Well... if you know what you are doing, I mean really know, you can actually get it working. Thats if you know the quirks and what not. How well it performs... I do not know. It's like sendmail.cf. If you wanna do anything, you have to know the language. Well.. lets forget that M4 is around;>
Um.. so what? I can install FreeBSD in about 5, Debian about 2... nt in about 10.. and if you say multiple installs at the same time, all of these can be net installed which is almost just as fast on a speedy network. OS/2..well.. os/2 always took me a good while;>
And for configuring software? Sendmai lusually comes presetup to a degree. Do I need to add a feature? Use m4 to recompile the cf file
Think about it. The USPS can charge in any way they want because you are using them as the service. Well...
If you use UPS, you don't pay the governement afaik... i don't know about taxes on it. But I don't remember the gov't marching up to those brown uniformed bastards doing their cartman impression to get money from them, as they yell "You will respect my authoritay!" If you want to use the USPS, is it any wonder how they get money from you?
The governemtn doesn't have a stranglehold on the internet. To a degree, a grip. If I email say, from one machine to the next, I can go over any means of transport (tcp/ip, netbios [don't ask]) with any format (email,IM, icq) over a virtual distance: it my bounce around the world using email routing before it gets there, or just one hop (one link between a server and the next).
Now let's ask this question again. How will the government even invision doing this? If you can't even take out most of the variables that make it impossible, why believe it can be made possible much less believe who is telling you this?
Its kinda funny. Its not really evil (imho). I find that it has people just like the techno (whatever its called) community. There are the zealots, the conservatives, the newbies and the momos, the good guys, the intelligent and the misled. Guess its experience based =)
A) I dont think the penguins endured any severe hardships. As someone already pointed out, these are trained penguins who apparently do this sort of crap fairly often.
Depends on where your view holds. This is comparable on some level to the experiments with eltroshock response where animals were shocked to produce a responce in psychology lab experminents.
If the shock (or 'stress') is light, the animal will adapt. If it is not light, the animal will fear it and litterally suffer. I wasn't at lunix world conference, so I can't say. Moral: if it was an ignorable condition, the people running about and talking, is it acceptable if the penguins can 'take it'?
B) I also dont think they belonged at the conference to begin with..
Hey, if they handed out free t-shirts or did tricks, why not? But hey, to each their own (opinion).
As I was taught.. the time between creation and Christ's birth.. the dates between that were never recorded well.. so it can be fesable. But then again, I'm just a Catholic boy. (For those of you interpreting that teaching evolution means when the earth was 'born'.) ---- It's a hard knock life.. for me.
"I can understand that too many keys can look intimidating, but so do the parts inside of a car and your washing machine. Think of it, the "Because novices are flocking to computers in droves to get on the Web, there is going to be more pressure to make computers as easy to use as possible," said Horn, who uses a Dvorak keyboard."
Keyboards are not that intimidating. Washing machines are more intimidating. Heck, the way we use them is the same as we do keyboards. We read a manual, or learn from someone else. You do this, you push that and you get what you want. No one ever said, put a basketball in the washer and you'll get some ill effect. Same with a keyboard. Last time you hit scroll lock or pause (on a computer that doesn't 'use them').
People, if they are opperant, meaning they try stuff out and see if they get positive or negative results, will find that nothing happens when you use them. If they were so curious as to press keys, why not press the F12 key?
If they are people who need to be trained, they won't touch it unless instructed to. And if they do become operant to that effect, they'll hit it... and they may eek in joy to find out their computer didn't blow up.
Moral of the story? Should they try to refine the washer to have to not have that idiotic permanent press setting since few people use it? C'mmon.. we are getting too picky now a days...
"People are comfortable with the current style of keyboard. Even if they are not good typists, they understand how the keyboard works, and can get by with hunt-and-peck strategies."
So must we confuse people who need or are used to these keyboards with new ones? Sounds like he's refuting his own areguement, but sounds like he's recognizing a non-existant problem.
But they take a great deal more training, and are a lot less intuitive.
