Part of the problem with living in the US is that we occupy 9.826 million square kilometers of land, our closest neighbors being Canada and Mexico. Resting in the Gulf are some other smaller countries, but there isn't a lot of interaction. Add an ocean of separation between the US and Europe and it becomes easy to view one's self as the most important country.
Ask a US Citizen who won WWII and you will likely be met with "Why America [sic] of course!"
