  1. Re:Web Host Guild (WHG) on On The Subject of Web Hosting · · Score: 1

I too think a professional association for web hosters is a good idea.
I was suitably impressed when I saw that CIHost were a charter or founding member of this guild and that was influential in me chosing to host with them. (I presume we are talking about http://www.whg.org/index.htm here)
Since then I have had problems with CiHost as have 10s of thousands of others.
Now I see that although cihost home page (http://www.cihost.com/) still has a link to them the WHG's pages no longer make any mention of Cihost at all, whereas a month ago they featured prominently.
CiHost have also been removed from the list of Charter members (members who founded the organisation). Now tell me how do you stop being a founder member of something. Either you are or you aren't. If the WHG has a problem with CIHost then perhaps it should explain.
In the mean time my opinion of them has gone down the tubes along with the hosting review sites. They have clearly failed to give a credible guarantee as to the quality of service of their members and that stands for all the other sites they recommend as well.

    I agree!

I don't like this advice at all.

I'm hoping somebody will come up with a clear explanation of how to avoid this one.

I entirely agree with this post. I'm sure following it would be sensible.
The problem I realy wanted to raise though is that it's not just a question of finding a competent reliable hosting company.
I was trying to find what options sites themselves had of increasing their resilience to their hosting companies failing.
I further wanted this to be advice that did not presume that the user was a unix hacker
Some posts mistakenly suggest that this is a problem only with 'cheap' hosting companies. This is false. Even those paying for 'expensive high quality' hosting (in quotes) should be asking themselves these questions.

Yes that's correct. I spotted it shortly after I wrote the article.

    Your point is well made.
I have only said that the compensation offered was acceptable to me. Given that it was me that proposed this upgrade as reasonable redress for damage caused (in my case) I believe I should accept it.
It only takes a short read of the news groups to see that others do not agree, either because their sites were more critical or because they still have outstanding problems.
So far my sites are back on the air and I have been offered the compensation I asked for.
If either the compensation is not forthcoming or there is any repeat of the damage I will move immediately.
I'm sorry to hear you are still having problems.

  6. CiHost compensation. Email from the CEO. on The CIHost Saga Continues · · Score: 1

After all the problems I had with CIHost during december and into january I wrote to Christopher Faulkner the CEO and stated that I believed CIHost should compensate me.
I indicated that I would accept as compensation an upgrade from the 'special' package I originaly signed for in february of last year to their 'special' as now advertised at the same price. The current special includes more than double the disk space and ten times as many emails as my original package.
I also indicated that if he did this I would regard it as adequate compensation for the inconvenience caused and would be happy to post to the news group and to slashdot to that effect.
    In his reply he says.
This has been done and will be done for EVERY C I Host client beginning tonight. So you can post that if you dont mind in the flame group where you are posting other things. I would GREATLY appreciate that. Again, every C I Host client will be given a no cost upgrade to our current special listed at www.cihost.com/specials.html
This is not very friendly but **is** a clear statement that cihost will upgrade not just me but **all** clients to the current special at no cost. He further indicated that James Miller james@cihost.com was handling this.
As mentioned above I regard this as reasonable compensation for the downtime I have suffered and I intend to accept the offer.

I thought you might appreciate this snippet from an email I received on Sunday from Christopher Faulkner CEO of CIHost.
    I quote.
"Again, please accept my sincerest apologies for what took place and I can assure you it will not happen again!"
Less than 48 hours later all my sites went off the air again. They are still down.

Nerds not so worried then when tens of thousands of sites get wiped from the net. Email gone as well. Slashdot shouldn't bother about that?
