    Maybe it's only version 1.0. How long have Apple had to refine their site? 5 years with iTunes? Nokia are starting largely from scratch.

    Well, it's designed to be as generic as possible. People use different names for everything. Host, server, machine, node, box then you have different types, linux, sun, windows. then you have networking kit, switches, routers etc etc etc. A configration item is just something which the database stores some configuration.

    You don't have to try to implement all of the stuff at once, you'd be mad to try, but if you start at what sounds like the most important for you, like service portfolio and configuration management you will have solved your current problem.

    p.s. my consultancy rates are very reasonable.

    So the attacker hashes the passwords he's trying. It would really only be useful if the attacker was unaware your password was a hash. Which means it's no use for company policy.

    but people are remarkably resilient as a species

    Oh the species would survive, but without clean running water, and with just in time deliveries to stores, there is only a few days worth of food in any store, there would be a mass die off of people within a month or two. Only a small percentage would survive.

    The Internet was designed to survive a nuclear attack.

    Right... In theory the comms protocols might be routable. Pity about the power supplies.

    If I'm going to nuke you. I'll be aiming at your energy systems as well as control. The USA has for example about 30 days of fuel stored. Kill all the power stations as well and just about everything will stop just about instantly. It's one of those pesky details that authors and film producers like to gloss over.

    Against humans, those who aren't killed in the blasts, most will die of thirst and hunger within a month without the current infrastructure supporting them. Though, of course, there is always cannibalism.

    You can pretty much do anything you can think of with it, in IT terms.

    Windows... Mac... Not so much. Sure you can beat them into shape after buying a bunch of addons of varying expense... They're designed for specific markets, they're great in their niche, but outside they are a pain.

    You want a 100,000 machine cluster? With linux you can. You want a pocket pda/phone. With Linux you can. Not only you can, but YOU can.

    Imagine some benefactor had given you a garage with all the tools and materials you could ever need. For free. Wouldn't that be cool? Think of the things you could do with it. That's Linux. Windows in comparison is a Ford sedan. You use it for travel.

    Manure was used as fertilizer before they invented the Haber-Bosch process.

    Manure is still used as fertilizer even after they invented the Haber-Bosch process. The population of the world was much lower before they invented the Haber-Bosch process. There were 90 million Americans in 1909. You're only hoping for a 2/3, 200 million die off then?

    Nitrogen fertilizers have allowed us to increase the carrying capacity of the land... Without them, we have rather too many people.

    The ideal biomass production scheme? Grow water hyacinth in ponds of untreated sewage. Make cellulosic ethanol from that, or else just burn the biomass to power steam turbines.

    You're making a choice between food and energy again. Do you put the sewage on the land to increase consumable crop productivity for food or do you produce energy with it?

    Nitrogen based fertilizers hugely increase the productivity of arable land. Rice (the staple for most of the world) productivity up 50% for example[1].

    So... No fertilizer... 30% drop in human population... Or, put another way. 100 million Americans.
