    ok how about this. one site sends out a bot. this bot hangs out on the remote machine, collecting info, or filling up its bag with data, then returns to report its findings. this way, the local remote site can then have rules on what is public info, info for a particular client, or not searchable at all, private. I've been thinking about this lately as a kind of shopping bot. there are lots of potentials, and lots of security issues...anyone for an apache mod?

    come on man...did you read th article? Each person is assigned an id. The only reason I can think that they would do that would be to insert the info into a db somewhere. And for those who dont think they are doing this for profittable reasons, then why in the f**k would they do it? for shits and grins? I'll never use their stuff ever again. I think this is a giant score for open source.

    OK...im not the design captain of the universe, but Im going to get nuts and say, that you can probably skim over lots and lots of code and get the general "gig" of whats going on. I don't think you need to pick aprat every line and to figure this out. It's not like they said, "There's a bug somewhere, FIND IT!. ready go.

    As others have pointed out, there are a few things wrong with that contest; first, the fact it sounds as if you're doing someone else's work for cheap, considering the cost of the book they're giving as a first prize. Second, the fact that if you can win this contest, well, you don't need the damn book anyway.
    ...and what about if you're not familiar with the design patterns in that book? Then you have to buy it. I got another one for you. Who has taken a college course only to have the professor tell you to buy a book he/she wrote.

    I've seen this guys name before, and I keep thinking... Is this the guy with the MS-Windows tattoo on his arm? I remember seeing a picture in a pc magazine of this insane zero with the windows tattoo on his arm, and I almost shit myself laughing, and thought, man bill must be proud. I mean. Does anyone remeber who that guy was, I wanna post his picture on the web, right next to a donkey's ass.

    i'm going to have to second you on that one that cmu did the initial work on afs, and now are doing coda. and as far as i'm concerned, if you're schools name appears on the bootup screen of hp's someone in the cs department somewhere has got some sauce...and don't forget the robotic van.

    excellent point. another blow to all the poeple who think e-cash/online everything is going to take over all business, BULLSHIT, we can't even keep our mail away from prying eyes, how is anyone supposed to trust a website with their account information? If I need a book, I'll take a ride to barnes-and-noble, and hang out for a bit...if some punk kid tries to steal my credit card, he's going to have to take it from me physically.

    Microsoft never released the protocol for their shared filesystems, but we have samba, and now that I think of it, diamond was uptight about giving out info on the rio, but we got that and a doc on how it was done. bottom line, no one is going to write any software that helps microsoft, and even if they released the source for nt, no one in the community would do anything with it besides talk about how win32 sucks...and don't even try to deny it. If i'm wrong, say it.

    I think you made a good point. It seems as though most companies want some dude to come in and go 24-7, and spit out code, regradless of quality, as long as it works. And this definitely reflects the s.e. practices across the entire industry..including where im at. Tons and Tons and Tons of SHIT!

    I don't understand these people either. I'd like to ask them, "Why they think they can control anything". They sure aren't the nra and like everyone else, If I want to play mp3's, I'll play mp3s. And here's a question for someone who has more knowledge of this..

    This makes me think of when me and a friend of mine where sitting around talking about a portable music player with no moving parts...and now today there it is....my diamond rio...on my desk, plugged into my alpha. I'm just pissed that it has a plastic case. I know those guys at diamond are tight wads, but for 200 bones, you'd think they'd house this baby in someting a little more "metal".

    O.K...Check this out. 1.99 for the plain jane cd. Perfect for most of us. The corporate chums are no doubt (if they buy linux) going to buy the $50.00 cd with all the (whatever else is on it). RedHat knows this. Compare to win95 or some other version of windows. It costs a phone call or walk to your buds house, because I know most of you who are using it, stole it, and don't try bullshitting me. All the corporate chums are going to pay whatever it costs, I have no idea ;), for the cd and get the license. Microsoft knows this. I gotta go party.
