Yeah, but whenever somebody in the media says "internet", the mean "web", and the pc had everything to do with that. As much as it pains me to admit.

Ok, what? How can he not be power-hungry and at the same time think he's the most special person in the world, who "single-handedly advanced the human race" into the info age? The difference between thirsting for power and thinking you're entitled to it, all of it, by merit of your own superior worth is a very fine line.

First off, CHILL with the all caps, and 2nd, read your history. He took every idea (and this isn't something we /.ers made up) he ever had from people who didn't see their value and basically gave them to him. His one skill is foresight, which is deserving of some respect, surely, but there are lots of people who have had geater foresight than he and never received, and occaisionally never even asked for, rewards. Add to that that he takes credit for just about every innovation in computing exept for the transistor and you may begin to see where this dislike came from. 'Kay?

Actually, he bought a "quick-and-dirty" version of a DOS (not DoS) that has been argued to be a simple decompilation of another commercial product of the time, with a few cosmetic changes made. If this is true, it would mean his whole empire *started* on unethical foundations from the start. Which is why nobody has the balls to talk about this. :)

Why don't the intelligent, informed, polite readers of slashdot inform MTV of their errors? They just might pay attention.

I think this was a production of their news section, so you can mail mtvdart@aol.com with your comments. Of course, this may also fall under the umbrella of "shows", so you might want to use this page to send your feedback. I'm pretty sure the former is the case, however.

  11. l0pht not doing their job on MTV's Hacker Portrayal · · Score: 2

L0pht had the ear of a journalist (okay, that's debatable, but go with me) and apparently didn't even bother to emphasize how horribly the media continues to mangle the term "hacker". I personally expected better. Not from MTV, of course, but from the "community", L0pht especially. Not to mention the people they profiled aren't worthy of even the term "cracker", they're just script-kiddie web-page defacers. Serena repeated several times how these kids had broken into "some of the defense department's most secure computers". Which computers? their web servers! If those are their most secure computers, we're all fucked.

    Grumble.

The high school I attended (NAHS, SC) has used SSN's as ID numbers, on badges that you have to wear (with ridiculous penalties if you don't), unobfuscated, with the number written in plain text below, for about 6 years now. This is, as far as I can tell, the exact situation that the students in Louisiana are bitching about. Except for the fact that ours had our picture on it. I'm interested in the "violation of federal law" thing. anybody know any more about this?
