Sure, but even if industry supported devices 3 times as long as today, most likely they would still become unsupported prior to the product being physically unusable. If a company produces an internet-capable piece of hardware, are they on the hook to support it against all future attack vectors until the hardware rots?
buy the new phone, or stop using phones altogether.
Option b seems perfectly reasonable from a waste management perspective, especially when we are talking about personal phones (we want them, we certainly don't need them) - and to be fair I did miss the AC saying they wouldn't participate any longer, and I assume that means not buying newer phones. I certainly would be unwilling commit to that, which means I too am part of the problem.

Recycling Is Dying

This might've been insightful if you'd removed "Americans". I'm in a canadian middle-income neighbourhood, and even here we have households who never put out a recycle bin. We have 3 programs here: rigid plastics & metal, paper & cardboard, and compost. It is paid for by taxes, and if it wasn't then many more would opt out. Even the bins are given out for free by the city. Thankfully most people realize that when our city's current dump fills up, it will cost far more to start shipping to the next available site, so diversion is a high priority.
The only non-recycling person I've ever spoken to about it said that she doesn't bother because sorting is too complex - so in my experience the kind of people who don't recycle are mainly just stupid, or have zero sense of community. And I only spoke to her because she had left a TV sitting on her curb for a month, it boggled her mind that such things can't be thrown out in the trash anymore.
If I accessed a non-youtube URL and it redirected me to youtube, I would never use the original URL again because it is most likely some click-counting intermediary. YouTube is a well known and trusted video streaming site, while mylamedomain.com/youtubevideos is questionable unless you've already visited it.
YouTube was offering people branding by giving them simple URLs with their account name at the end, now they are taking away their offering from one individual and giving it to a company because money. It's scummy, it's selling out, and YouTube should know better than to treat their users this way.
Seems pretty obvious too. Facebook is a social media platform with policies specifically stating they want people to use their real identities. Facebook is not a whistle-blowing platform. Isn't that what wiki-leaks is for?
If this war were just Irrelevant Faction A versus Irrelevant Faction B, I'm sure the government would not put much effort into it, and you'd be right - let them cull the herd. But letting ISIS ranks swell is very likely to increase losses to foreign allies which is bad for the US - especially when you eventually get US citizens decapitating people in jihadist videos.
You aren't trying very hard then, since TFA clearly states that Uber is adding special bonuses and subsidies to attract drivers. They are weathering smaller profits and some losses to gain market share because there were existing players in the market.
By one account, Uber was handing drivers 300 yuan (about US$50) for every 30 trips and 400 yuan for every 40.
Seems like they need to add other metrics into their bonus system, like a minimum fare required to count towards the bonus.
No kidding. Not to mention any additional contact you have with the victim adds to your own risk of getting caught. People who pay out on ransomware are basically doubling down on their loss for the very very slim chance they will get anything back. Take this story, these idiots paid TWICE for the same ransom and still didn't their files back.
I don't understand why it is that only Canadians seem to bring this up
I'm a canadian, and until now I've only ever seen it brought up by people who I presume are american. Also bgarcia's invocation of it is really out of context, so this seems like a pretty bad example to jump on.
Here are some possibilities
1. Living so close to a place where there are $15/hr jobs, nobody wants to apply for a $10/hr job.
2. Being downtown, many people probably drop off resumes even those locations aren't hiring, so they likely don't need to advertise to get a pool of applicants.
Wait times can suck for minor boo-boos, but otherwise I've never had a problem with service. I'm sure that varies from place to place, just like it would in the US. Emergency services are great in my experience. I once had a migraine that left me unable to understand speech - I was immediately admitted, had an MRI done, was transferred via ambulance to another hospital with advanced neurology expertise, all within a couple hours. I am just another citizen. It's not perfect, but it works.
I'm willing to bet after the first notification, people just move to a VPN service to hide behind...
Not only this (and I know people who did exactly that), but people are also opting for VPNs to get around Netflix geo-blocking. I bet a lot of the Canadian reduction is mirrored in US increases.
So true. And there is still resistance to fixing it. In Ontario we currently have parents pulling their kids out of schools because of a sweeping modernization of our sex-ed curriculum. 5 years ago the reaction was so bad that the idea was shelved only 3 days after announcing it, but our current government is finally pushing it again. The reasons for the protests vary, from "How dare you teach my kid that homosexuality is normal" to "School should be about math and science and nothing else". Part of the problem is likely that the publicly funded Catholic school board is also being forced to provide this curriculum, which is really stirring up the deeply conservative. I can only hope the government sticks to their guns.
On a side note, I also see a lot of people in these protests saying sex-ed is for high school. There was a pregnant girl in my class in grade 6, she was 11 and it was from consensual sex with a 13 year old. Most of my friends were sexually active to some degree prior to high school.
Same thing happened to me after 3 years, and it wasn't until after that I realized how little that person invested in the relationship, even though it was quite clear to outside observers. My wife of 15 years is 100% the opposite despite having many things in common as the other relationship. At the outset of both relationships I don't think there were any indicators either way. And I too still think about that first relationship, though the bitterness has mostly faded:)
Canadian healthcare isn't perfect, nor will it ever be, but oh my god I cannot fathom what it must be like to need basic medical attention and have to decide if you can afford it. There may be a perfect solution, but if you can't figure out what that is then you start with something that is better than what you have (which is almost anything).
It's been over 60 years since pearl harbour. When it's been 60 years since 9/11 most people outside of New York probably won't immediately know it either.
Is there any alternative to Microsoft for getting XP support? If another company said, hey, we'll give you equivalent support at 1/10 the cost MS asks, would that be legal or would MS sue them into oblivion? My government agency is also paying these fees for some legacy systems running on 2003.
Thanks for that link. I see how it can happen - whatever agency is responsible for collecting child support has no desire to get mired in making moral decisions in the many unique situations that exist, so they stick exactly to their policies. It seems like they really need an appeal process for special cases. I bet some of these people could sue but they are probably in no financial shape to do so.

Why do you need a newer Android? Perhaps you are part of the problem.

No human owns the rights to the genes in your seeds...
You are technically correct, but only because corporations own those rights.

Yes they do, I know someone who received an infringement letter from TekSavvy. That person started using a VPN after their second notice.
Could be something else, too, of course
Here are some possibilities

Nothing similar to what you suggested comes up. I even added "test tube" and still nothing. Gonna have to agree that this is mostly snopes fodder.

You want a blonde with big tits today and a redhead with little tits tomorrow?
When I read this the first thing that popped into my head was "Why not Zoidberg?" I think something is wrong with me.

This is not specifically a Google problem. My iPhone 3GS battery life went from ~20 hours to 10 when iOS 5 was installed.
They don't have a facebook page yet, they had to pass this law first.
More than 2,815 fortnights ago, in fact.
