  1. Re:It still is on MS to Launch Paid Security Subscription Service · · Score: 1

I guess my reference was too oblique. My apologies. My point was they had released a free product, still listed as beta if I recall correctly, to the windows community and no one should have been surprised that it would become a piece of full paid-for windows security add-on. The release of Defender should have been a red flag to most people cynical towards Microsoft, which is about 3/4 of the Slashdot community. ;-)

... to anyone that heard about a product called MS Windows Defender. Seriously, did people think that was going to be a stand-alone free product for people to use? From Microsoft?

Movie criticism has always been, and always will be, some of the least objective forms. Watching a movie, or any other form of art, is a very personal thing and it's very hard not to allow personal things to cloud your judgement. So I will be seeing this flick. If for no other reason than to finish off story of that timeline in the ST universe.

  4. A topic on a game that denegrates... on One Step Closer to NWN for Linux · · Score: 2, Informative

... into a Linux-Windows testicle comparison here on /.? Who would of thought that possible?

Beyond my sarcasm, I love this game. I love it. I have played all the other recent RPG offerings from Bioware in recent memory and loved them all as well so I have a basis for comparison.

Is it perfect? Well... is what perfect? We're talking about 3(?) different components: the single player client (and campaign), the DM's client, and the toolset.

The single player campaign is great fun. I haven't even finished it completely with one character because I keep switching classes, wanting to play with them all. Even repeating the same chapter 4 times has not lessened my excitement for this game. Each time you change classes, you essentially get a new game to conquor. Not to mention going online using the player client and joining an amazing array of worlds is just so satisfying.

The DM client does have some bugs that need fixing but BW is working on it. They fixed a couple in the last patche that were considered 'game breakers' by some. I can control almost anything I want in my world. If I can't control everything I want with the default tools, I can script to make it happen. If I don't know how to script it, there is a great community of people just waiting to help create a solution to a problem. Many scripts have been posted on the forums there and cover the gamut of most DM needs.

The toolset is simply amazing. Though adding more tilesets and creatures would be beneficial (where are my kobolds? Level 1's need to be able to kill kobolds!!!) they have done very well with translating the creativity of a world-builder (DM) into something visible with the eye.

It sounds to me like most of the people bashing this game haven't delved deeply enough into the game, are stuck on comparing this game to other BW games, find a need to nitpick the small things (yes dragons should be able to fly. get over it) or just haven't played with all the different options enough (DM client, Toolset) to have enough information to base an opinion on.

The addition of the Linux based client will add a new dimension to playing this game. More people won't have to reboot to play now. Isn't that supposed to be a good thing?

Whoops! Forgot where I was. I'll prepare to get modded down immediately.

Why is it necessary for some people to find a need to 'disassemble' the story structure of a movie? Not flaming, just trying to understand. Most movies are created as a form of 'escapism' so that people, not unlike myself, can go to the theatre for 2 or 3 hours and lose ourselves in the plot of the story. If I went to movies purely to ensure continuity and that all locations at least kind of how the look in reality. Let it go! Enjoy the flick. You'll get more bang for your buck.

As just another geek posting to a site populated by geeks, I just wanted to ask the question: When do you think we are going to see a proliferation of devices for mp3 playback?
There are several on the market currently but I have yet to find one that would make me want to go out and buy it.
The only thing keeping me from going out and building my own is my meager electronics skills and the fact that I wouldn't have a warranty. I wonder if this creation will cause a 'cottage industry' utilizing the 'net for distribution.
I think I just came up with my first million dollar idea.

I am just starting to wonder what they had intended on this new service that NSI was going to offer? How much of my personal info (sure, I just moved so it's now out of date) is going to be disseminated to whoever is willing to meet their price?

I can hear spammers drool as I type this.
