Funny but VNC works great for me. One solution for that would be to include a remote desktop client into Wayland from the start. That could give you the same functionality of redirecting X. And lets be honest X redirect X also has it's limitations. For instance it doesn't redirect sound or give you the option for easy file transfers. Yes their are ways to do it but they are not simple for the average end user. BTW I am the type of guy the always loads joe on his linux boxes because it is a light fast editor that works well over ssh! But I also realize that I am becoming a member of shrinking minority.
The enterprise server market doesn't play to Apples strengths. They really do not care about ease of use they care about reliability and security. Customer support is also very different. They do not want hand holding. In the enterprise you should be dealing with an expert users. They probably have already told you what the problem is and you need to have a replacement part their in a few hours! In the consumer market the answer, " just take in to your local apple store and they will take care of it" is a great answer. The Xserve lacked redundant power supplies which of a lot of people is just a deal killer.
I think part of the problem was that if you used XServe you where destined to end up with a mixed environment. It really was very un apple like. Need a SAN? Not really a good Apple Solution for that. Need a lot of small 1U servers for front ends? Need a 4U 4S box for a database server? In a way I am shocked that Apple is letting this one go. Maybe we will see some 1U A4 based servers. An A4 based server with two net ports some sata ports and wifi could be a great solution for a small business. Come up with a VOIP solution that works with the iPhone over wifi and you could have really slick solution. The VOIP PBX could sense when your wifi client is logged in and could route calls to your iPhone over VOIP. When you leave the office it could then route them to your cell number. Asterix can already do some of that but I could see Apple making it all nice and pretty.
Of course Apple could just walk away from the datacenter. They are making money hand over fist as it is and the iPhone and Macbook are already in the enterprise space. The iPad is also heading into it very quickly. Maybe hardcore servers are not something Apple really wants to do.
They could by why bother? They had Google Maps probably on some nice small mobile device. Have you ever tried to check a GPS display with a map? I have to wonder if this wasn't part of some ongoing boarder issues. Just about every boarder was drawn before GPS and let's face it that part of world has some pretty think jungles.
Actually I don't see why this would be an issue. You can run X on OS/X and WIndows so running X on top of Unity is probably going to be okay as well. The reality is that very few programs use X directly. Most everything goes through GTK or QT. There is a version of GTK that runs on just the framebuffer already for embedded development.
In theory you could pick GTK, QT, or some other frame work to replace X and then run X on that. You could also have QT for GTK if you really wanted too. Just to be clear I am not sure that GTK or QT have all the feature you want in a moder graphics system. A lot of people still have issues with X as display tech. A big one I hear about all the time is that it doesn't unify video display with printing. It may be time to let X go. At least someone is going to try. Who know it may be the best thing to happen to Linux in a long time.
Way too many people don't understand what "Freedom of Speech" means. Freedom of Speech means that I can not stop you from speaking your ideas. It does not mean that you can flat out lie. It does not mean that I do not get to judge you for what you are going to say. It does not mean that I have to publish what you say. It does not mean that I have to listen to what you say. It does not mean I can not tell you that I do not agree with what you say.
In this case if the Government told Google that they couldn't publish those videos then it "might" have been an issue. But even in the US it is illegal for someone to tell people to commit acts of violence.
Actually I doubt that do have better information than Google does. Not that many nations have the resources to spend on that type of tool that the US, NATO, Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, and so on do. A lot of nations will get that type of Data from the US or Russia depending on who they are friends with at the time. Heck for a long time U2 pilots where buying handheld GPS units because the U2 was still waiting for it's official upgrade. Later the units bought them as a COTS rescue aid but used them for navigation. I actually read about B-1 units wiring in unofficial GPS antennas and using notebooks for navigation while waiting for that plane to get it's update. Nothing is unusual about this except that in this case it came back to byte them. BTW Google maps are not that accurate in many places so if you are going to use them to navigate and RPV I would double check them.
Netbooks are so small that if did need to work on routers I would probably carry one with me. Frankly for the serial hack on the iPad/iPhone I can see one great use. The new IPhone has gyros to go along with the GPS and accelerometers. Throw in the camera and Cell interface and it makes one heck of an autopilot:) I am just waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out and then pick up one cheap on ebay and jailbreak it. Use the serial interface to talk to a servo controller board and you have a wifi sniffing war flying drone!
Google is far form the sole source of videos on the internet. My companies website hosts videos and there are a number of other sites that do as well. I just don't see that as an issue. It would be like demanding that Comcast carries your network.
If the US government ordered them to be taken down that would have made it a freedom of speech issue. Yes the UK ministers need to understand that the government would have great difficulty in taking down those videos. They would have to prove that they crossed the line into incite to violence. The classic "you can not yell fire in a crowded theater". That really is a high legal bar in the US. In the US political and religious speech are given the highest protections with commercial speech given less protection. Which I feel is a good thing.
In this case Google decided that they violated their terms of service so it was easy to take them down.
Britian asked Google to take down the videos. Google can do what it wants with it's site. This has nothing to do with freedom of speech because the US government isn't making them.
Well for administering a router then a netbook beats both the N900 and the iPad. The AngryBirds comment was a joke. Wow the Nokia fanboys are the most rabid on the planet. They rival the Amiga users of which I was one. Take a deep breath. I don't have an iPad, N900, or a netbook.
