Mod parent up. They simply fail to understand that moves like this only encourage pirates rather than get them to pay any sort of royalty. After all, why would anyone actually want to make these scumbags any more money? So that they can sue someone I may know for millions of dollars? I would much rather not pay for the privilege of a "compilation CD" and simply pay for the ability to make my own lists online, without anyone having to get sued (or even having to fabricate useless plastic disks) in the process. BTW, what the hell is a "compilation CD"? All music CDs are compilations of some sort, right?

Modern hard drives (particularly drives made for mobile devices) have built-in accelerometers that should move the heads away from the platters if they are experiencing a free fall. Of course, this is not a guarantee of anything, but it should decrease the odds a bit. More info on that here.

OK, here's my final attempt at clearing this up for you: By opening up your PS3 you have an inexpensive way to cover all your bases when shopping for a PC. You get much more bang for your buck with a PS3 as opposed to a comparably-priced PC (ie better hardware specs, silent, lots of community support, etc). BTW, You could install all the Linux-y stuff on an external drive so as to retain your ability to play games if you so wished. All one would need to do is boot from the external drive by plugging it in a USB slot. Pretty cool for $250 (used), wouldn't you agree?

How about a kick-ass media center for starters? Remember that really cheap ps3's will be available in a few months, so it's not completely unlikely that some people will be able to buy a spare unit (or two) to tinker with.
