  1. Infrastructure Improvement to Boost Economy on Building a Town-Wide LAN? · · Score: 1

I think the goal of this project, as with most public infrastructure improvements, is to attract new businesses to the community. Improving the internet service to the existing community is probably not the main motivating factor for the proposal.

Hanover is a relatively prosperous enclave in the middle of a fairly unprosperous and somewhat remote region. So far, that has been one of the contributing factors to limiting the College-spawned High Tech enterprises that arise around other institutions of Dartmouth's caliber. I'll bet the computer scientists and engineers at Dartmouth are itching to spin off their research. Having a high speed data infrastructure in place would certainly mitigate some of the disadvantages of starting a company there. This would improve the regional economy, and, hopefully, create a expansive spiral.

This, of course, will be opposed by some people who are afraid of ruining the atmosphere of the upper valley. I, personally, am of two minds. I'm a Dartmouth alum, and would love to work in Hanover, but how much can it change an still retain it's attractive features?

Remember, HP isn't only hardware; they have a large share of the systems management software market (Openview), and a consulting group as well. If you count all the Openview agent licenses for Linux boxes (which aren't cheap), plus consulting income, plus embedded linux revenue, $2B seems within reach.

Where are you buying software? CNET's shopper.com lists Windows 2000 Server w/ 5 CALs for $700-$900. That's why they picked this price point.

  4. that call in the middle of the night on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

I'm a sysadmin at a still struggling, but funded, start-up (which makes me better off than most people), and I've just about decided to leave. The (chancy) prospect that there's going to be a pay off on my options no longer outweighs the hassle of 24x7x365 on call. A phone call or page in the middle of the night used to mean someone died - now it means that the latest rev from the developers wasn't tested completely before installation. And we laid off our QA department.

Actually, I've been trying to find a used copy of True Names for years, with not much luck. Used copies run $90+ on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
