The OP doesn't seem to know what he is talking about, or at least didn't describe the situation well. As you say, there is no such thing as a world wide patent. If they have an issued patent, it's too bad they didn't mention the patent number.
I have thought for a long time that Lost in Space is to Star Trek as The Munsters is to the Addams Family. Evidently every genre has a market for mediocre. Or maybe they were targeted for different age groups.

News flash - there were a lot of folks in the work force during the past 50 years who were never an office worker, and the poster did not imply otherwise. Why do you assume that he worked in an office where "everybody was shopping online at lunch"? Maybe he was delivering mail, or whatever.
