around this?)
I don't think the SMP code in linux is that bad. It may not be as good as NTs, but it'll work "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
I'd like to see a MacOS 8 box serve web pages, email and stream mp3s. Linux lets you get work done, lots of it. unfortunetly for Mac zelots, it requres some mental capacity... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Linux is based on ideas that are 30 or so years old mac OS IS 15 years old. and it sucked then to. It uses the exact same model, wheas with linux/unix only the APIs and the UI have stayed constant (with new APIs comming out for advanced features) "Subtle mind control? Well, 98 is a lot more unstable then linux, my 98 box usualy can make it about a day and a half without crashing... winamp, and my TV tuner card software seem to really like to kill it.
98 isn't that stable, but one to two days of uptime isnt' that bad ether. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Is it anything like "Nazism"? You know with Hitler and the swastikas, and the killing? That's what the context would lead me to believe...
seriously, just because ESR didn't spell check his document doesn't mean we should just start adopting misspellings as new words.
I don't have a problem with people making spelling errors, I make them all the time, but I don't want to see people repeating them... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"

Quake II and q3test are two instances of a performance improvement over the Windows ICD version.
Gee, I wonder why....
"Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
...I respect John Carmack and Linus more than any other individual... first of all "John Carmak and Linus" are two individuals, not one.
. Also, I have to say that Quake3 is by far superior to UT. I use nothing but linux and Q3 is fucking pimp in it and pimp period. Good work JC.
I'm sure statements like this make johnC sleep easy at night...
