I actually like MDI for some tasks. Even Apple uses an MDI of sorts in Safari. What do you think a Tabbed browser really is? Okay so KDE 3.5 doesn't listen to the hints? And that is Gimps fault? What about KDE 4? What about Gnome? Does it work there? "Do the makers of photoshop make their program behave stupid and claim it's Windows' fault that it behaves stupid? No, they make sure their program WORKS in the desktop that people use." Which people? Gimp runs on Linux, OS/X, Windows, BSD, and Solaris... Probably a few more. If you ran Photoshop under Wine and it work wonky would you call up Adobe and pitch a fit? Try Gimp under Gnome and see if it has the same issues. Then try it under KDE 4.x.
Also Gnome and KDE both offers a multi desktop interface. You could open your browser on one and keep one dedicated to Gimp. Actually a nice option for a lot of people. Just like Spaces on the Mac.
I do think that having an MDI as an option is a good thing. I think that tool bars can even be useful even though I think they tend to be abused to death. And tabs are a nice UI option as well for some applications. I am all about choice but some of your complaints seems miss directed.
Hummm. No not really. You may want to use the term inertia but it really is backward compatibility that gave Windows it's advantage. When Windows 3.11 started making big gains it was because you could run your dos applications in it. And you could run more than one. There was almost zero windows software that really mattered. Probably the first Windows only program that a large number of people was probably office and Netscape+Trumpet Winsock.
What is the major complaint with Vista really? It is that a lot of older software isn't running well on it. It lacks the easy backward compatibility that XP offers. That combined with the lack of any features that really improve the average users life is why people hate it. Pain with little gain. Just like the X86 ISA the biggest strength is now and always has been backward compatibility. Backward compatibility==large software base.
Not really. Moving from distro to distro really isn't that that hard. Ubuntu is really nice and Ubuntu server is gaining a lot of traction. Red Hat is still very popular. If you want a JOB now I suggest that you install and learn Centos. While your at it learn Ubuntu as well. The more you learn the better. Goodness knows we don't want to be like the people that think Mac OSX sucks just because it isn't Windows. Or that where so sure that Vista would rock.
A lot of people don't understand the value in support. Big companies do. Do you fix your own car? You will save a lot of money if you do the work yourself. Did you build your own home? Time has value. If you LIKE working on cars then fixing your own is fun. If you LIKE building building your own home sounds great. But for a company they make money doing x and a computer is just another tool. It is better to pay an expert than to do it yourself.
Oh I am sure that a very low speed pic would work. I have already worked with rotary encoders. If I make it interrupt based it will not be bad at all. Wonder what else I could hack on to that> humm...
Not nitpicking. Off the grid folks often do more harm than good as far as being green. Most use Gensets. Odds are their carbon footprint will be much higher than for grid connected folks. They are also adding to sprawl. I love the tech involved but just how green they are is very questionable. Of course I am all for the safe alternative energy system that has been safe and proven for decades. It produces very little carbon and is domestic. Too bad they have not built any for the last 20 or so years in the US.
Why not just Newspapers? Why not TV? Blogs? Magazines? What is the Press these days? I am all for the press not endorsing candidates but I just don't see that happening.
So you are a doctor? Just how will you fuel your genset? Pick up a copy of HomePower sometime and you will see a lot of ads for gensets. Also even if you have a windmill, solar, and maybe even a small hydro system so that you can live without a gen set are you sure that you will not have your inverter blow up? We are talking a huge EMP. Also no internet, landline, and or cell.... Seems like it would be better to try and plan to keep our modern society than too move to the woods.
Humm... I guess I could get a comfort keyboard and then hack in an USB hub and and then attach a USB Pic or avr chip to one of those ports. Then I could add a rotary encoder where to the PIC and then write a driver to use that to adjust the volume. The one issue would be power. Would the USB port supply enough to run the hub, pic, keyboard, Mouse, and maybe a flash drive? Most hubs have four ports so why use one for the keyboard, one for the volume and then have two free? I really wish that they would just sell one:)
I have a bunch of old Ms. I stopped using them because I didn't like the noise. If I could make the perfect keyboard for me. I would take the Microsoft comfort keyboard that I have now and add a USB hub to it for a mouse "I hate wireless for the desktop " and I would add a volume knob like may old POS HP multi-media keyboard had. Of course other people have different wants and needs.
