But really -
Three reasons:
1) Flying is more complicated than driving. People don't want complicated. We also don't want people doing complicated things as they'll inevitably crash due to checking their facebook updates whilst flying.
2) Safety - This is kind of an extension of number one. People are already stupid enough when they're behind the wheel of a car.
3) Space - This one might just need a bit more engineering. But so far, we're still making the plane itself too large, with not enough room for people/luggage.
