Putin is rubbing his hands together in glee. His money pit is almost finished, letting him finally go swimming in Rubles like Scrooge McDuck.
If the cost of energy continues to fall would that potentially entice the EU into forgoing improvements/maintenance on domestic (is it still considered domestic in this case?) production -- wouldn't that pretty much necessitate importing from Russia? And who is to say the current dip in prices is anything more than a blip on the radar?
Wasn't this question pretty much answered by the tepid success of sites like "The Well"? The answer seems to be: "very few will. most gravitate towards community moderated sites, while the 14 year olds go to places like 4chan".
(Top down moderation leads to a feeling of censorship, which methinks kills a site over time; as it turns off the people with the most interesting things to say.)
Interesting, the VOIP service is not regulated as a utility, and consumers have a bit more rights/protections with the copper service.
Thanks Verizon! Attempting to kill off POTS is showing dedication and appreciation for your loyal customers.
How much public money went into wiring up the country with copper anyhow? It's almost as if the telco's will take every single government handout they can get and will revel in their natural monopoly status. But when it comes to providing a basic service that they can't turn quite as much of a profit on? Drop it asap.
For me the D-day scene in Saving Private Ryan was sobering. The sound the bullets made when hitting metal hit home for some reason, in a much more powerful fashion than just seeing someone get shot. The sound they made hinted at exactly what one of those would do to you if you got hit.
I'm going to guess that the video game angle is kind of irrelevant. He took his kids from a very wealthy, stable country -- to go see how the other half live. They received first hand, a very real lesson in the way the world works.
you *might* like elder scrolls online. has a bit of that "mass PVP" battle. Good graphics, solid music -- bit of a different combat/control scheme, and the questing is basically single player.
Why does someone gaming the system and getting a fancy phone, or a new wardrobe etc draw substantially more ire from those with right/libertarian leanings, than something like the f-35 program?
I wonder what has more of an effect on the economy, lots of people cheating the system for small handouts (IE, the money is spent on useless consumer goods) OR a few large firms (raytheon, boeing, et al) bilking billions of dollars on useless weapons systems that may or may not ever be delivered, let alone needed.
In other words; Shanequia with her 5 kids, WIC, and an iphone vs Mr. Defense Contractor living in a McMansion driving an Audi.. Which is actually more of a parasite to the middle class?
in the American style, we can blindfold ourselves with "social mobility".
Was it Steinbeck who said something along the lines of "Socialism never took off in the US because the poor see themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."?
they probably approach it similarly: "Tesla, if it is wildly successful will reduce overall emissions, therefore it makes sense to take a small amount of potential damage on this plant, in order to reduce overall pollution down the line"
Not justifying it personally, but i can see why they'd reach that conclusion.
IF they address issues in a safe and responsible manner, they get slammed. If they ignore it, and a meltdown occurs, it's even worse. If they do what needs to be done to avoid a meltdown/accident, but don't tell anyone, they get accused of sweeping things under the rug.
Oh, and they get the Nimbitards all riled up if they decide to build new plants; despite in part, building the new plants to address the concerns raised by the NIMBY types over the old plants.
=/
(Yes, you could say just ditch nuclear power; but should that happen without drops in consumption, or something else to fill the gap coming online?)
This boils down to pettiness and the logic the RIAA used against piracy. Each 'freeloader' represents lost revenue. It's just as wrong here. The consumer is willing to pay 0 dollars to watch either the game in person; or ads interspersed with football (presumably they don't have cable). Clearly that's costing the NFL oodles of money.
So, move the games to cable. The consumer doesn't get to watch the game at all, the NFL loses eyeballs for those ads they would have been showing to other 'freeloaders', and no one wins. Except the cable company.
Meanwhile just about every NFL team plays this game with their host cities "Build/upgrade the stadium, at tax payer expense; or we'll move to another city".
Why do we in the west sometimes look at these phenomenally poor countries and try to limit the kind of industrial development that made our countries wealthy and prosperous?
Nicaragua is a country, not a zoo. Sure they have some pretty beaches and some bro's can go surfing there, but turning it into a shipping hub for the region will do more for them financially than a few tourists.

maybe if you're a cretin who lacks empathy.

Kudos to the dad.
That was literally yesterday if i remember correctly.

but all in all, a fun and engrossing game.
i tripped over a crack in the sidewalk on my way to work this morning and dropped my mod points, but you deserve one :(
Zoolander and his phone begs to differ.
it's like saying "candyman" 3 times into a mirror..

Heh, if only the USPS were a bank, they might get a bail out the next time they run out of money.
Was referring to Stalin, and Mao.
(that wasn't intended to be funny.)
when you murder *millions* of your own people, it's pretty easy to talk about average wealth increasing.

Why are they perpetually running budget deficits then?

before, or after they start working there?
Isn't that awesome?

Yes,much like with Regex, you now have 2 problems.
The three credit bureaus control enough as it is, thank you.