Yes it does matter for software. Moving from system to system IS A MAJOR PAIN and very expensive. And Yes going to Slashdot is just dumb. Why is it dumb? Because if you don't treat FOSS as a professional system to start with why should anybody believe you. So what this guy should have done is go the the Drupal website and then found this page. http://drupal.org/cases Golly gee case studies about how Drupal can be used. Just like you would find at any closed source vendors site. Interested in Liferay? Guess what they sell it with support. It is still FOSS but I bet you a dollar that if you contact them they have many case studies and other sales tools that they can provide you. If you just want some more case studies... http://www.liferay.com/web/guest/products/portal/stories Merry Christmas. Here is your clue.
Linux Samba MySQL Postgresql Apache Perl Python Ruby Gcc PHP Java Asterisk I think you will find all of these in large corporations. AKA "Enterprise" situations.
Sorry as much or more. You are correct it is a little cheaper for the Hardware and you get more ram. What value do you put on say iLife and the better graphics of the new mini? The mini still isn't a lot more expensive than the Dell.
Okay how do you find the data without a record number? I can see the value of the system but it also seems very inflexable. I do agree that way to many programmer use MySQL for a file system, flat files, configs, and goodness knows what else.
Radar speed cameras are the ones I don't like. I really don't like the idea of using these things as a profit center but for enforcement? I was rear ended when I was STOPPED at a red light. The kid didn't see my BRAND NEW CAR or the red light until it was too late! So I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about this.
I don't know but when I watch top gear they talk about miles per hour and miles per gallon. When I read Bike Magazine I see 0-60 times and miles per gallon even though they give the tank size in liters!. When I go to UK car websites they also give miles per gallon.
Seems like the US isn't the only country that uses none SI units in the press. I am willing to bet that they used SI for the actually engineering.
1 lb = 0.453592 Kg is your conversion formula. Now get over it and move on.
I got news for you. Yes the CPUs are the same. Even the Memory is the same. The rest of the PC isn't. I don't think you really can get the same parts for less. The Dell Studio PCs are close t a mac mini but they cast as much or more than a Mini. Mac Pros are very expensive but not more so than any other machine in the same class. There just isn't a Mac in the cheapo Celeron with Intel integrated graphics range.
If you Need to run Windows only software you are correct. The thing is that for a very large number of people they really don't. Most people use their PCs to surf the web, email, and play with digital photos. Now if Apple would port iTunes to Linux that would really help Linux on the Desktop. But yes if you must use Windows XP right now is the best bang for the buck.
First of all I don't think the price difference is anywhere near $500. The simple truth is that Apple doesn't make any cheap PCs. They all seem to be well made with good components and with good support. All that really does cost money. I have only owned three apple products and all of them are iPods. They are all well made and have outlasted every other MP3 Player I have owned. My old Nano is just sitting since I got a touch but it works just fine. Ballmer may be correct. Except that what that means is that people will settle for Windows but they still really want a Mac. That makes Windows what you get when you can not get anything else. It also means that Windows could loose to Linux since it is even cheaper. Not a good place to be. They are in the middle. Plus Apple can always produce a cheaper PC if they want to. Can Microsoft make an OS cheaper than Linux?
I know a lot of people that want a Mac the price puts them off. Guess what folks. All Apple has to do is produce a new Mac that is a little bigger than a Mini that uses desktop parts. Bingo cheaper Mac. Apple is still making money hand over fist. Even the $500 logo is a load of monkey muffins. Lets take a look at the Adamo by Dell
1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 2GB 800MHz 128GB3 solid state drive Starting Price $1,999
Okay now lets look at the MacBook Air. 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB Memory 120GB SATA hard drive1 $1,799.00
The Air is $200 cheaper. Now you do get DDR3 and and SSD on the Adamo but the price just isn't that great.
At the high end the Dell is also $200 more expensive and you get the SSD with the air but an extra 2GB of ram on the Dell. I just don't see $500 their.
The Mini is expensive for a desktop machine but it starts at $599 and I have not seen a $99 PC that has the features of a Mini.
So Windows is now the Walmart house brand of PCs. Hey times are hard and people don't have the money to buy the stuff they really want so they will buy a PC with Windows on it. Good one Ballmer the problem is that Linux is EVEN CHEAPER.... Ouch...
Then you should be running a Power5. Actually most people don't need the fastest CPU. If you do then get the top of the line I7 or a two socket workstation motherboard.
I actually like MDI for some tasks. Even Apple uses an MDI of sorts in Safari. What do you think a Tabbed browser really is?

Actually from what I have heard Apples support is pretty good. But then I never call support so I can only go by what I read.
First of all I don't think the price difference is anywhere near $500.
The simple truth is that Apple doesn't make any cheap PCs. They all seem to be well made with good components and with good support. All that really does cost money.