Um, pause, break, escape, scroll lock and break do their functions in a lot of the programs I use.. and if I press them to test them and they don't work, i've spent 5 extra seconds. sorry.. ranting. i'll stop now =)
I'm too sexy for this post.... so sexy it hurts...

Will the heat generated cause degredation in the platter's ability to hold data? Will this also mean that drives will use less energy? Great for ploptops, eh? And since the platters could be lighter, does this mean faster rotation? I wish this article was a bit more complete...
Er, SGI (or is it sgi) has a lot to offer anyone who asks for it. So does IBM, Corel and most other companies. I would say MS wouldn't have much to offer linux if they were to endorse it since they have a knack of shooting themseleves in the foot. Well.. IBM shouldn't contribute any propoganda as well.. we know how terrible it is at that.
I can't believe some of the shit people release in the name of opensource - it's embarassing.
If you think you can do better, take the software, rewrite it, release it. If its GNU or BSD style licensing, you shouldn't have a problem distributing. And a lot of software on freshmeat works on freebsd since it does linux apps or can compile them since they are too written for fBSD. Besides, we have/usr/ports. So now that you've made a fool of yourself...
Linux has gotten a lot more popular and attracted a lot of clueless people.
I'm sorry but one doesn't CAUSE the other. They go hand in hand. That's like saying people can run because they can crawl. Most likely because they can crawl, they can run =P
It used to be people wanted to work with an OS that was cool... Now they just want others to think they're cool for working with that OS. Go FreeBSD!
Um, nice generalization there buddy. Now that you've embarassed the rest of the FreeBSD comunnity....
i'm in ny, ny.. and we have none of these things. that's the advantage of being in Cali.. its silicon valley over there.. while over here in ny.. it's just silicon alley.
There are at least two factors that go into this. The work-aholism in america. Work work work.. that's what people are for. Then there is a high correlation of people who are geeks and enjoy it. I love what I do.. sysadmining or programming, and I used to do late hours. Some enjoy programming, others designing.. and they will stay on the computer for hours doing it.
Me? I took out the work-aholism and I've sorta gotten myself to do "normal" hours. Thus I do have a normal relationship with my gf. She only hates it when I am late getting to places;>
Don't you love it how people love to classify things? You realize it's all political BS. Do you realize that the population keeps growing, the age people start using computers is getting younger and the percentage of population on the net, no less on a computer is going up? ZDNet, MetaGuy(tm) and Post-Fud are just big icons for little things.
With all the noise of alternative OS's showing more than their heads and showing their power, it can be expected. The differences between 98 and 95 is only glamor. Free *nix is great. It allows the user ('administrator') to do a lot and have more fun with the OS than some games. Anyone remember Commander Keen?
So great, linux usage inched up from x% to (x+y)% where y is not as great as x, but is significant. So where does that leave us? It leaves us with GAP and Old Navy clothing. It leaves us Saturn and Ford. No longer is the best looking OS Windows, now its *nix. (Linux more than *bsd; aren't these asterics wonderful?) No one to promote the sedan or bell bottoms! We want a new look, something "better" and that's what *nix is doing now with all of its improvements! So now ZDNet, just like the GAP, changed its style to attract people. It s all a popularity contest. Big surprise, no one likes the outsider.
Unfortunately, some people can't stand the thought of male piercing or interracial relationships. That's what this MetaGuy (I swear I can't get his name to mind) is. He stands for the old way of doing things on a computer. He stands for the people who won't change thier ways.
What's post-fud? It's like the post-gay-bashing period. Some goof had to put a label on the fact that people aren't listening to the days of old. Its not like the post-war era's, or the new FreeBSD 3.3 kernel. It's a statistic being reworded. Its another way of saying people are using NT less. It s another way of saying MS isn't doing as great as it could without another OS threat. Its saying we are out of recession. We've heard it before. I bet you a nickel that we hear more about post-fud, anti-ms, civil suit news. We've gone through InfoWorld, ZDNet.. I wonder if the Enquirer will do something next.
I hope Slashdot doesn't post a pro-anti-fud link next time;> maybe anti-anti-pro-anti-fud will now appear.
