"Obama had *lots* of attacks on McCain " You mean like how McCain was a Bush clone?
You are right in that bias is in the eye of the beholder. Many people feel Fox is fair and balanced just as many people feel the Washington Post is. The key is if the news service shares you bias then you see it as unbiased. To be honest every liberal should only get their news from Fox and every conservative should only get their news from NPR. I do feel that McCain got a bad deal. I think he would make a good president and this to be honest was his last chance at it. That being said I really do hope Obama is a good president I wish him all the luck in the world.
Actually this is going past what Apple has done. Microsoft is going to extend this to PCs and not just their mobile product. I have been saying that one of the Linux distros should have done this a long time ago. Click n run wasn't a bad idea it was just tied to a not so good distro. This is actually a good idea and a bad thing that say Red Hat, Ubuntu, or Suse didn't do first.
1. I am not from the UK. 2. Bletchley Park is where it is. Moving it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. 3. Think about the amount we are talking about. A new Roof? Google spends that on free soda, Microsoft on one really dumb ad, and Apple on??? We are talking about nest to nothing. And Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Intel all make money and sell products in the UK so they are already there.
True but then you have the issue of what do you do in Windows when things go poorly. I have more problems with Windows drivers than I ever did with Linux. But that is just me.
I have not had those issues with Ubuntu at all and I have been using it for a while. You might want to try OpenSuse. I think SAX is a much better X configuration program than what is shipped in Ubuntu. It is just that I like the rest of Ubuntu more than OpenSuse.
"Rockets aren't airliners. Lift is equivalent to thrust, lift capacity is constrained by numerous factors - of which thrust is only one." None of which have a lot to do with an aero dynamic bring back. The shuttle isn't just a rocket. It is a rocket and a glider combined. The shuttle's bring back is limited by the strength of the landing gear and the structure that supports it. Like the wing spars. It is also limited by the wing loading since that has an impact on the landing speed and landing stresses. So no in this case your incorrect decreasing the shuttles bring back doesn't have to decrease it's lift capacity.
If they had reduced the shuttle's bring back they could have saved weight on the landing gear and the wing structure. It would have only had a positive effect on the shuttle's cargo capacity since the resulting shuttle would be lighter. In fact with a smaller cross range requirement and a lower bring back requirement the shuttle could have easily been a lifting body.
"If you reduce bring back capacity you also reduce lift capacity, the two are directly related." No they are not. The bring back is limited by the lift of the wings and the strength of the landing gear. Lift is limited by thrust. A prime example is many airliners can take off with a lot more weight than they can land with. And man you are nit picking. I was speaking of an abort to Kennedy. Which would be very clear since a mentioned that you would still be overweight to land. In an ATO you could dump your cargo and make a normal landing.
Hey Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Intel. Each of you are swiming in cash and this is your history. Why not pony up some bucks for History. While your at it the Apollo 1 launch pad is also fading away.
Not exactly. I probably should have made the statment clearer. The shuttle has an excessive bring back capability that is hardly ever needed. Every space craft has some bring back capability. The shuttle's is HUGE and as I said hardly ever used to it's maximum. The shuttle could have been lighter if the it had a reduced bring back capability. Of course you do loose another capability and that is a safe abort that saves the vehicle. If the shuttle couldn't land with a full load then if an abort happened the crew would have to bail out and loose the ship. Of course we have never had an abort yet.
"if I was running a business of 10+ computers, I would want to do it the binary/package way." Let's face it 10 machines isn't a lot. And a lot of home users don't want to compile anything. And I do think that low performance drivers should be moved to user space. No reason for a serial port driver, mouse, or keyboard driver to ever cause a kernel panic. Not only that but a high performance driver could start off in user space and then migrate to kernel space when it is mature or if the admin wants it to. So a server could have it's video and sound drivers moved into user space for extra stability.
"Contrast this situation to Linux, which almost has a stated goal to NOT have a stable driver API. " Linux Does have a stable API. What it does lack is a stable binary interface. And that I think is a problem.
Frankly if race has any bearing it is discrimination. It is always going to happen to one degree or another people tend to be comfortable with people like themselves. My guess it is genetic to be honest. The thing is that over 95% of African Americans voted for Obama. So yes I would say that race had a big part in it. Racism is a human problem. It is not limited to a single race.
"I agree that nuclear power has matured, but I think the waste is something that can get into groundwater, etc etc." That is why you reprocess the waste like France, the UK, and Japan does. Also solar thermal is very location specific, ocean currents very unproven, wind as you pointed out has issues. I am all for research into those but if you want to build a very low carbon foot print power plant in the many mega watt range right now you have one choice. I also don't like Obama's space policy, and several other policies but unlike a lot of people I am actually pulling for him to do a good job. Heck if he sucks we just kick him out in four years. If he is good then it is a win for everybody.
why not run sshd on them? You can even do ssh tunneling and use scp. Plus if you ever put them on the internet you will not have to "remember" to take telnet off.
Actually on Fox News this morning they where being very up beat on Obama. They said he ran a great race and other compliments. So I guess that is a lie as well? Heck I really hate Fox News and most other news services to be honest but they did seem to be supportive this morning.
Not really. I am not a fan of racism and I hope Obama has a very successful term or two in office. But every African American that voted for him just because he is African American is just as racist as every none African American that didn't vote for him just because he was African American.
Heck I didn't support him because of his policy on nuclear fuel recycling and nuclear power in general. But he is going to president and all I can say is I hope he is a great one.
"Perhaps you should press for open specs and open code next time you buy a $200,000 piece of hardware, if your spending that much the company should bend over backwards to provide what you need..." You don't write software for a living do you. You also probably don't deal with these types of systems. The company may be under a several NDAs on some of the hardware they are using. So you figure that they should look for hardware that isn't under NDA? Well good luck they may not exist. Next you may have bought some software libs that you use in your program. You will not have the option to open source those.
So the customer could just look for a company that offers them Open Specs and code.... Well they can look but they probably will not find any.
I have dealt with software libraries that the parent company decides to stop supporting. IT SUCKS. I will avoid that situation at all costs these days. BUT sometimes you have no real choice.
Pretty much. And frankly wings are not that heavy. The shuttle didn't just have a very large crossrange requirement but also a huge bring back capability. The Shuttle is capable of bringing the Hubble back to be worked on if needed. In fact the plan was for the Shuttle to bring back the Hubble so it could sit in a museum when it's life is over. It is a capability that has never really been used except for the SpaceLab flights. Frankly the Shuttle was an attempt to jump from the Wright Flyer to a 707. We really needed to build a Ford Trimotor and a DC-3 first.
Have you seen the sales contract for these voting machines? What about the tech guide? What about the trouble shooting manual? For all we know they do offer a the source for Ghostscript. I really think this is more about money then GPL enforcement. Heck I am all for following the GPL but as I said I think this is more about money then freedom. I am even all for them getting paid. What I don't like is the wrapping a copyright dispute in the GPL when they really are not connected.
The one thing I have always wondered about is must you supply the source if you don't modify the source. If the source is already freely available then what is the point?

It is stable "or should be" between major releases. There was a big change between 2.4 and 2.6 for instance.
"Contrast this situation to Linux, which almost has a stated goal to NOT have a stable driver API. "
Linux Does have a stable API. What it does lack is a stable binary interface. And that I think is a problem.
But did any of them weigh close to the bring back limit? I don't think so.
"' passthrough dongles daisy-chained out the parallel (or maybe it's SCSI) port."
Sounds like it could be an IEE-488 bus.
And it is standard.

Telnetd is one of those things that should just be deleted from every system that it is on.
Just use SSH folks.
