  1. Re:Agree with Cook on this one on Users Don't Want iOS To Merge With MacOS, Apple Chief Tim Cook Says (smh.com.au) · · Score: 1

I also agree with Cook. While Win10 may be solid under the hood, the user interface sucks. Like being designed by a three year old. Above all an awful waste of space. The Ok button does not need to be that large on my desktop. For using touch I can understand that, but not for a pc with a mouse. That's also why the borders of a window are now 1 pixel thick. Try that for resizing a window. I estimate a 30% less time efficiency using an application while (trying to) resizing windows. Again on a tablet, windows don't need to be resized. So merging the two systems into 1 only makes sense when the OS can determine the hardware it runs on and give you the right UI. I think it's time we - as users - should unite ourselves and make these companies understand that we are fed up with these forced changes and that we want to have a real say in how we want our system to be.

  2. Not so intelligent on Why AI Won't Take Over The Earth (ssrn.com) · · Score: 1

Ryan Calo does not strike me as intelligent ! For AI - Artificial Intelligence, means the robot will do things that are not programmed into the system. What it may actually do is by means of deduction, act. And like Isaac Asimov so to the point wrote in his novels: A robot may have the law programmed into him 'not to harm a human being',yet it may - by means of deduction - descide to save 100 people and let 3 die, because the boat can only hold 100 people. And what about malware taking over the robot ? And what about OS bugs ? Like to simulate the side effects of that.

  3. Pascal or Modula-2 on Ask Slashdot: How To Get Started With Programming? [2017 Edition] · · Score: 1

To my opinion, start with Pascal or Modula-2. Two languages well structured, that will force you in learning certain important basics like initialisation. Once you're proficient in one of these languages, a more loose language like C will not trouble you if you keep using the structured way you learned with Pascal. At least that's what I did. Once you get some experience you might try C++ or Java.

No, their computers upgraded to win10 overnight. So none of their custom software worked anymore.... :-)

  5. Been there too on Ask Slashdot: What's The Best CMS? · · Score: 1

Two years ago I was in the same situation. I looked into Joomla, Drupal, Typo3 and Magento. They all seemed so complicated. So I started to create my own php framework (had database knowledge enough to do so). Later on I had( the opportunity) to learn Joomla for a project and realised that these systems are complicated for a reason. Reasons I saw now that I developed a very small cms myself. To my experience Joomla is well supported in terms of community and plugins and reasonable simple to adapt to your likes. Magento that's a different case. Drupal, I have no hands on knowledge but I do know that it is not supported on all hosting providers. That it is a bit heavier on the server. So I should go for Joomla.

  6. Ever thought about this ? on This Satellite Could Be Beaming Solar Power Down From Space By 2025 · · Score: 1

Anyone ever thought about a solar tower plant ? With mirrors reflecting the sun towards a tower where natrium or some other substance is heated up to hundreds of degrees celcius and then drives a turbine to generate electricity. Clean power, the ideal industry for counties like Spain, Greece or Mexico to become an energy supplier for surrounding countries.
