Actually, come to think of it, a well-trained dog is probably one of your better security options.

Doesn't need to be a well-trained dog. We had 3 Siberian Huskies and they loved to bark when people walked by the front of the house while they were standing on the back deck. Pretty much everyone in the neighborhood knew we had the dogs, and despite everyone knowing they wouldn't attack anyone people were just afraid of them because of how they looked. Our dogs were not "well-trained" and were very stubborn ( they would howl back at you if you told them to sit or do anything they didn't want to do ), but people were afraid of them even though they would never attack anyone.

  2. Re:Global Traffic Manager on Best DNS Service With API Access? · · Score: 1

The API only really works if you want to manage the Wide IPs. iControl doesn't really have anything for working with the regular bind files. Plus it's a bit pricey for what it does and there are cheaper solutions that can be built rather then using a GTM.

Thanks, that's what I had been thinking, but just wanted to make sure.

Since most of the comments I was reading talked about setuid being bad and should be gotten rid of.

Isn't ping still run with setuid to root on most Linux systems?

Wouldn't this make everything unpingable ;)

Yes, was a joke, users wouldn't be able to run ping.

How would something like ping be handled ( I don't use OS X )?

  6. Re:How many licenses can fit on the head of a pin? on PHP Not Moving To The GPL · · Score: 1

gaj: BSD does nothing to restrict the "freedom of the community", whatever the hell that means. It doesn't constrain the "user" (by which I assume you mean one who chooses to modify and redistribute) to release their changes, which is probably what you mean.

Actually, I think this is generally what everyone is talking about in regards to BSD vs. GPL.
While the BSD license(s) don't restrict the community, they don't "require" that anyone give anything back. Thus the end user ( developer sense ) is free to do what they want without putting code back into the community if they make changes.

On the other hand, the GPL "requires" that the end user ( developer sense ) return code back to the community by making their code available under the same license and allowing the same benefits to others ( I say benefits, but that's subject to opinion ).
However, the GPL does place the restriction that you can't use it with non compatiable licenses.

All are fine licenses and does what everyone intends, if you dont' like it, people need to write their own code and apply what ever license they want.

  7. OpenSSH from Network Simplicity on SSH Secure Services on Windows 2K/XP? · · Score: 1

I see that everyone wants to use cygwin, but there is also OpenSSH for windows that's been ported by Network Simplicity, you can go and get it at http://www.networksimplicity.com/openssh/
It's reliable, doesn't require cygwin to be installed, runs as a service on NT4/win2k. It's also command line, and I've used it with GNU CVS as well.

  8. Novell on Is Novell Doomed? · · Score: 2

Novell supports LDAP, Oracle runs faster on a novell server then it does on NT, and is cheaper if you want, say a 5 license version (Comes with Novell 5).

I prefer a Novell server for a file server or print server then say an NT server, as with Novell inherent design, no one does much from the console, where as in some (I do say some) people running NT servers, all of a sudden start installing office and other applications on the servers.

Then again, I lock my linux box up, and don't let people do anything from the console.

Novell is just that, a file server, and for performance, it's pretty sweet. Everyone just seems to get lazy and prefer pretty graphics on there machines, nothing wrong with that, but it's a server, your not supposed to have to actually sit at it to do everything (yes yes, I know you can remotely administer NT servers, but some people like to customize desktops (ever seen catz or dogz running on your production servers? fun to play with while your waiting for something to happen))

    My 2 cents

According to VMware's download info, it's slow due to "asserts" being turned on (debugging feature).
They say this can slow things down by some percents, or upto a factor of 2, depending on what is going on. This will be turned off in the Final Commercial Release
