  1. Re:IRC? on Kazaa Admits to Morpheus Shutdown · · Score: 1

I have no use for audio cds anymore. If I do buy them, I just encode them to .mp3 and put the original in a pile. For a mobile solution, I listen to minidiscs. What's important is that I DO support the bands. Being the poseur punk rocker that I am, I constrantly buy t-shirts, patches, stickers and what have you in addition to seeing my favorite bands live when I get the chance. This is a much better solution than generating all this waste in the form of audio cds.

  2. Re:i think they screwed up bad on Kazaa Admits to Morpheus Shutdown · · Score: 1

It's impossible for users to exercise civil disobedience against new versions. Since they just demonstrated control over authentification, they can easily not authenticate the older clients forcing everyone to upgrade.

  3. Boycott Relatable's player! on Napster Licenses "Acoustic Fingerprinting" · · Score: 1

Does anyone remember when Napster used gracenote, or CDDB to get their list of songs to block? One look at the program tells me that Relateable is going to take the fingerprints of songs that it creates, and turn them around and sell that database! By creating signatures with that program, you are adding to the machine keeping you from your music. This is probably a pretty radical post, but just remember that you will be helping the RIAA's cause by using the player found on that page. They just got all the media coverage they needed today, everyone is viewing their page because everyone can't stop talking about the new beef with Napster. I really can see this one coming. Don't let them take over.

  4. Boris the Sprinkler new years show on Monolith Appears In Seattle · · Score: 1

I went to this local show for new years, and the lead singer of this one band, who is always dressing weird, dressed like the monolith from 2001 and played the whole show like that. To make this clear, he jumped around on stage for about an hour in a cardboard box painted black! Just thought someone might find that useless piece of information interesting.

  5. My elite mp3 jukebox setup on Streaming MP3 For Linux Server Guide · · Score: 1

I have an extra computer with 40gigs of space setup as an mp3 jukebox. I am using samba to load the mp3s onto the computer from my windows (sorry) machine to the linux machine. Then I am using MP3MASTER that I found at freshmeat to play mp3s. It works really well, it has a webpage interface that you can play your mp3s with, so you just set that as your startpage and whenever you want to pick mp3s to play, you just open your browser and get a well organized list to pick from. You can allow other people to pick songs from the net, or just yourself. Then connected to the soundcard of the linux box is a home speaker setup. Eventually I want to throw this setup into an FM radio if that Low Power license thing ever becomes a reality. There is also a plug-in to make the playing songs go into an icecast stream. I now have mp3s playing randomly 24/7 in my house, and am really satisfied.

  6. thats not gell on The "Glory" Of Tech Support · · Score: 1

Ian's hair doesn't have gell in it. It's either glue, egg whites, or Knox (unflavored gelatin). Just wanted to clear that up. Nobody with mohawks or liberty spikes use gell.

    Oh, and first post too.

    Enough useless facts?

  7. Why payments should be way down there on Napster Clone With Pay Per Download · · Score: 1

Those payments should be way down there since the companies don't have to pay hosting costs. The database server can't be too expensive compared to moving that amount of data around.

  8. Stolen CD's? I believe it's different than that. on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 1

Stealing CD's does actual damage to the record company, they make a product with their money and get nothing back when it's stolen. Making/Downloading MP3's is more like stealing the plans in the Suburban example. The record doesn't lose money, instead they miss the money they could have earned.

  9. Free or Proprietary? on Walnut Creek CDROM And BSDi To Merge · · Score: 1

The most obvious question I can think of is if the result of the merger will stay open source, or if the code will become like BSDi where you can only re-link the binaries for your kernel. I am also wondering quite simply if the result will be a free operating system. I would guess that it wouldn't because of the BSDi employees who aren't just working on this in their free time.
