  1. influencing society's behaviour on Every Road a Toll Road · · Score: 1

consider that by "taxing' road usage, you discourage people from relying on cars so much and will hopefully shift people's focus to building sustainable urban environments in the long run.

Right now it looks like elitism or big brother in the making - but in the long run cars will be less the transport of choice and society will tend back to mass transport and decentralized urban environments (mega-malls go bye-bye if people won't drive there from miles around - unless they're situated at the end of major public transport systems).

  2. They could never win on CyberPatrol Update - Mattel Wins? · · Score: 2

I can't argue the merits of this case (i.e. is it free speech or copyright infringement?), but from personal experience, I know how freaky it can be when a large organization makes legal threats. Even if Jansson and Skala are in the right, it will cost money and take up time to defend themselves; they probably don't have much of either to spare. So even if they did win, they would still lose (and forget about filing against Microsystems for "malicious prosecution" - that takes time and money too). I'm no mind reader, but I doubt they did this to get famous or get sued. They have made the public aware of an important issue, who can expect them to do more than that?

BTW America has the ACLU with expensive lawyers ready to protect the rights and freedoms of the masses but Canada's got squat, the best they offer in Canada is some friendly advice and they'll help you get in touch with a lawyer (that you'll have to pay for yourself)

I've checked netbsd.org and there don't seem to be any mini-distro's like there are for linux. Pointers, websites, FAQs on installing Free/NetBSD onto a 16MB Sandisk, where?

  4. I spoke to @home (Shaw - Canada) on @Home Gets the Usenet Death Penalty · · Score: 1

I spoke to a tech for Shaw@Home and he read off a "press statement" to me. It went "blah blah blah... @Home is aware... taking action... to prevent... no interruption to user service... blah blah". I asked for an copy of the "press statement" but he said that it was an confidential memo (that he was allowed to read to me?).

maybe I'm just missing the artistic beuaty of this creation, but I am incredibly disturbed by that haiku. My only solace is the chance that the writer has started drinking early. Hopefully very early and in insanely large quantities.

Found this in the restraining order on dibona.com:

"...This proprietary technology, including trade secrets..."

While I'm not a lawyer, it seems you are right. However, there is a counterpoint to your argument - the dreaded "shrink wrap" license (which you pretty much "agree" to upon using the software); it prohibits reverse engineering (maybe this case is about contractual breach?)
