Why do we pay homage to this putz? Would the LinuxExpo bring Gates as a keynote speaker?! Get Ken Williams on here to provide him with some support. It's the least we can do for the guy.

We're talking about a very long-term venture here. Space, once we get rolling, will be our future. So while a "no private ownership" creed might be conforting and viable now, it will not hold up for long.

And what a wonderful way to discourage private industry from going! "You can own chunks of a finite resource down here but don't even think of laying claim to a speck of infinity." What breed of political bullshit is this??

  5. Data Quality on Modem Tax - Urban Legend Come True? · · Score: 1

I hate to say it, but there is a justification for the tax. After all, why should people who aren't using modems, or are using them less, pay for upgrades the phone company makes only for the modem users. It's unfortunate, but modem users should pay their fair share, and if they use the lines more, they should pay for that usage.

Nonsense. The telco is only responsible for a clean voice line - this equates to about 9600bps. If I can't connect at 56k or 28.8, their response is "tough cookies". If they want to multiplex my line, making my max throughput a mere 28.8 (regardless of my modem), then I can't say anything.

A modem user is in NO meaningful way using anything in excess of what a voice user is using. If they get a 53k throughput, it's blind luck - they're not entitled to it. So any argument about paying their "fair share" is utterly bogus on its face.

The telco system is legacy, it was never designed to handle the internet. I don't expect them to install new lines gratis, nor do I expect them to provide me with a 56k connection. That's what ISDN is for - guarantees as to quality and throughput.

I can't think of anything more brilliant to say than ...this is a damned good idea (a well-thought-out Linux challenge).

Microsoft clearly relies on it's FUD not simply to garner support from businesses but the average Joe as well. Unfortunately, Average Joe reads CNN.com and is happy with that. CNN.com takes the carrot like a rented mule. And like another /.er posted, lather, rinse, repeat. So I don't expect that such a coup would really change things, but it'd be nice to have yet another high profile incidence to sic our friends and relatives unto.

I can't decide if I agree with you on the draw aspect tho. Clearly it would be the "sportsman-like" thing for him to do, but I'm not really sure that's his responsibility in this case.

Important to remember that Debian is often considered closest to Linux' roots. Franky, I can't imagine a distro I'd rather see in this position. I think this is absolutely wonderful. Even more for the fact that the retailers will be donating the profits to more of the same.

A /. reader noted that a market leader that acknowledges someone else as a threat ceases to be seen as the market leader. Microsoft did just this in it's Linux Myths page. I'm willing to bet that MS is shooting a blue eggroll out it's collective a** on this one.

    2) The transmission method supposes two filters set to different "angles". If the sateliate is taking these packets in, then they *must* have the filters set to the proper angles as well. Is this not a very loud means of comprimizing this medium?
