It shouldn't take that long, even on a 386, unless. I booted up windows 95 OSR1 on my computer with the l1 catch diabled (it benched as fast as a 386dx40), and it only took about two minutes "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
wow, talk about microsoft paranoia. The author never once mentioned windows NT, not once. He only made vague refrences to windows on the 'low end'. to me, that means windows 95/98. The comparisons were mostly to solaris, on the high end. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
And - considering that the only comparison he made in his article, was to NT/Microsoft, I didnt feel it was appropriate to bring *ANOTHER* os into the mix.
He made comparisons to BeOS, solaris, SunOS, and windows 9x. he never mentioned NT in the artical, not once.
what made you think he did?
"Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
The artical was about linux, not free Software in general. he prased apache at the same time. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
It looked to me like he was talking about eBay's *BACKEND*, not the front end. and he never did mention NT, not once. as far as I know, nither NT nor Linux could handle that much hardware, under those kinds of loads.. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Just buy a really nice one. My Acer79g cost me $370 for just 17inces, but man, it was *so* worth it:) (120mhz refresh at 1024x768:) "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Well, I'm not bored with tetris, and nither are very many other people. Millions of people have monocrome gameboys, with 8-bit 10(?)MHz CPUs. they seem to be fun, If you can't have fun with simple games anymore, that's to bad. Many people can. Two player tetris on the Gameboy or a graphing calculator is very fun, and I would love to be able to do this over a CDMA network. To bad Cellphones arn't as widespread here in the US as they are in other industrialized nations:( "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Why is it any more dangerous to have a portible gaming system that is capable of online wireless gaming then one that is not? I mean, somone could try to play GameBoy while driving, but they won't. beacuse almost all games require two hands.
Just beacuse people like to talk on the phone while driving dosn't mean that they are any more likely to play games on there cellphones then they would be on there game boys, or palm pilots "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Well, you can already merge the cellphone and the pager, and soon the palm piolot as well... If you ask me, pagers are the most worthless hack
technology I'v ever seen, I mean, if you ignore the cost issue, theres no reason to page someone when you can just ring up there cellphone.
But, or course there *is* the cost issue, and people need to live with that, new CDMA cellphones in the US usualy have pager capabilitys, I don't know what there using in AU (GSM?), but I'd bet you could find one with a pager...
I heard about some company licensing the palm OS for a cell phone, that would rock, I think you can get a pager card for the palm as well "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Although, I doubt if this type of technology will make it to the US... Maybe it will though.
I mean, For me, I probably have more fun playing video games "on the go" Then I do at home. A gameboy, or graphing calculator (ti8x are the best:) Can be so much fun to play, and now you could play not only multiplayer, but multiplayer with anyone in the world (provided they have the same phone, and service)
One thing I'd have to ask, however, is how much is this going to cost? I mean, Cell Phone calls arn't cheap, and I'd be willing to bet that the charges on this would at least be similar to the old charges of AOL, a couple bucks an hour, if not more.
Still good for a quick game of tetris though:) "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
dude, 16 year olds don't buy software at all. Anyone with any technical skill is just going to 'aquire' the stuff:).
I'd bet that anyone with the technical skills to install (or even know about) Linux could probably get all the CSS software they wanted for the same cost... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Wow, I'm glad you decided to post you're completely uninformed opinion as a root post. We need more people like you!
The comment section is for comments about the story, if you don't read the story, then you can't really comment on it, can you? And no, you were completely wrong in your guess. And I'm sure Microsoft would love to replace bill gates, sure. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Oh, come on. Linux *users* aren't that bad. Do you hate Neil Stephenson?
It's not the users; it's the Zealots. I've had the displeasure of getting into an E-mail argument with a Mac zealot over FireWire (hey, Harry Zink!), and let me tell you there all idiots. Mac zealots, Linux zealots, Amiga zealots, BSD zealots, any 'minority' operating system seems to breed them. People to immature to realize that different things have different qualities, and different qualities attract different people.
Please don't judge Linux, or Linux users in general based on the most vocal minority. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
the MSRP is not $370, that's the price when converted into american dolars. The price *in* the US will be much diffrent. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
remember, sony dosn't make any money when they sell a console, so if you buy one, and only play pirated games, sony looses money "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
well intel isn't *going* to make the chips for the PSX2, so what does it matter what they can do?
also, teh console isn't going to be reliced untill "sometime next year". Next time, try to do some thinking before you post.... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"

q3a takes more then 64 megs of ram to run correctly. John carmak wrote the code to wolfensitn, doom, quake and all subseqent derivitaves. I seriously doubt that you're a better programer then him "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Although there are 'consumer' DVD standards for recording (dvd-rw dvd-ram) none of those can produce 'true' DVDs. If you wan't to be able to do that, you'll need a $10,000 or so Dvd-r burner. so, you'd be caught up with the price of buying games after you burn 200 games.... "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"
Well, they might could use a software switch (maybe even make it dynamic). I'm sure it could be done, some of the psx emulators did this.
also, psx titles arn't being *emulated* there being *run* just like when you run that old dos program on youre new PC. "Subtle mind control? Why do all these HTML buttons say 'Submit' ?"

Netscape, and Outlook express 4/5 have spellcheck, as does hotmail's web-shell
it's a pretty common feature
