i was looking at their product list and couldn't help thinking about an arthur c clarke book i read eons ago where the networked house still functioned (albiet what was still left) after a nuclear war.
it's all fiction of course (emp, power etc) but the food processor would fire up breakfast every morning, dispose of the remains and happily fulfil the daily requirements of the now charred occupants.
If BeOS were a woman, it would beelle. If Linux were a woman, it would be weird science. If Windows were a woman, it would be as good looking as a blow-up bill doll
Now adays you see a lot more iMacs and AMD-based lower priced, yet still name brand, PCs being sold in large retail computer chains.
i hope amd do well with K7's because the problem is intel is the only one making money. even though amd are selling the chips they are missing out on the higher prices that intel enjoy (read mega profits) that they can churn back into R&D, marketing and distribution.
, I think AMD should be proud that people lose sight of the fact that they are so small compared to Intel, and don't have nearly the level of resources to put on major marketing campaigns
also capacity to produce. this is a major factor. I was reading just yesterday that amd are going for the break in intels chip release schedule (xeon pIII delays) and charging at a premium instead of having to discount them. If amd can sort out their production, the money will follow good product.
yeah I agree, but it also shows a technological generation gap b/w the commentator and the current L-users.
He maybe one smart cookie but I cant help thinking that he's missing the point about open source software - it's free, high quality, there are fast updates, available on many platforms and being developed around the clock etc, etc.
It reminds me of the mainframers/mini computer users knocking the pc and all those eminantly qualified persons who missed the internet, when any student at college could see it's potential.

What Linux needs is more developers. It has a never-ending thirst for them. The more you get, the more gems you get, the more likely the tough, killer apps, drivers, and infrastructure are developed.
well i think the third-party tools developers are also hoping for this as well. not long after the Linux is Not Red Hat (red-hat/codewarrior) article, i got an email from mark of metroworks customer service asking a few questions and agreed to a comment i made about the 'new breed' of application developers that will eventually flood linux.
... linux distributions such as 'rh', suse and caldera (and i single these distro's out because they are targeting the business market..) gain more market share the developers will more likely be 'application-developers' rather than the traditional hard core system hackers typified by the comment, 'true coders used Debian and Slackware'....
it was good to read another ddt rant (informative and easy to read with a bit of a chuckle)..things got pretty boring on finger.planetquake after he left.

The K virtual machine will be made available on the web through the Sun Community Source Licensing process and from the Sun sales force. For more information on Sun Community Source Licensing, see http://www.sun.com/software/communitysource/

58% The Spotless System
Summary: Welcome to the Spotless System Page. The Spotless system is an experimental Java[TM]* system for the Palm Connected Organizer. It includes a JVM that supports the complete bytecode set and dynamic class loading, and class libraries and demo applications. It is the result of a Sun Microsystems Laboratories research project exploring the construction of small JVMs. It is not a supported product.
so they certainly link the 'kJava' to spotless! but this may not be the final release version.
On April 28th 1999, the UK Government announced that Windows NT 4.0 has been successfully evaluated at the E3/F-C2 level. This evaluation, which is roughly equivalent to a C2 evaluation according to the US "Orange Book", confirms what millions of customers already know--that Windows NT Server provides the security needed by banking, health care, military and other customers, as well as the flexibility and ease of use demanded by small business and home users. news does travel slow on slashdot these days. I remember submiting this article from palmstation.com a couple of months ago... and the link to the spotless system - experimental Java[TM]* system for the Palm Connected Organizer...no doubt the fore-runner sun r&d project to the public news release.

Id software for one (well almost). While they where evaluating using java for QII (long time ago now) JC was talking to transvirtual about using Kaffe...but it never happened, for technical (coding in java at that time) reasons.

cool ron, in the linux community actions speak louder than words. i know u can run 'cw' on other linux distro's but dont support them. how about putting up publically on yr website how you do this listing the changes needed to be made....a sort of an faq on working with other distributions, investigate LSB etc... this sort of help will give yr company more cred. (and sales) than any bucket load of cash.
the platform and development can be greatly improved with tools such as 'mw'.
can u give 'us an url to go peek at the win32 perl version yr using. i remember having a look at it many moons ago and i wasn't impressed. guess i'll have to goto perl.org.....
yeah i cant understand why 'tcl/tk' combo, isn't used more (ah mention the name 'sun' anyone?). If anyones interested, go to the scriptics.com site and take a gander.
m$windows has always lacked a standard scripting language, unless you count vbscript, vba and visual basic. dont fancy learning 'm$-perl' though.
Microsoft also paid Inprise $100 million for the rights to use Inprise-patented technology in Microsoft products
yep now you have 'm$' with it's foot in the door for cross platform tools (read linux). guess those intellectual-assets will be sucked dry by 'm$' and 'm$-borgified' (read re-engineered and stuffed up).
borland was a good alternative once and they still make nice tools but..there goes the hood!
well after a bit of a search on the site i failed to find any references to yr question. I distinctly remember this being discussed on the 'magic project' page saying the cost would be > expensive than the windows port. Someone if they can proove me wrong. the turn around time in emailing support/sales will be too long.
Opera do themselves a bit of a disservice here because the balence between developing a browser, keeping it complient to standards and release time is difficult. Is the oss community up to it?
Nothing is really 'free'. It is merely subsidized by other products. It is done in the interest of market share and domination, but not necessarily in the interest of the user.
Will my windows license be transferrable? the simple answer (caveat: last time someone asked this question and i looked) - is no.
but i may be wrong....i will check this out soon. the main reason i used opera is standards. opera has worked hard to comply with w3's standards. plus having mdi allowed me to have multiple sites open w/o having multiple browsers....

the fact that they put out C++ hasn't killed the compiler market, has it?
though the number of competitive commercial 'c' compilers on the windows platform hasn't exactly florished.
