I think it's cool that SuSE is doing this, but my main question is, how long until we get DVD burners for home use? I imagine recordable DVD CD's are probably relatively more expensive than CD-R's, but at the same time, one can store several (if not more) CD-R's worth of information on a single DVD.
It's good to see that not everyone in the world is heartless. For example, take this AC. I'm not exactly sure what this is called, but I love seeing people pick apart other's posts and then replying to individual pieces. So, naturally, I find it my duty to do the same...
Asking the moderators to aggressively down-mod this thread just so it palatable to your own sensitive intellect is just a little selfish (not to mention arrogant).
Arrogant? If she were being arrogant, her sentence would have perhaps been "You should moderate these down because I say so."
But cute is not the same thing as funny, and many of the posts here are hilarious.
Hi, you should also note that many of the posts here are incredibly stupid (i.e, the both of ours!)
They were SPAMMERS so 'human' is a debatable term.
Gee, I wasn't aware that "anonymous coward" was now synonymous with God.
It's not as though human life (or spammer life for that matter) is exactly a scarce commodity.
Hello, do you know the definition of the words you are typing? Quoting M-W Dictionary - lookup "Commodity": 1 : an economic good: as a : a product of agriculture or mining. Well now, since when is a human life an economic good?
I think it could go "An Overly Sensitive Thought Police On Slashdot is just a Heartless Uncaring Bastard who hasn't spent all night sorting and cleaning spam out of a mail spool yet.
That's pretty good. Think of it all by yourself?
Some might consider this flamebait (not sure why) but I would just like to inform them that this is sarcasm at it's finest!@#$
This is really pathetic, Every time I read posts a little too late, the pages are/.'d. It's amazing to think what we could do to any box in the world simply by posting a story.
I couldn't agree with you more. I think men and women are both turning away from families especially early in life. They often want to get their career going before thinking about "settling down." Not to mention the fact that less than 50% of marriages last - and kids from broken homes often grow up and create broken homes themselves.
I'm not going to post what I originally wanted to because I'm sure it's been posted a hundred times already, and I'm sure what I'm about to post has been posted a hundred times too.
This could be considered flame bait, but hear me out. I'm not trying to flame Roblimo (although I am not incredibly fond of him), just giving my opinion.
Basically, I don't care to read Roblimo flatter himself about his awesome wife or how he has dated all kinds of "hot chicks" and his opinion of "geek girls." However, I understand that he posted it under Humor, and so I will overlook it and not flame him to bad.
But, I for one, am getting tired of seeing everything posted by Roblimo. I remember the good old days when Rob and Jeff posted just about everything themselves - back then I truly enjoyed/. Now I don't exactly understand where Roblimo came from (I'm assuming when andover took over/. he was added) which I can understand. But, I'm getting tired of some of Roblimo's posts. Normally, if I don't like a poster (i.e: john katz) I just exclude their posts. But with Roblimo, I cannot do this because he posts just about EVERYTHING. I hardly ever see CmdrTaco post anything and Hemos is still posting (thank God) but Roblimo has taken it upon himself to post anything and everything he comes across, whether it be/. worthy or not.
Consider this: What about the possibility of having a page where/.'ers can go see all of the stories that have been submitted but didn't quite make it to the main page (for whatever reason). All to often, what I would like to see on my/. is different from what Roblimo would like me to see. (For example, see the story i'm replying to.)
The actual wired article states "Clearly, he doesn't need vocational skills" and I didn't think of it this way before but does he mean that the kid has no vocational skills and doesn't really need them in his line of work (I can't understand why he wouldn't need them) or does it just mean that he has good vocational skills already. I took it to mean the latter.
As for no one hiring him or doing business with him, you are completely wrong. Someone who can start a profitable business at age 14 with 200+ customers would certainly be a plus.
minors (and ESPECIALLY teens) are mentally too volitale
According to who? You? How do you classify the mentality of someone by calling them minors? age? Can you say that a 17 year old who is turning 18 tomorrow does not have the mentality of an 18 year old that turned 18 today? Surely not.
I feel that Comdex shouldn't have compromised and let him in, but they did and what's done is done.
No matter how malleable the brain turns out to be, it is still governed by its genetic heritage. For new connections to form with ease, the underlying machinery must be in order. And the design of these biochemical cogs is encoded in the genes.
