Modern designs are quite different from those in the late 1980's, so much so that modern laptops look almost identical outside of the branding. Surely statistically, given the number of experiments done with lab-rats we're much more likely to produce a race of super-intelligent lab rats.
Rats would also have more of a desire to wipe out humanity... after all we keep giving them cancer. I'm holding onto my movie-fund budget until Hollywood releases "Planet of the lab rats"
