  1. Obfuscated Law Contest? on Is the POST Method Patented? · · Score: 1

Seriously, some of the patents and other such legal nonsense I've seen over the last few months make the Obfuscated Code contest look like preschool stuff. (not meant to degrade any of the amazing things those contestants do)

I can understand the probs the industry had with people copying VHS movies that cost about $50 to $75, but when the medium (DVD) is retailed for barely more than the effort to copy it, whats the point in copying it?

As for the region bullshit, what was that intended for? Some kind of wierd censorship idea?

Other than the fact that this bites, how exactly would they pull this off? Most sysadmins I know keep a pretty close eye on what goes in and out of systems that they operate. How would you be able to tell if it was the facist^H^H^H^H^H^H "internet" police "legitimately" grabbing something, and not somebody comprimising your system?

Well, I've seen many interesting points, opinions and rants posted here so far. I'm impressed at some of the posts, offended at others, but was thinking there may be something else here as well.

Being that "most" news sources (TV, newspapers, etc.) are commercial entities, they all have a common goal; money. In order to achieve that goal, they must sell their product. What do you think will sell your product? News that has been well researched, accurate and three weeks ago? Or news that happened 5 minutes ago, or is happening right now?

This tragic event happened scarcely two days ago, yet apparently there has already been enough time for psycological analysis to point in the direction of the Internet and video games.

I'm impressed. Not by the idea that such analysis could be performed in that time, but by the mere notion that people believe that it can be. I don't profess to know anything about forensic psycology, but I do know it takes a hell of alot longer than two days (in most cases, anyways).

The big unfortunate thing here (other than the tragic loss of life), is that capitalism is more important than the truth.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of all those lost. May we learn from our mistakes.

Okay, let me see if i understand this right. The whole point of Open Source is to expose ideas to the greatest possible knowledge base, right? I mean, who cares if I'm going to use an Apple based system or not. What if Apple had a Good Idea(tm) somewhere in their software? What if someone else running on another platform has a Good Idea(tm) for Apple? Both scenarios benfit everyone, right?

So yes, I agree with the article. Yes, the US government has some weird ideas about restricting knowledge, we know that. But doesn't the US government also have some notion of what freedom of expression is? Maybe somewhere along the line I misunderstood it, but I thought that US law garrantees freedom of expression and freedom of choice.

Silly me for thinking that that would include the freedom to share ones ideas.

APSL is close, but still not even in the same time zone...