We (our brains) are shaped in two ways: by nature (heritage) and by nurture (our environment). Forming "new connections... with ease" has nothing to do with "underlying machinery" having to be in order (whatever that means). Humans are born with instincts, but anything can be learned whether one has is underlying machinery in order or not.
On a side note, if it is true, that we do continually form new neurons, then why do older people seem to learn much slower and often forget things? Is it even possible to really ever forget something?
I'll be honest, I enjoyed this Q&A session. I like the cDc boys - Can't say I've ever had more fun than sitting in front of my computer on the school's network (back in HS) and ticking everyone off - I especially love opening/closing the cd-rom multiple times. Even better, say you have a game of quake2 going and there are no more spaces for you. In comes bo to save the day!
Anyway, I applaud cDc for doing something creative with their time and being open enough to share it with/.
One bad thing about/. : if you don't get here when a story is posted, then you usually miss out, because 9 times out of 10 whatever possible link there was (his homepage) is/.'d within minutes.
Honestly..I might have thought this e-mail to be possibly truthful until i read this:
> Please forward this mail to Slashdot.
No offense to Rob or the great people and users at slashdot, but Back in that MSNBC chat thing w/ Linus, he said it himself, he had never even been to Slashdot. So why the interest in informing everyone?
And why the AC post? Perhaps.. Alan forgot his password, but honestly how long does it take to get another/. account/pass..a whole 2 minutes? Depending on how bogged down the server is. So maybe that point is arguable.
But I really like this one:
> The Russian KG^H^H company has promised me T1 access to the internet.
T1 access to the internet? Is it just me, or do any of the rest of you feel that Linus would never in a million years make a stupid comment like that. That just sounds plain ridiculous. Why would Linus really care (and if he did care, why would he say that to Alan) if he had a T1 or a ds3 or an oc48 or a 56k modem.
This whole E-mail post sounds like a load of crap to me, and I honestly think it's a joke. Moderate that crap to a -10.
I said she burned herself. What degree burn it was is irrelevant. the point is, she burned herself, yes? Ok..Secondly, what idiot does not pay attention to what they're getting into. This goes for both cases. [1] In the McD's suit, this lady gets a hot cup of coffee and sticks it inbetween her legs. Smart? I don't think so. Asking to get burned? Definately. [2] These kids took *something or someone's* word that this course was just a "point and click" course. Before every course I have ever signed up for, I have find someone else who has taken it and I get the lowdown. I don't take some catalog's word.
My point being (and this was also the point of my original post) this. God gave people brains. Why not use them?
"That's how it is these days. You fail the class, you sue the school," Wright said.
Hah..It works with everything else, why not try it on schools.
Reminds me of when that lady sued McDonalds for burning herself with coffee. Apparently, the cup said "Hot" and she didn't believe it. Maybe if it had originally said "Extremely hot" she would have been a bit more cautious.
Exactly what was the point of flaming him? He had an excellent post and you didn't bother reading it twice maybe?
Do you think he cares about what you think about integration?
Oh, and I like this..."but running around defending it when you have little knowledge of computers in a forum primarily devoted to open-source software is going to do no good whatsoever."
Slashdot is not "a forum primarily devoted to open-source software". It is a forum primarily devoted to discussions. So, why don't you quit being a lamer and take his post for what it was.
There is a reason he got a Score of 2 and you did not.
Personally, I wouldn't attempt a history of Linux Distributions, however, I wouldn't mind seeing one. anyone else?
Will someone *please* get CmdrTaco a Debian 2.1 CD

Pre-Beta Slackware 4.0

Yeah really, CmdrTaco is even putting messages into a Slackware oriented post.
Anyways, I honestly don't see what's so great about Debian..It's nice..I guess - haven't tried 2.1, but 2.0 was half-decent. In any event, I have had more problems with it than I ever had with Slackware. But then again, with Slackware I only installed stuff I wanted. Why waste space on stuff that only frustrates you? (ppp in debian? ugh)
I didn't think Slackware was still around they had fall so far behind and out of date
Exactly what has fallen so far behind and out of date? As far as I know, everything still works on my system, and I started out with Slackware 3.4.
You'd be suprised at how many people still use Slackware. It's the kinda distro where those who start out with it love it, and those who try to switch to it despise it (usually those are the people who attempt to switch from something like redhat which teaches you nothing about how your system works, and then they find themselves to impatient to work with it..usually anyways).
I think it's cool that SuSE is doing this, but my main question is, how long until we get DVD burners for home use? Indeed, and the number will only grow when the government (clinton) supports it.
