Spam Conference Reports
As long as people are willing to push spam and people are willing to pull out there VISAs for products contained in spam, the problem will never go away. We need to start educating the newcomers to the internet that don't know better or help the people who can't contain themselves from impulse buys. ISPs should have a newcomers guide. What is SPAM and why you should avoid it. The work from home spammers are the equivalent of street pushers. The war on drugs hasn't been successful in stopping these criminals, what makes us think we can. They are inticed by the quick cash. And the addicts are inticed by the crap they buy. The only thing left is to fix SMTP and create end-to-end accountablility. Then sit back and wait for the next version of Spam to be developed. And start the cycle all over again.
Good use of a double negative. AOL IM is a pain but not difficult to get rid of. Sometimes you just have to say hay I got this for free so I should not complain.
Yes I agree loc as a benchmark is ridiculus. When I programmed CGI-Scripts for a company in perl one year during school I wrote 100's of lines of code a day. Becuase it was easy. Not to bilittle my task. I worked on serveral projects at once. I also was incharge of system scripting.
Never the less I think the type of people who read/. all subscribe to the hacker ethic and really enjoy coding. I know I do. But the survey matching loc was just an indicator a broad slice. Our we Lazy coders? no I don't think so. Our there Lazy coders in the US? You better believe it. Come and work for the company I am about to leave. Most people just have a job cause it is good money. They would not even dream of writing code outside of work. It just isn't fun for them. So they drag their feet. I think our state schools producing degrees in computer science for people who are half wits is a bigger problem. Companies who need people just hire degrees cause they are desperate. Therefore people know they are going to have it easy slack off and surf the web. Or they over estimate projects for each other and milk the clock.
I am hoping this will sum it all up. Sony doesn't exactly make money off of their consoles in the beginning because they have years of developement costs to pay off. SO they have to sell a certain amount before they can make there money back. These new systems cost a lot when they first come out then the prices drop to around $150 dollars. There is always going to be the kid who has to have the latest and the greatest with parents to buy them it to boot. So they are losing money in the beginning but I sure have made it back at this point in time.
Sony is already subjected to pirating. Just wait Bleems emulator will get pirated too. If sony was smart they would work out a lincensing deal with Bleem make money for a system that is going to be obsolete in anonther year, for nothing. Make it a SONY endorsed product and work through these channels and branch out in to a newer market. I might get the software even more if SONY was helping produce it. I don't ever see myself buying another console anyway. I know I am going to catch on fire for this. But they could team up with DIVX and keep there software from getting pirate. YEA RIGHT! The fact remains people don't always have the means for pirating files. Everyone copies music CD's what is the difference. If I can't get the software pirated I am not going to buy it anyway and the company isn't any richer regardless. Open markets just capture more of an audience in the long run. They everyone benifits. Next we are going to have a court battle where SEGA sues SONY for having a monopoly on cons
Here here. I think that is a great idea for a new icon, but it doesn't exactly seem to fit the spirit of slashdot. Does it?
I recently started play quake II about a year ago. I think senseless game violence is great for realing stress. In a mindless sort of way. I don't think I am actually killing anyone. But it allows me to relieve my stresss built up inside subconciously. Making it a heathly outlet IMHO.
You want violence turn on the news. Games and movies creating a hate inside a child is possible, but I think most of it has to do with the real environment they are brought up in. Not the ones posed in music, tv (as entertainment), games and movies.
People need to stop blaming their problems on the rest of the world and start taking control and responsibility for themselves.
Good I am glad I sparked some intertest. I immediatly emailed him my disgust with his use of the term OPEN SOURCE. I even submited some of my own code.
OPEN SOURCE (I think it is XML. Not sure...)
I also gave him some perl code for free.
$HTML_PAGE =~ s/source//g;
Seriously. I need someone that can write up a good letter to send to al gore. It needs to state all the reason why we belive he is wrong in using this and what he should do about it. Then I will take care of the rest. I will put up a website that will alow users to modify it and have it critqued by their peers. Create a true Open Source website.
