just to let you know, I have close to 9gigs of.oggs (and growing everyday), at last count I have under 1.2gigs still in.mp3 - and NONE of my mp3's are music - they are all very-low-bitrate audio books.
I know that my stats are an anomaly because I do not download mp3's from the internet. Too many idiots (in the past, unsure about today) used the wrong settings (or worse yet the wrong encoder) when uploading music. This has created a VAST number of sh17 mp3's that are being shared out there today.
I recall recently reading an oncology (cancer) report that indicated that the human brain does in fact GROW NEW NEURONS throughout life (haven't seen an online version.) The report summary indicated that the brain loses the nerve connections during the day and re-grows them at night.
A seperate study also showed that the popular anti-depressent prozac makes changes to this neural re-growth.
Further to how this tie's into Ask Slashdot - Neural re-growth normally occurs ONLY DURING REM STAGES OF SLEEP.
This (likely) explains the many reports of people hallucinating after long periods of REM sleep deprivation - A waking brain loses connections in that section and when enough connections are lost - mental coherency is lost.
There you have it folks - a reason for WHY sleep is needed

P.S. - An interesting thing about modafinil (often given to sufferers of sleep apnea - It has demonstrated the ability to restore brain function similar to good REM sleep. I *STRONGLY* suspect that it acts on the brain stem the same way as REM sleep - promoting neural regrowth.
AMSDELL sells the IPPS commander, a 200 watt UPS power supply that fits a standard ATX form factor.
I have used one very happily for 2+ years now. w/o the monitor plugged in I get about 18 minutes runtime and with my 17 inch monitor drawing I get about 9 minutes runtime. YMWV
Don't know about other form factors or other power ratings.

Find a food Mantra that works for you - The one that works for is I make sure my carb intake is 5% of my daily calorie intake and that my fat intake never falls below 60% total calories. These magic numbers have enabled me to be fitter than I was in my teens and early twenties. (and lighter too)
What to eat: anything that walks, twitches, crawls, flies or swims.
What not to eat: Any fat that is hydrogenated! Anything that is starchy or indigestible raw. This includes potato, wheat, corn, soya, peanuts, cashews, most beans etc.
My typical day.
Breakfast: bacon and/or steak and eggs, some berries. Lotsa water, some vitamins.
snack: seeds like almonds etc, more watter
Lunch: Tuna with lots of olive oil or some mayo, more water.
snack: more seeds like sunflower or macadamia etc.
Supper: steak, fish, chicken etc plus lots of colourful vegggies that are NOT STARCHY. More vitamins, plus lots more water.

All materials that are currently examined for contractile action to applied current suffer from a fundamental flaw - fatigue failure. Materials are engineered to withstand X load under Y cirumstances with Z tolerance for T time. Exceed that and the device will fail catastrophically. Living tissues actively repair themselves when wearing out. As long as the tissue isn't completely destroyed it will recover.
The real question is: How can a contractile material be developed to withstand and
recover from fatigue related failures similar to a muscle?
