    Due to "creative" (computed) wiring, if all switchs are functioning, no node is more than one hop from each other node. This requires a routing table written for each pc. It could be used for redunancy, but it is being used to minimize latency, and collisions, which are both killers in clusters.

    If you showed up to your tabletop roleplaying group, and somebody said "Let's try something different, in from of you is a new character with background, and personality description; That character is who you'll be playing"

    Would that still be roleplaying?

    My answer would be yes.

    The problem is with the console rpg's is they don't require you to understand what you are playing.

    My example of how to fix this is in the Shannara video game the character you played was largely defined, you didn't handle most of the character interaction.
    But at the end there was a dialog puzzle where you talked to all the NPCS who died in your quest. I got through the first time because I understood what the character would say.

    I don't mind being railroaded in video games, but at some point I would like the game to trust me to make choices in line with the framework.

    Xbox is a whole lot nicer for linux.
    The ability to use X86 compiled software helps especially for closed source things or things with X86 assembly.
    Compiling stuff for PS2 sucks because some things just won't build with 32M.
    Setting up cross compile chains isn't something I enjoy.

    PS2 linux supports this which means PS2 can also theoretically do if if any titles choose to. The hardware doesn't prohibit HDTV, but it doesn't make it particularly easy. In linux there is no auto-detect for HDTV/NTSC/VGA, but the boot loader CD does it somehow.

    Why the vacuum chamber? A truly resourceful hacker would do a bit for bit copy and the reverse engineer the rest from that. Resourceful in hacking means least effort.

    Net profits of course.

    There would also be some allowance 10-15% for profit for the production of the product.

    The pill costs 3$ to make you can sell it for any price you want but anything over $3.45 goes against development cost then idea worth.

    Companies may decide to hold their patents longer in my system, but they will do it at reasonable terms.
    If you have a kick ass drug that is getting you good press and you are making money on production (not much) why let they product go?

    If you know you or someone else has another drug in the pipeline that is better you'll set the burn rate higher on your patent profit.

    How about a patent copyright system based upon an intrensic value for the work.
    The creation of a new musical composition is worth 1 million dollars a minute.
    If you chose to sell the cd for it at $20 your copyright will expire faster than if you chose to sell it at $6.
    Drug patents would benefit most, if a drug company prices a perscription prohibitly it will make it into public domain sooner,
    if they sell it at a reasonable profit over production costs then they can keep their patent longer.

    For the web try Perl:: Flash PerlMagik and Perl's GIMP bindings.
    On other fronts Perl-Tk Gtk-Perl and Perl Qt bindings.

    I think it should be OS, Apps and web. That way Windows can't shove IE down peoples' throats. And hotmail can't cram Outlook Express down peoples' throats and IE can't cram msn down peoples' throats.

    The best way a company can reward open source developers on a project is to allow them to keep
    working on them or other projects. Convince upper-brass to release more information ethier openly or with reasonable NDA's (ones that allow production of open source drivers and allow developers to work reasonable non-competitive jobs). Example Linus doesn't have a IA64 box because he works for transmeta. Give the people reasonable access to information no matter what there background.

    I don't think you can be made to sign any specific legal brief. Get a lawyer to wirte up something simple that signs over your rights to that idea/patent, but refuse to sign the patent application, for reasons of professional integrity or whatever. You don't attach you name to the application, but they own the idea whereever it goes.

    Somebody needs to clue this guy in. The distributions of linux use most of the same software so when Redhat, Caldera, SuSE, and TurboLinux report a vulnerability it is ONE vulnerability not 4. Divide 122 by 4 and you get 30.5 . That is a low estimate b/c of the less frequent 1 system vulnerabilities (Corel had a bunch and Redhat had a few with piranha).
    Another thing that SHOULD be factored in is vendor response time(to fix). A factor like number of vulnerable days would be a beautiful statistic.

    The way my first college CS tacher handled this was adding extra optional assignments to all the assignments.
    TIC-TAC-TOE(experiment with 2d arrays) had the added assignment for producing a computr player for it.
    Our sorting assignment for arrays had the optional assignment of replicating it with a linked list.
    Our binary tree assignment had the optional assignment of implementing it in C as well as Java.
    Basically you can keep the curriculum you have if it fits the low end CS Student and tack on other assignments for the more interested students. Also ask them to produce demos for a walkthrough for open house. Hand them the IEEE former problems from their programming contests.

    Compiling is cache intensive and disk intensive.
    K6-3/K6-2+/K6-3+ have on die cache which will help the first problem and I doubt your gf's computer has the same calibur drive that yours has. Also you don't specifically say that they have the same amount of ram so that's probly an issue also.
    K6-3 benchmarked better than pII of same Mhz for office applications and I've run some comparisions for compiling code which turned out in favor of the k6-3. I've got a TBird in my main box, and am building a k6-3 linux box will spare parts soon. I am very happy with them. Cache is god. My k6-3 400 drops less frames playing a DVD than a k6-2 550 in the same system.

    If they wanted to do this a SETI client would be silly. Try this one. NSA pays off Napster and offers legal aid. Napster releases a upgrade to the client. The license agreement says that they will sell your idle CPU cycles to recoup cost. *BAM* NSA is cracking codes. And no one would care as long as they get their MP3's.

    I think this will be overturned because it messes up too mant other legal issues. For example it would have effects on the cryptography restrictions now in place which prevent the linux crypto filesystem from being distributed. It also has security impacts because security exploits cannot be stomped on. If this isn't overturned we may well see a patch .... oops amendment to the constitution, because we know that hackers are more dangerous than murderers and drug dealers.

    Does anyone have the money and time to submit a block of say 15 patents:
    5 already patented items,
    5 physically imposible barred by the laws of physics items,
    and 5 obvious items drowned in lawyerspeak and technobabble.
    my suggestion for the last are
    the wheel,0 (Off),1 (On),fire, and the internet

    Then use the fact that some of them WILL get through as ammo for reform.

    I've thought of something I been wanting to try ever since I saw the Lego brick sorter on the web.
    Write a program involveing the light sensor that reads lego bricks as instructions.
    Example red motorA blue motorB green motorC
    Yellow not
    then follow the instruction with a duration
    coded somehow(Binary in gray and black???)
    use white as an insturction cap that says you are done taking input start program

    It would be and interresting programming project at least, but I'm sure with more instructions it could be useful.

    What's scaring me is at least part of what caused this was harassment of these students by other students and the media coverage isn't making it any better. All the members of the "trechcoat mafia" will have to switch schools, and goths at many schools will face increasing harassment because of it. This will lead to more kids .... specifically goths snapping. Media will cover it causing a circular problem.
    I am not a goth, but some of my friends are and they have fallen under increased scrutiny.
    The other thing that is scary about this is how ready people are to give up their freedom because of it. If problems of this nature continue our rights to free speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to bear arms will be restrcited to no avail. How can you stop someone who is willing to die for their cause?
