-Accept modified units but charge out-of-warrantee repair fees. This works fine until someone puts a Mazda turbo on the Studebaker engine and posts results to the net. Suddenly, Ford has to send all mechanics to Studebaker AND Mazda school (and narrows hiring choices to mechanics who know Ford, Studebaker, and Mazda, which are very scarce in Silicon Valley and want premium cash & stock options) and negotiate parts deals with Mazda

Things may have changed, but isn't Ford the majority owner of Mazda anyway? I know that many parts are interchangable between the two makers (esp. Ranger/B Series)

Tobacco litigation is all about the tobacco companies concealing health truths from the public at large.

Sure they lied about the health impact, but any smoker who was dumb enough to honestly believe them was willing to be deceaved. Suing a company and rewarding it by awarding billions of dollars in litigation dollars becuase you were too stupid to listen to your own body is just wrong.

I'm not a napster user but this trend of taking away personal responsibility will be the death of small innovative business in this country because only the mega-corporations will be able to afford to stay in business. I certainly hope that Napster is able to win out in the end, but I'm not holding my breath. Whatever happened to the days of "let him pull the TV on his head, he won't do it again if he does"? Today we'd be more likely to sue the TV manufacturer for having made a heavy object with a higher then necessary center of gravity.

  8. Comment Filtering & other thoughts on Interview: CmdrTaco and Hemos Tell All · · Score: 1

One of the things I'd love to see in future versions of Slashdot is the ability to not only set a minimum comment score, but a maximum score as well. This would allow for easy filtering of comments based on their scores (maybe I've got moderator points to use and want to see only the posts below 2? Or only the ones 1-3?) With the increasing size of the story discussions it's becoming really hard to visually filter these things out.

Another niceity [sic?] would be the ability to zap your own posts to -1 or lower if you either realize you screwed up the post or changed your mind about what you said. This should be an irreversable action.

On the subject of not being able to effectively make money off of an NNTP interface to slashdot... One obvious solution comes to mind and that is to charge a minimal amount for that access while keeping the web interface free. I for one would be willing to pay a moderate (say $15-30) yearly fee to access slashdot via NNTP.

And finally, it would be nice to be able to have two different sets of defaults - one for when you're not a moderator and one for when you are. For example, my web browswer chokes on all the drop down lists in big stories so it's nice to set the number of stories per page kinda low, lower my comment threshold, etc but for normal slashdotting, I prefer different settings.

  9. Compaq DISA on Suggestions for a Startup Web Company · · Score: 1

Compaq has lots of good (free) information in their ActiveAnswers section. Specifically referring to Linux & Apache

Basically you seperate the web servers from the data from the application servers (cgi). Their testing revealed that it scales very well (adding a server under DISA typically created more benefit than if each server was self-contained). This will probably require more hardware initially but will allow you to add power where needed.

As for bandwidth, more is always good, but you should be able to use tools like mrtg to help you determine if you've got the optimal + headroom or not. If you can co-lo you might reduce some of the initial expenses (no need for a data room, getting the telco to bring the pipes in, power, etc) but you'll probably lose some flexibility.

We use the UltraMatrix models at work, and except for some keyboard port wierdness with our HP systems (which they flew an engineer from Texas to our site to write the custom firmware fix at their expense to fix) we haven't had any problems with these things. I like the way they can be cascaded (up to 250 feet apart even).

  11. Re:Belkin OmniCube 4-port on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 2

I have one of these both at home and work. The biggest gripe I have with them is that if you reboot a system or power one on, without letting it have the keyboard/mouse focus chances are pretty good that you'll get keyboard/mouse errors from that system until you do. If you're going to go Belkin, get the 8 port model. It doesn't seem to have that problem and you can do neat things like label the channels and daisy-chain multiple units together if you go over 8 systems. At work our "official" KVM switch is from Rose Electronics. These things really kick ass compared to the Belkins. You can have multiple heads hooked up to some models and daisy chain them together as well. The systems can be labeled for easy selection/remembering where you're at. We use the UltraMatrix models. Check out their product line at http://www.rosel.com
