We're [female Linux hackers] not here in force because we get the (both implicit and explicit) message that we're not wanted.
Uh-huh.
Well, actually, my point of view is, and I believe it's pretty similar for most male geeks, is that I don't care what your gender is. Unless I happen to believe that you are going to put out for me, you might as well be a guy.
In fact in this forum there's no way to know what your gender is (if you have one) in IRL! So why care?
Somebody should organize something like this. With Netscape 5 coming up, I think that'd be a good chance to bring up a new CA. By the way, you might also get away with paying money to the much more agreeable redhat and debian instead for them to include your certicates. --fred
I cna't believe he can say something like "open source programmers are good imitators, not innovators", I mean does this guy have any idea where the web came from? (Could it have come about any other way ? Think if you would have shelled out a couple of thousand for Mosaic or NCSA httpd..)
And then there was that comment about Linux, not being capable of running several applications at the same time. This guy just plainly doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. On my own home system, setup for just personal use, I have already a webserver, database (postgres), MTA's, editors, browsers, and xterm's all running at the same time (just in case anybody here that doesn't do Linux.)..
In my opinion, though, a malicious virus, that did things such as deleting files, or whatever would have to have the ability to obtain root privileges, or it basically would only be able to delete or change files that the dummy user had access to in the first place.
It sure sounds like you're confused boy! Answer me this question: do you need root privileges to create or delete files?
The reason you don't see viruses on linux is not because they need root privileges but because it's a fairly well designed system...
I think this article just ignores the two most important questions regarding the making of the nanobots.
1. How are they going to be powered? I can't picture how to wire all these together.
2. How are they going to get the smarts to know what they're supposed to do? You can't that big of a computer on the thing if it's going to be a nanobot, and yet you would have to if the robot is going to be of any use!!
APL only there to give Apple publicity!!

RMS is right the APL is not free, and it is pretty useless.
Apparently the new apple code released under the APL is limited to some low-level networking code for Macs. Now, if I remember correctly there have been independently developed versions of this for a while.
Frankly, I don't think Apple did this because they were either interested in contributing something, or to even implement OpenSource in a way were they get bug-fixes from the community. Who's going to mess around with irrelevant unnecessary, and useless (by the license, and by the existance of similar) code?.
This is not any kind of honest contribution, the only reason Apple did this was to get some publicity.

I keep seeing reposts of stories from drudge, mmmphmm, maybe it's that same money-making sensationalistic style that is taking over /.?
If it's so real, can you show me an experiment I can try out at home, and produce some energy to heat up my apartment?

duh, I get it.
You only really need this however, if your hands are totally destroyed or crippled.
Doppler radar can detect raindrops. I'm sure the same kind of radar would have no problem detecting stealth planes.
There will be a lot of things that the radar picks up that are larger than bumble bee, maybe thousands, but which ones are moving at more than 500mph?
It's not picking up by the turbulence of the air molecules, since it's not the same kind of 'turbulence' that pilots refer to on the airplane.
This kind of turbulence refers to the radio frequency spectrum.

...and then you need one of these watch devices each tuned to a different frequency controlling each nanorobot..
... I wish it were possible to make this whole thing work out but it looks impossible to me.
