Atmospheric Drum and Bass is where its at imho, check out anything and everything LTJ Bukem has put out. His label (Good Looking Records) just got an online store back up, they have about 90 items, various vinyls and cds. Check it out. I highly recommend the Progression Sessions for the mixed drum-and-bass, and the Earth series for a more organic approach.
As someone who has worked for a few small businesses, I've been able to witness the effects of starting up first hand and I've noticed it is quite hard. As someone who is the CTO of an organization that operates in its own country I'm wondering what kind of steps people must take to become a country. Yes I know you need some other country to acknowledge your legal existance but what about simple things like getting snail mail delivered or having your own olympic team or entering the World Cup. What if you wanted to join the United Nations. How do you adopt your own currency, how do you get listed in my Almanac. Everyone has always dreamed of being able to wisk away to their own private island without any laws but what about the little benefits of having your own country such as those. How do you make them happen, what does it cost? Who runs it?
Very interesting way to look at it. One could argue that the typical AOL user is too naive to understand other mail programs and what not. Also you could say this seriously inhibits their ability to quickly and painlessly switch ISPs. The only argument I was trying to attack in my previous post was that of legality. By giving users an option AOL can not be responsible. If you click yes you click yes. It is that simple. I do agree however, that there should be a "What Does This Mean" option in addition to the YES/NO that is currently given. I think its a little brutal to say they are taking advantage of their users naivete', perhaps a better way to look at it is that they are trying to make life easier by putting everything in one easy to use application. Finally, "America Online" is an option in the Add/Remove Programs area of the Windows control panels so you can get rid of the application and most browsers upon installation ask you if you want to make them the default browsers. Reversing the process is possible.
This is a very interesting article, I also think its nice, and probably more effective, that it comes from a valid news source. The one thing that slashdot and the poster of this article failed to mention that the "takeover" of the machine is an option. I installed AOL 5.0 on a machine a week ago to help someone upgrade from the earlier 4.0 version. Upon finishing the installation it asks if you would like to use AOL 5.0 for all email, news, www, ftp etc. This is not a hostile machine takeover; the end user has the option. This machine still happily runs IE5 (which I am currently using to type this comment right now), mIRC, Netscape Mail and anything else I want it to. Although it is an interesting point, I think it is important to give the whole story.
Having been on both sides of this, the clueless and the techie, I think that strips like this are perfectly fine. It seems like as time rolls on we are more concerned with being as proper as we can be and stopped having fun. Nobody seemed to complain at the BOFH series, and I know a lot of Operaters who aren't ashamed to admit they fit that definition at times. We were all newbies at one point, nothing is wrong with stepping back, laughing at ourselves and seeing how far we have come.
I know that companies spend much more than that per year on multiple campaigns but doesn't blowing it all in one shot on such a lame concept seem a bit odd? Personally I'd prefer to see a much more creative Super Bowl commercial.
As far as the betterment of society, I think donating money to a worthy cause, for example victims of the recent earthquakes, and those who were ran out of house and home due to the hurricaine and other natural disasters are in need of some help more than people who can't decide which brand of pizza they like the best.
Umm, last time I checked, I couldn't read the site of rockets in orbit. Perhaps my eyesight has just gotten really poor because I use the computer too much. If you ask me this is the biggest waste of money I have heard of in a long long long time. I am reminded of a great lyric... "Strictly Commercial" (Frank Zappa). If you have that much money it's disgusting in my opinion that you waste it on an ad that nobody can see, why not use it for the betterment of society. Oh well, it could be worse. (scary thought eh?)
Exactly, I remember four or five years ago when POGs really exploded, the exact same happened. Parents began going nuts because it seemed that POGs encouraged gambling, and some schools even barred POG playing at school. If I remember correctly no substantial decision came as a result of this suit so I expect this [Pokemon suit] to be here today, gone tomorrow and everyone will just go back to playing the games and watching the shows. Perhaps the best is that this isn't on local news. Finally!!! Something stupid that didn't make the news!
