  1. Re:The point of MP3 is MUSIC on Alternative view of MP3s · · Score: 1

just as a note to this posting, i agree about 80% to it. There is a big poorly drawn fuzzy line where quality and accessability are seperated. Problem is where people fall and this is why areguments between the qualities arise.

90% of my mp3's sound poor to me because of warvling, distortion and the such. As time passes, I am buying the CD's for them. Maybe I'm one of those that fall on the border of what sounds shouldnt' be thrown out for 'acceptable' quality.

I would think that be a bad way to show your boss what you should be doing. If you want to convince him/her, setup a demo. Setup various httpd's (apache, roxen, fhttpd, iis) on various os's, write up a report and submit it. Not only will you show some competance on what's right and wrong, you'll help the company make a better decission.

If you don't have 20 machines to test this on, test it on one. It takes a day to install an OS and an httpd to confiugre it with some rudamentary tests such as cgi/serverside-language on just one. A database is just as easy to setup. Spam it to hell and see what numbers you get.

The week of testing is surely worth the year or two minimum of usage.

I think a good conclusion is if it works, regardless of its operating system (NT and various BSD's), regardless of the distribution (for you Linux guys), regardless of the software used, if it's working fine, without a hitch, don't break it.

Now now, I didn't say which OS's and which softwares work best. But to each his own.

As for law, I find it funny that any abuse of system causes people to look for a specific person, but in the case of this posting, the service is liable? Something sounds a bit backwards about this. Until there are percise laws about this, it is all open to interpretation by those judging.

Demon is trying to take action by having the 'bad guys' sign statements that they will not act as such again. Until there are more percise laws written up about this type of thing, it can go either way. Not guilty because Demon tried or guilty because Demon didn't want to take off the 'bad post'.

Notice that the offended don't go directly after them, if not including Demon.

You are absolutely right. I remember a while back the port 43 trojan'ed tcpwrappers. If that was not a trojan, i don't know what is. It was uploaded to the official site that distributes it, no?

Because it is 'opensource', it is only easier to find the problem in the source and see how it works since we have source. Other than that, Windows compiled code is just gobldygook.

One could argue that it's the responsibility of the host. If it provides the service, shouldn't it manage it? Parent's are responsible for their child's actions until a certain age.

On the other hand, can it be considered abuse of a system such as a prank call using the phone companies lines? In that case, it is like a teen who is tried as an adult. The authority owning the service is bypassed and is tried directly.

I would hope that it goes case by case in terms of how often the host lets it pass without some sort of delegation. To each his own...

Linux IMHO is a great desktop OS. It's the '95 of Unicies without the crashing. It has a lot of software and hardware support. Nice for some development, but then again, nice for development of Linux applications.

For a server, I would give FreeBSD (just like yahoo does) a try. Nice threading, nice SMP, nice performance. Easy security to setup (as most of it is pre-setup) and not ridden with scritps like the Linux distro's.