I propose that we all should collaborate to create a web page that outlines Al Gore's misuse of the concept of open source. Attached would be a prewritten document that explains and states the nature of what he has done. That way people can just click and email it to him (or cut/paste). Joe's Post is a pretty good start to what we need. If we could orgainze a little bit we might have a flood of emails showing up at Al Gore's email boxes. Imagine the nitemare we could create. I will provide webspace. I need some help from everyone else to provide a truly OPEN SOURCE web site that will be used to take down Al Gores mockery of OPEN SOURCE. Email me if you are intrested. Maybe we can get some help from slashdot.
I think there is an inherent fear that comes with mixing technology and our body. Even though the matrix was not exactly related to using DNA as a semi-conductor, it was a movie that showed us a possiable end scenario of man vs. machine. I believe this is what the author of the post meant when he said he fears the future of this.
I personally would be scared of integrated technology with my brain. It gives viruses a whole new meaning. Although the thought of having computing power inside your mind is fascinating, I still think it is way far off from what you and I would consider cool.
Not to go off on a tutorial session. The current directory is ``.'' and it shouldn't be in your path for security reasons and if you are going to put it in your path make it the last directory. This prevents users from sticking a program like ``ls'' in the path before/usr/bin and having it execute code on a non suspecting su - individual. If you want to execute a file in the current directory use ``./''. (ie./cribbage)
Anyway you think using the linux command line is challenging try some of the other shells. ksh, csh, etc.
If you sit down and read the man pages you will find bash is quite wonderful. So many of my friends wondered how I typed so fast. Then I clued them into TAB-completion. What a concept. Anyway I learned linux by exploring it with others. We constantly challenged eacho other and gave each other new ideas. Do we need a LUG in your area? Check it out.
That is the only question in my book. In the article there was mention of users complaining about installing linux. It is so easy now compared to yesteryear that if they can't figure it out by now screw 'em they probably shouldn't be using it anyway (eh hem excuse me).
Why does linux have to be the dominating operating system anyway? I believe that it is doing just fine as is. People who see the inherent usability are rewarded with installing it. And for those who are pushing to make Linux the only operating system. They should ask themselves why they still run win98 or NT? For the longest time I only ran Linux because that is all I needed. Now I have a mixture of both. Since I like to play Quake2 and the 3dfx drivers for Linux suck I am semi forced to use win98. But I don't mind. One more piece of dribble. If we get incompetent users much like those who use win98 who is going to help them recompile there kernel when they want a newly added feature? You?
sniff sniff, here is a tissue. What is sad with your response is the fact that you voiced your stupidity. I would not even consider myself more than a user when it comes to system administration, yet I set up a virtual server for an ISP in less then 16 hours. I bagged sendmail for qmail. Set up was a snap. Don't poop on linux for tools that were created for unix 15-20 years ago.
The essay was very well written, but I thought I would add my comments as well. The Open Source Model for Development is just that a Model. Is used for creating a structured way of developing great and creative code. I wasn't developed it wasn't thought out it was spawned by the believes of the hackers from the golden age of computing.
There is a distinct difference between the econmics of software and how software comes about. It is my understanding the most who enjoy writing software and contribute to open source projects are hobbyists interested in furthering the development of something they like. Therefore money should never be a issue. If you get paid for a hobby you are then doing a job. This begins to change the interests of why you are contributing in the first place. Money is cheap. I get a better feeling giving they receiving so I give more than I get.
One more note is Open Source Models exists everywhere it just so happened the with the up surge of the internet and the development of linux and companies like Red Hat who are able to earn money of the efforts of free software development, we have allowed ourselves to believe people are getting something for nothing. Where as Red Hat has given back to the community. Even started to pay people who worked on open source projects in the interest of keeping them around.
Ham radio operators are a good example of the open source model in action. Many people who design and develope better power supplies becuase they are interested in making them perform outside the bounds of what currently exists. Then they publish there results so people can improve or use as they see fit. Even though they spent time and effort designing the new power supply they would have done it regardless of pay so why not share the wealth of knowledge and not for money.
What are these people waiting around for? If all gateway is going to do is put a x86 type computer together for easy surfing and use amigas name you guys are getting ripped off. I can identify with the underdog and wanting a different solution to MS domination. But at least get with a architecture that is in the marketplace. Besides which amiga lets you play quake II?
