It is NOT the french government suing. It is a civil class action. Of course they won't get their money back. But if they do formally win the lawsuit it will be a BIG incentive for companies to use encryption AND it will make it hardly possible for the government to pass laws restricting the use of encryption.
Just think of it. Which MPs can vote for a law that prevents companies to protect themselves against USUK spies? Specially if they have a court ruling that they indeed have been spied on, and that they could not get their money back despites the ruling.
well I do not think the french govt will have to hire lawyers. There are already more than a bunch of lawyers working for the state and they get ^aid whatever happens, so they might as well work!!

good things about Paris: -cheap bandwidth for an european city -you do not need a car -lots of geek jobs -speaking french -real food -the weather is hardly ever really bad -any street have more nice buildings than the whole Pittsburg -best night scene worldwide -free schools -no crime compared to US
bad things about Paris: -net access is miserable compared to US -you can not afford a car -high rents -high taxes
How can these people pretend they are professional? The root for sequential is 'quent' the verb 'to follow' in latin is sequor, sequiris, sequitur, sequimur, sequimini, sequntur. I'd say the root is 'seq'. sequent means 'following'. but loquent means 'speakking'.
to speak is 'loquor'. so 'quent' might as well be the root for loquent. and aquent might as well mean 'not speaking'..
According to the constitution of the United States the purpose of the Union is:
in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,
I'd call thet serving the good of the nation. But if you do not agree with the constitution of the united states you can emigrate maybe.
You say this campaign 'will hinge on money'. I live in a country where it is illegal for a candidate to receive money from a corporation, since it makes the debate unfair.(France)
Are you saying the government of the united states is not democratically elected? If so what do you plan to do about it? Should the other countries help you gain your freedom like you are helping Irak?
I am surprised by the general tone of the posts talking about the government and the politicians as if they were coming from outer space to rule you. This is YOUR Government. You voted for them to be the ones taking decisions for the good of your nation. (IANAL, so these are just vague informal opinions, not legal arguments) Now this government is attacking Microsoft Corporation, because they think their behaviour is nocive for the good of the nation, because they are breaking a law that has been voted a century ago. It is the judicial system's role to decide whether the government's claim is correct. I do not see why the VP is not supposed to give his opinion on that matter. Didn't you elect him to work for the good of the nation? You will tell me he only does that as part of his fight for the next election. Maybe. But unless the people of the United States is stupid this should not work. You will tell me , even worse, that he does that to get corporate $$ for his campaign. But again, unless the people of the United States is stupid why should they vote for the richest candidate?.
OK..Now I will stop being naive. These fears may be justified. But commenting on the election as if it was a football game is not going to change anything. either you believe your country is a democracy and you enter the political debate, or you think it is a tyranny and then you should start thinking about guerilla tactics. It is YOUR freedom...remember.
I have a hard time following this argument. The society is YOU. If the 50% americans who share your opinion got their shit together and did vote the election scores would be: Dem:25% Rep:25% Others:50%
By not voting and restricting your political action to this kind of whining about corrupted government you support this situation. Not voting is like giving half a vote to the GOP and half a vote to the Democrats.
As far as I understand the case 19 states and the federal administration are suing Microsoft corporation. The VP, as one of the highest executive, as no say as to what the judges should decide BUT as vice president he is involved in this lawsuit. The french administration is thinking about suing Microsoft for similar reasons. I do not expect our prime minister to exert pressure on the judges but as head of the executive branch I do expect him to follow the trial, since it is the french goverment against Microsoft and he IS teh french government. Just my.02 euros
Sales Tax is not the only way governments can get funded, and they are not the best by far. Tax Sales are unfair cause they are not progressive.
Now on an 'ecological' point of view. Tax sales is an incentive for rich people to invest their money in finance instead of buying taxed goods. Income tax on the other side favors people with low income as they get more cash after tax than people with higher revenue for the same work provided ---
The only hint of a potential for LinuxOne seems to be their connections in asia. There is a market that the big american companies can not really enter easily, having neither the business connections nor the skilled workforce. Suse in Germany and Mandrake in France could prosper because they provided a good localization and had the business connection. The UK software market is very much integrated with the american market, I do not see how an investor would invest in a company to make a product that they could just import from the US.
This is not to imply that the british can not produce good software...it just happens that you are too close to america businesswise to get your independance
On a sidenote i am quite surprise that you do not seem to include the UK in europe
I have been thinking about that too, and i think one natural way to do that would be to have the teaching institution manage that. Instead of trying to find toy assignments for C/C++ students, having them all work on a mega STL would seem less pointless. Maybe the french open source senators (tm) could get funding to hire some gurus to lead the project too Laurent ---

This gop.gov is just one more demonstration of how democratic the US of A are. Any C++ programmer can learn java in about two weeks just by browsing sun's website, and they will always have more programming experience than you, which will make the difference. As many have said what you need is to understand the underlying concept. Algorithm. Data structures. Compiler Design. Now if you want to be ahead of the race there are things that are difficult to learn AND useful. Data mining will eventually be needed to make use of all the data collected online. And data mining is statistics, which you can NOT learn in two weeks. Take statistics. Distributed architectures are starting to florish, and they will be THE way to go when/if the semiconductor industry reaches physical limits. There is no good paradigm yet for distributed/parallel programming. But it will not be easy. Learn Petri nets, linear logic, programming semantics, protocol verification.
