  1. Linux in Utah is anything but small! on 911 Calls Linux · · Score: 1

The Linux community in Utah is anything but small . Did it occur to you before you made your post that Caldera is based in Utah Valley? You must be living in some kind of I hate Utah frame of mind, because you've missed the boat completely. We've got some very active LUGS (had Eric Raymond speak at the UofU and BYU a few months ago), and every company I've worked for since 1994 was interested in Linux. If you haven't been able to see that, then maybe it's time you stop hating Utah, and open your eyes to the Linux community here. You're definitely not going to find a more involved LINUX community in more than 70% of the rest of the U.S.A. But if Utah can't satisfy your Linux needs, then maybe you should go move next door to Linus himself. Of course, I bet you'd still complain.

  2. Re:Mormons make good neighbors. on 911 Calls Linux · · Score: 1

You must have been working for BYU, or some other institution closely related to the church. Normal business around here isn't overly LDS at all. Your 'prayer meeting' thing actually sounds a little exaggerated. Would you mind telling us exactly WHERE you were working, and WHEN? People around here are alot more normal than I've seen in the other ends of the country.

And as far as the wages thing goes - take a look at the cost of living! Utah's cost of living is pretty sane. I know people willing to take a 30% pay cut just to move to Utah, and they live in better houses in safer areas. You may complain about the $$$, but there are some things you can't trade for money - like quality of life, and not having to worry about your car being stolen or vandalized every day.

  3. Re:Merits of Java on Ask Slashdot: What is the Best GUI Framework? · · Score: 1

I agree with you 100%. Java gets bashed on a little too much by the perl lovers. Especially by the slashdot perl lovers.

I have no problem with either language, and actually prefer them both for different tasks. There are tasks that are wholly unsuited to Java, like simple text file processing and database population scripts. I usually just write those up in a matter of minutes with perl, because that is easier than having to use StringTokenizers, and the GNU's regexp package. Perl maps well to some problems, and Java to others. I prefer Java for large projects, because it is easier to build reusable frameworks, and interact with other technology standards, like CORBA.

As an employed programmer, I prefer Java, because of the monetary benefits. Java developers are in high demand where I live, and fetch a better salary than the perl jobs around here.

  4. Re:Netscape Messaging Server on Ask Slashdot: Building a Large Email Service · · Score: 1

I wouldn't recommend the Netscape's Mail Server. I work for a 30,000+ user ISP and we used to run the Netscape Mail server s/ it's LDAP directory server. The product couldn't scale up to our huge mail load, so we had to switch to Suns LDAP & Mail server SIMS. I would suggest looking into that. I don't know if anyone has ever got the free stuff to scale up that kind of size/load. We have a terrabyte of mirrored disk storage, and most of it is taken up by user mail. 25,000 mailboxes is alot more difficult than you may first expect.

Sounds like it's time for you to create a fake free email account at yahoo or somewhere like it. All my junk mail goes to one spot because I protect my REAL e-mail address by never giving it out on the web.

  6. Re:The lack of maturity of slashdotters on Leo DiCaprio in next Star Wars? · · Score: 1

Amen to that. I think that you 'average slashdotters' are really being immature about the movie. You seem to have been drooling for it for months, (even years), and then when it comes out, you can't find anything better to do than to complain about it. Jar jar this, and annakin that, and not enough maul, or character dev., midiclorians, blah blah blah. Grow up, you whiners. Star Wars after all is just a movie. It's not a religion - and it's not perfect, but no movie is. Just suspend your disbelief, and your cynicism, and enjoy it for what it is.

I have yet to see a more ingenious story line than Star Wars, and TPM fits into the other three movies pretty well.

In my opinion, TPM is awesome. I think that George Lucas has shown the world that you can make a great movie without having to overload it with profanity, nudity, or violence. The movie was great, and if you don't think so, maybe you should see it again.

  7. Time to buy stock in Novell on Novell Opens Source · · Score: 1

Novell's stock has gone up from around 14 to around 27 in the last two months. I'd say with this next move it could be going up even more. They've also been investing in RedHat, and are going to release their Directory Services for Linux - It looks like they've making some intelligent business maneuvers recently. Now I'm seriously thinking about investing in Novell.

  8. They SHOULD be afraid on MS kills Linux demo at PIII launch · · Score: 2

Oracle for Linux kicks the crap out of Oracle for NT, and that's what they're afraid of. When everyone starts seeing how good Linux is at running serious enterprise solutions, they'll switch. We should get some real numbers out on the web... I know for a fact that Oracle for Linux beats NT, AND Solaris.
