Don't you think people already know that more OSes than Unix exist when they get into college/university?
IMHO the main reasons Unix has been so popular in the educational system is not because of the obvious speed/stability/usefullness issues, but for two educational issues: 1. You have the option to learn something else than Word/Visual c++ etc. You have the option of learning an OS. You can actually teach people the inner workings of an operating system with Unix. Why? You have the code available. You actually may have some of the _people_ that wrote that code at the university.
2. Creative freedom...you give the students something to be creative with, and tamper with. Some of the students then create better code, which in turn may be added to the development tree.
How can Windows NT compare with this?
The univerities don't stay with Unix because it's quality is low. They stay with it, because they know Unix, and it actually creates the small possibility of the students learning something (gaaaawk, gasp).
But I think I'll behave, and try to think rationally.
Actually I have heard "It's not up to us to decide what lives and dies" as an argument against abortion a million times. That is just a rephrase of "we shall not play god".
Besides "not playing god" is also an argument used heavily against euthanasia.
How can you characterize euthanasia as murder? What other argument other than "let's not play god".. or "it's not up to us" do you have against euthanasia? I can think of one: It can be abused.
But I challenge you to come up with _one_ other argument for not helping my grandmother die, if she's in terrible pain, is 90 years old, and there is no hope of her living more than two weeks. If you cannot, I can rightly call you the bigot.
Unless you totally separate yourself from nature, as most christians have a tendency to do, nature HAS created that circuit board by random, by creating you, who in turn makes that circuit board.
I've always thought of the american schoolsystem as incredibly unfair (medicalsystem too) It makes no sense that you have to have rich parents or work your ass off to be able to get a good education. In Norway you can get a great education for _free_. And everyone has the option of cheap financing, for living expences.
Be is a really elegant OS, without a lot of terrible heritage. Linux and CE could probably do something like this, but why not BE? If the whole point is having a computer based solely around internetapplications, you don't really need compatibility with loads of applications. You don't need a powerful multiuser OS with a buckload of features. What you need is a simple elegant solution capable of performing excactly the task it is supposed to. And I can se BeOS doing excactly that.
Of course, they have to fix their support for DHCP ;-)
..Amd has almost no money left. I just hope they can get out the K7 and keep up with any initial problems, because we seriously NEED a competitor for Intel, and AMD is the only x86 chip maker with enough innovation. I _know_ the K7 will be a killer chip.. ..some people try to argue that "why should AMD be able to do it, when Intel isn't" The answer is simple I think: Almost all R&D at Intel is going into the Merced, and not much is left for creating a 7th generation x86 cpu.
When I first heard about someone buying Ultima Online characters I was shocked, but then I realized that this thing has happened everywhere. I remember playing AD&D and someone bought advantages buy offering plenty of snacks for the DM. The players would also trade items for soda or snacks between themselves. We ended up making this illegal, people could offer the DM something, but he could _never_ give any advantages (this part was obvious) But we _also_ made it illegal to trade items between players based on such merits..people giving other players strange gifts, not called for during the game, would be taken XP from.
This is in a way excactly the same, only there are more at stake, people offer MONEY to buy other peoples items of characters.
I find this repulsive, as people with LOADS of money will always find a way to use it, and if you can't ever spend up all of your money, why not buy yourself advantages like this? Trading characters should be illegal in the game, and people caught doing it should be banned IMHO.
People that spend a lot of time and money to build up a character should not be bypassed by some newbie with a lot of cash buying themselves into the line.
What you said about prices was right some time ago, it just isn't anymore. Things don't get cheaper these days.. You just get more for the same price. My last pc (3 years ago) cost me excactly the same as the one I bought last year (about 2000 $) and was just as "high-tech" those days. But 3 years ago I had a P-75 (ooooh)..Now I have a K6-2 350.
When a computer approaches the limit, where it may not be profitable to sell (a P-233mmx now) it just gets thrown out of the product line, and you have to buy second hand to get it. Although Cyrix is a bit behind in this respect.
If Sinclair can break through this bottom limit and produce a computer for less that let's say 250$ (I'm in Norway, so the amount may be a bit wrong)with no hidden costs whatsoever, it WOULD be something people would buy.. They won't be able to run games, but a computer capable of internetbrowsing, mail and word-processing for such a low amout would be incredible.
Nice to see someone going the other direction
on
Sinclair Does Linux

· Score: 2
It all seems to be about power these days, but when you think about it, even a P2-300 is totally overkill for some tasks like word- processing, mail, etc... Now, there has always been sort of a minimum price of a computer.. So if you wanted to buy a lower spec computer, you had to buy second hand. Now, an incredible low cost computer running linux and incredibly cheap chips, could actually break this minimum amount, and offer simple tasks for the price of let's say a playstation. For some people, one machine for one task (writing), and another one for another (games) makes sense, because they are very specialized. I'm anxious to see what they can make of this.
How about collecting all of this material, both article and comments and sending it to some of the more controversial movie producers? Perhaps all of this anger could be expressed in the media in this manner. The movie would actually _have_ to be controversial to reach the masses, and you could argue that all it would create is outrage. But perhaps it is a very small chance that some people may open their eyes.
I have a feeling it could be really annoying. Think about it, you are working on an important school project or something, and with 5 minutes interval some commercial for Adobe, Corel, LucasArts or Microsoft pops up, and you have to close it before continuing your work.
A solution like this could only possibly work in a homePC, not a corporate workstation, and why should I for instance use a program with all those annoying features, when I can either use a totally free alternative or apply a crack easily obtained from the internet. In the last alternative, the companies will be unable to reach a lot of consumers without them knowing it. It would probably also require the consumers to be online while working, and you can't really demand that people have to stay online to write a thesis or play a game.
I'm relatively new to slashdot, just recently set my preferences. But I've already found some articles that really moved me, and some of the comments are sometimes even better that the article itself. I actually wanted to comment on The story "Voices from Hellmouth" but it was so filled with comments that it really was no point.. Noone would really read my comment anyway. I guess some things really get to you, and people with a geeky background (which I partly have) is a lot more alike than imaginable, and a lot of people have gone through the same things.
