Ok, how many people wager that idiots will put their card in a floppy or zip drive when trying to use it?
On a more serious note, those that are aware that it is possible to copy the contents of this chip (and/or the entire card) might not feel as safe as the uninformed. So it might be a bigger success than the pesimistic existing slashdot'ers may think.
As I said before, developing for one toolkit just causes others to be left out. I don't have the kde libs, so I can't run kde apps (yet, 'till I install them). So to get java working, I have to install something I dont' want?
autoconf? so you have to develop for glibc 2.x,1.x, gtk, qt, motif/lesstif,xforms?
Do you think that if they concentrate on one distrib, that they will get most of the linux groupies? If anything, I'd wager you'd get no more than 40% of the linux users using java and the rest.. screwed, unless you know how to configure it just right. That's whats great about developing it for Solaris, FreeBSD or NT, there is no confusion if you are using libc6 or glibc2.x or whatever.
First of all, let me be happy to say there seems to be less of a "First Post" fiesta anymore.
Now back to our original programming.
If Sun makes the fastest java, this will definitely give MS a run for its money (Microsoft, not the condition). Especially that Sun is temporarily not able to do anything about MS's developing their own style, this could put MS out of our misery.
And with this speedup of Java and of CPU's, I wouldn't be surprised if we got better java wordprocessors by next year.
To my understanding, this isn't limited to Laptops. Its due to any plug and play device, which include PCMCIA deviced...
Setting those up that type of hardware under a PC Unix requires some type of support on behalf of the hardware supporting that the unix already supports, such as the ESS being soundblaster compatable..
I'm quite sure a letter to their editors would get some sort of follow up on such garbage written. But then again, the state of journalism isn't in good shape anymore. Look at how the press has everyone hyped up about Y2k and what is affected. I think banks should be less worried than say, the IRS or other LARGE institutions.
I have never had my intelligence insulted like this before.
Let's get to the facts.. or what they call it.
Remember Java? That was the radical new technology of four years ago, an upstart product that threatened to smash Windows once and for all.
Let's mumble all to ourselves in the holey chant that we know so well. Windows(NT|9[58]|3.[0-1]) is an OS. Java is a language. Java was to eliminate the problems of cross-platform development. This is what C and C++ almost did.
No big deal, says Sun's vice president of software marketing, George Paolini. '' It hasn't happened because it hasn't needed to happen,'' he says. ''There's no reason to rewrite an entire office suite in Java.''
In MY eyes, java is where perl was a little while back. Its at that point whre people are writting and using it. People aren't writting OS's and the sort in it. Perl has its limitations and that's why its going its direction. Java will go another. Give it time. More people are using it. Just because its not written in java doesn't mean that java is bad. Just like I'm writting in English doesn't make Latin bad. (or does it...)
But Troan says Linux has already avoided one of Java's biggest mistakes. The first releases of Java were crude and buggy. ''People set it up as though the first release of immature technology was going to go out and take over the world,'' Troan says. Linux, on the other hand, came to public attention after years of buffing and bug-fixing. Linux was running successfully on thousands o f computers long before the media hype began.
Has anyone ever had a kernel panic under Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD and whatnot? If you have, you can easily raise your clue-bats and find this guy. Most any software is buggy even in its first month. Hell, I wrote a piece of code that reorders and groups things, and I had a major bug in it. I'll admit it. I'm not like MS. I don't write perfect code first try!
I've lost all faith in the author and the news paper for running that article. It isn't a bad shot at Linux.. it's a person trying to gain his fame with bad journalism.

More importantly, people will simply choose. Just like there are different methods of video and audio distributions, people choose the most convenient.
If you have the money to shell out for a new CPU, perhaps 2, a new motherboard isn't THAT expensive. It isn't that expensive relative to the price of the CPU, so if for some odd reason you are upgrading from a PIII to a new AMD, I'm quite sure the price difference won't matter all that much for the performance gains AND the ability to choose. I know, this will be a pain in the ass to simply switch two different CPU's, but usually people will stick with a company's CPU out of preference or out of ambivalance.
Another plus of the new architecture? Each CPU maker will use the technology they know how to use best. I wouldn't expect it any other way. I wouldn't force an artist who uses oil paints to move over to anything else if that is what he knows best.
If this catches on this can drop alpha prices if this baby sells. This is also the perfect oppertunity for Compaq/Dec to piggy back on this liunx craze. I'm not a linux fan mayself, but I do like the effect that its causing: an openning of many people's eyes that there IS an alternative to MS. An alternative that costs not a penny extra to put into effect.
If these do get very popular.. also expect prices to drop in Alpha prices...
Think of it. Everyone MUST be registered, but they get to choose if they remain anonymous to the public? ('sporty' would be replaced by anonymous coward to the public)
To agree and combind a few of your statements, MS is not as open as the alternatives. To get into development, I heard that it cost money to get into development. I remember when I had a hard time with linux a while back, before I knew what modules were, I modified the source to use IRQ 5 for com4. And it worked. I self-released to my-self a custom linux kernel to suit my needs. Getting into MS devel is a bit more involved (as you well point out).
I have a feeling that we might as well just use pens and pencils. Let them HERF that advanced technology.
On a more serious note, those that are aware that it is possible to copy the contents of this chip (and/or the entire card) might not feel as safe as the uninformed. So it might be a bigger success than the pesimistic existing slashdot'ers may think.
It's probably a matter over whos is more powerful... you know, like those cheezy TV shows where there is this small struggle until one gives way.
As I said before, developing for one toolkit just causes others to be left out. I don't have the kde libs, so I can't run kde apps (yet, 'till I install them). So to get java working, I have to install something I dont' want?

I thought that this was to prevent others from modifications to the language or worse, theft of code.

Um, opensourcing things like say, the jre or certain parts is probably what they meant when they said "close to opensource"
You are absolutely right, but then I am guessing that within 3 deviations that this is true.

email it to the user? you know.. it's a password.. i have to remember my atm pin, my ss card number and ten other accts.. i think one more won't hurt.

This is really nice. It should get bumped up to informative/interesting..