Well if you are not typing it isn't there. For surfing the web and reading email you get the bigger screen. And why not a notebook? A not book with as nice of a screen and as long of a battery life is very expensive. The N900 in an interesting machine but it doesn't replace the iPad. And notebooks are very nice for some uses but for a lot people an iPad is a better solution.
It really all depends on how you are going to use it. For watching video, and surfing the web the iPad is a very good solution. Plus does the N900 have AngryBirds?
A lower dollar means that domestically produced goods will cost less and our exports will cost less while imports cost more. It means more jobs in the US making stuff. A lower dollar is actually a good thing in many ways because it does make imports more expensive. Food and housing are not imported so....
Not if they are Microsoft Office shops. Or are teaching Visual Basic or any number of other Microsoft products. As much as I like Linux it isn't the solution everywhere.
1 Bush was not a a trickle down republican. 2 The economy bubbled during Clinton and the crash was already starting when he left office. You had the Internet bubble, super low oil and gold prices, and the housing boom starting. If you don't understand a classic bubble when you see it. Look at the run up in stock prices at that time. Clinton didn't do a thing to decrease the bubble. That great economy that you saw during the Clinton years is what we are paying for now. Clinton did very little to reverse any of Bush's ideas. Just as Obama is now dealing with the result of the last administration the improved economy in Clintons first two or three years in office was the result of Bush's policies.
You are being way to simplistic. Clinton and Bush jr both ran the economy like a drunken sailor would run a brothel. The reasonable president we had was Bush Sr but the his defeat as far as I can tell was the death of compromise and civility. For those of you too young to remember that was a classic case of stupidity. Bush compromised with the Democrats in Congress and raised taxes to try and cut the debt. During the election Clinton ran the "Read my lips ad and pointed out that Bush did raise taxes!" Wow so people voted in a Democrate because the Republican president cooperated with a Democratic congress! Both sides now know that compromise will get you a knife in the back.
Actually in theory Obama is doing the correct thing by spending at this time. Interest rates are super low so debt is relatively cheap. The cost of labor and materials is also relatively low so now is the time to spend on public works and military projects. "Remember that warships, tanks, and airplanes are made in the US by US workers.".
The real problem with economics is that what Governments should do runs counter to what individuals should do! During the Clinton admin he should have been cutting federal spending, raising taxes, and raising the interest rate. The economy was growing too fast as was in a bubble. He should have done everything to slow the growth. With the surplus the US should have been buying Oil "which was cheap for our strategic reserve and gold which was also cheap" That would have also raised the Oil prices and gold prices. If that had happened when Oil and Gold spiked and the economy dumped they could sell off the commodities "lowering the prices" and used that money for increased government spending. Of course who would vote for a president that cuts public programs when we have a budget surplus and spends when we are broke? Thing is that is what should be done.
These are kind of cute but I have to wonder why? I mean why not a tiny box that could use POE or a wall wart? Maybe even build it into a keyboard? They only benefit I see to having to bolt these into the wall is in a school or a public place where theft would be a concern. Other than that it seems more pain then gain to me.
It was also when only the brave would try to do real work with it. Cutting edge is okay to play with at home. I will take Centos or Ubuntu Server for production systems thank you. Fedora is for the brave of heart and abundance of free time.
Funny but I remember when we did alpha, beta, and Gamma releases. Alpha was internal testing only. Beta was testing outside the company. Gamma was feature and UI complete only bug fixes. Then you did release.
It isn't education as much as human nature. Let's say that three candidates are running. Mary, Bill, and Joe. You really think Bill is the best candidate. You really hate Joe because he is an Extreme in one direction (you pick). You are not all that fond of Mary because she is an Extreme in the other but at least she isn't as bad as Joe! I mean Joe is just nuts. So a poll comes out and Joe and Mary each have 40% of the vote and Bill has 20%. Next pole comes out and Joe and Mary each have 42% of the vote and Bill now has 16. People will start to flood to the other candidates because they dislike the other front runner and do not want to see them win. So we end up with more polarization and more extreme candidates. A centrist will not stand a chance aka a compromise candidate. Frankly I feel polling is hurting the democratic process more than helping at this point. Not only that but it is getting abused to high heavens. Big money candidates will send out pollsters ahead of them and then tailor their message to that crowd. The better they get at polling the beter they will be at manipulating the electorate.
Actually I would like to see the polling banned. It introduces way to much bias into the process. People tend to not want to throw away their vote so once a canidate is in the lead people tend to want for them or not for them instead of the person that they think is the right one.
That and they should keep primary results a secret until every state votes.
It is funny but I had a long drawn out discussion about the value of randomizing ballots and bias. This bias is probably a million times greater than who is first on the ballot.
Since everybody has the right to a secret ballot make it illegal to ask people how they will vote or have voted!
Because it is far from a dead horse. Even if they are replaced in cars it will be hard to replace them for heavy trucks, gensets, ships, and aircraft. There isn't a good replacement for them for cars yet! Think about gas turbines as an example. The first ones production jets entered service in 1944. It was about ten years before the first all jet heavy bomber entered service and the last piston heavy transport didn't leave USAF service until the 1960s. People are still making IC engines for aircraft today because for some uses it is the best solution. The same goes for steam turbines as well. I mean common steam is so 19th century. It is unwise to stop development on a mature working tech for one that may provide a solution in the future. A better IC engine could find a home in a next gen serial hybrid like the Volt or in a large truck.
