the people with the power do absolutely none of the work
Fixed that for you.
But on a more serious note, I work above a warehouse for an import company. The owner is a multi-millionaire Chinese ex-pat. It's pretty damn sobering to see him weeding, sweeping and driving a forklift when he has time. He doesn't have to, and he's not doing it to motivate his staff. For him, it's just the right thing to do.
We're trying to get a reasonably complete picture of your household and what the individuals who live there like to do
I like to have my privacy respected. I've willingly shared this information with Acxiom, but apparently my primary interest isn't valuable for Acxiom to understand. Companies like Acxiom deserve to have their corporate systems pillaged and this data handed out willy nilly to whomever the pillagers associate with.. without recrimination. Because this is PRECISELY how Acxiom operates.
If our political systems weren't so ridiculously corrupt, Acxiom's board and upper management would have been against the wall long ago. It's about time that companies like Acxiom were targetted by righteous hackers and their corrupt business practices exposed for the entire world to see.
The waters are muddied by the ideas of 'Open Source' vs 'GNU'. TFA talks about 'Open Source' and that shouldn't be confused with free.
The companies aren't necessarily praising the freelance open source developers, they're praising the cost savings of developing across companies and (perhaps) with the help of GNU developers. But this isn't praising the 'My Time is Free' developer, it's praising the bazaar development model. Of course, software developed under collaboration is going to develop faster and more robustly because there's more people working on it.
It doesn't mean that the software is going to be better. That's why companies like Google are writing the software, then giving it to 'Open Source' for on-going maintenance. But this trend isn't going to continue into the future. However hopeful GNU developers are about the future of GNU, it's only there right now because there's so many hobbyist developers out of professional work who can afford the time to throw at it. Want to help companies write the software? They're not gonna say no.. that doesn't mean that GNU is taking over the world.
This is about open source, there's nothing GNU here.
Is riding on the autobahn in heavy, heavy traffic. 5 lanes, no speed limits. The left lane was doing 70kph, second left 80, 90, 100 and the right lane was 'as fast as you want'. If someone in the right lane saw somebody bearing down on them, they switched one lane to the left and let them past. But you hardly saw anyone driving above 120, and I didn't see a single soul above 130. The car doing 130 was a brand new Porsche on a flat straight stretch of road... a perfectly safe speed for such a car.
All lanes moved smoothly, if you needed to change lanes.. just flip on the indicator and the next person let you in. Nobody cutting people off, driving aggressively or getting frustrated. Everyone was driving very sensibly and patiently, with 60% of the people driving slower than what the marked speed limits would say if you were in Australia.
If you can drive however fast you want.. you make a conscious decision on how fast you want to drive. Give someone a limit and they react to that limit. Either by driving right on it, exceeding it or being aggressive toward others driving in their own way in relation to the limit.
Speed limits are a mechanism of control. They're designed to fill your head with ideas that you otherwise wouldn't have were you thinking without limits. The limits don't limit the speed of the car, they impact the mind of the driver. The more troubled the mind of the driver, the greater the impact of the limit. Roads are unsafe because of the impact of speed limits on drivers, not because of drivers exceeding speed limits.
It is possible to be concerned about the impact of environmental changes because of the impact they will have on one's grandchildren
You're saying that you care about the impact the planet has on you, not vice versa. It's time to recognise that 'harm to the Earth' isn't abstract and you (and your grandchildren) are co-dependant upon the Earth for your survival.
The derision at the end of your post does you and the environment a disservice.
I'm surprised about how Slashdot seems so overwhelmingly anti-science on this issue
I've seen so many studies in the last 2 years debunking the co2 theory that there's no way the premise could be true. Yet we still see this special interest group 'science' coming out and widely promoted by the mass media. If the facts don't fit the theory, it's not the facts which are wrong.
The whole co2 climate change field is just being used to promote fear as a distraction from the truth.
Nobody seems to focus on the real problem here, talent isn't genetically inherited.
Let's take Bill Gates as an example. He's been incredibly successful. Will his son follow in his footsteps? That's unlikely. But his children end up getting the best support, the best education and the best opportunities. Meanwhile, Manny at the local grocery store has a son Terry whom is as talented as Bill Gates. Terry doesn't get the opportunities of Bill's son so winds up becoming a street corner entrepeneur. By the time he's 20, Terry owns 3 crack houses, 4 brothels, is driving massive demand for international trade, has a workforce of 300 people and is a multi-millionaire.
Terry is just using his gifts in the best way he can, and because he's so damned smart.. he accomplishes amazing things and doesn't end up in jail. The end result is that society is less rich for not encouraging Terry's gifts. It's not that the rich are taking the education spots, it's that society doesn't recognise and encourage the gifts of individuals. Bill's son might be the greatest basket weaver in human history, he's just never going to weave a basket.
The education system forces people into boxes and tries to shoe-horn them into positions which fit with our current identification of what society represents. What society should represent should be driven by the individual drives of the people expanding it's boundaries, not by limiting the range of education to fit into a social model which has never not been broken. It's not about the money, it's more fundamental than that.
however it doesn't warrant an increase of 10^3 magnitude
The real trick in a capitalist democracy is to figure out what would warrant that sort of an increase then start a marketing company to seel people on the idea.
.. at what point does the critical mass of players get below a certain threshold that only the die-hards will remain?
That's the problem with MMO's. You're really there to play with others. When there's no new players coming in and the world is only getting bigger, there's less and less people to play with so it's less and less fun so there's less and less people playing.. eventually, it must die. The only realistic way to keep an MMO running is to cater to the new players. The game can't be easy, but it's got to be accessible.
I pretty much played the gamut of DDO for about 3 years. WOW will probably do the same thing, eventually it'll be FTP and a whole bunch of people will join then they'll slowly lose interest as the devs keep catering to the 'subscribers' rather than trying to attract new players. Ultimately, the service is a service to play games with other people. If you don't concentrate on attracting other people, well..

Facebook recently partnered with Acxiom
Between the devil and the deep blue sea
I worked in a project with them for years
Something tells me you're about to get arrested and electro-shocked to erase Acxiom's corporate secrets.

taking your servers elsewhere is always an option to consider
If only someone could figure out how to do that without unplugging the servers, they'd be rich.
And this is why using the cloud is good... for the business: you are going to be charged double for everything.
Fixed that for you.

Phew, glad I didn't have to point that out to you.

Don't say it so loudly, you'll provoke someone to write a paper on it!

Beef production produces huge amounts of methane which is a big contributor to climate change
Sorry, got to call bullshit on that one.
expect McDonald's to start quietly using it

I love this concept. It's the first phone-to-tablet-to-PC concept I've seen that feels somewhat complete
It's great that you like it, it'll remain somewhat complete for the forseeable future.
there is nothing to run on it
You'd enjoy running several things on it:
1. Water
2. Wild Elephants
3. A Marathon
There's probably other things, but I haven't used it yet.
I give Ubuntu five years before Microsoft pumps and dumps them
Well, Microsoft has proven that they sometimes make really bad decisions.
Now, if you want to call reality only to what is sold, is up to you, people is free to fool themselves
Indeed, people are entirely free to fool themselves.
It's worked out well so far
I beg to differ, check this out!
Is Ubuntu worried about becoming obsolete?
Of course not. They're actively pursuing it.
