If you are going to contract with a sip provider then why have this project? If you really want to do computer to computer communications why not use Jabber? It is already an open standard and has been adopted by both Google and Facebook. There are a large number of Jabber servers that are open to the public as well.
His suggestion about the police and SWAT are way off. A lot of SWAT calls are not "criminals" They are people that snap. Also a lot of crime is caused by people getting drunk and stupid. Sure you may push the drug dealers to right outside of town so people will just go outside of town to make their buys. Same as to day when they go to the "bad" section of town. So you will cut down on breaking and entering and car theft but that is about it. I just do not have a lot of faith technological solutions to social problems. Now if you want to test the tech involved might I suggest using an aircraft carrier? They have the population of a good sized town and do not have tones of visitors. Instead of chipping the crew chip their id tags. You could do the same thing with other military bases as well. Like most things I doubt that it would be as good or as bad as people think.
Who will pay for the pots interface? Will they create a billing system so people can add a POTS interface to their system and make some cash? That is the issue. It takes money to interface to POTS. That is why Skype charges for it.
This is supposed to be a peer to peer system. Which makes me wonder how will it interface with POTS or will it just be an internet only system. In which case why not just use voice chat over any number of jabber clients? Of course you are correct in one really important way. It would be dumb to not develop a plug in for Asterisk for this. You can buy a Skype gateway for Asterisk now.

If you are on Windows Vista or seven you probably should try it. If you work on websites you should use it for testing just like you use Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera... You do test with all the available browsers don't you?
I still use mainly chrome and Firefox but I sure as shooting have tried out IE9. It wasn't bad at all just not better than Chrome for my day to day use. That and it doesn't work on XP which I still use as along with Linux, W7, and OS/X

I have to agree. I signed up for "Unlimited" internet. The only cap should be MAX bandwidthX24x7 use. It doesn't matter both parties are so in far in the back pockets of the telecoms and "Entertainment" that we will be screwed.
