I would have to agree that there is definitely no good reason to move to Dallas itself, however the DF/W metroplex is pretty cool. Yeah, no beach, no snow skiing, pretty flat, but right now we have the best team in both the NBA and more importantly in the NHL.

Basketball sucks, but the Mavs are blowing away everyone who gets on the court with them.

Hockey rules, and the Stars are kicking some but all over the NHL right now too. When you take a look at the Stars record at home, along with the Mavs, I think it safe to say that nobody wants to come play in Dallas right now.

On a side note... All of the SW movies have had annoying, to you and me, characters. Many found C3-PO very annoying, and what about those furry little Ewoks... Jar-Jar is just continueing that SW tradition. If not for Jar-Jar, my wife would have COMPLETELY hated the movie.

I am pretty sure that I am being baited into this, but here goes anyway.

This post is way out there. First of all, I can attest to the fact that a heck of a lot more than just "a few Linux fanatics" are unhappy with Microsoft products. I work in an environment that uses both Unix and Windows, and I get repeated complaints regarding how Windows is inferior to Unix in general. The big one here is that the organization has recently converted mail to Exchange, and the complaints are loud and constant. Exchange is just one shining example of inferior MS products. Face it, NT is a joke compared to Unix, although, admittedly I am somewhat impressed with Win 2000.

As to fair competition... I don't care who you are, but what MS has done to Netscape is a load of garbage. Microsoft leveraged it's Windows monopoly by forcing vendors to install ONLY IE at the cost of a higher price tag on Windows. This is simply not fair, and a blatant abuse of the monopoly power that MS holds. Now, I admit that IE is at least as good as Netscape, but MS crammed IE down the throats of thousands of users with no obvious choice. This is what MS is in trouble for.

The government needs to reign in MS to allow the market to give a better alternative, be it Linux, BeOS, whatever, a chance in the first place. I think at this point, the only thing protecting Linux is the GPL and Linus, something that Bill has not yet figured out how to break or buy.

I am honestly not sure if breaking up MS is the right thing to do. I once thought that this would be the most desirable solution, but a breakup didn't really help with Standard Oil, and it didn't help much with Ma' Bell. I was suprised to see what MS offered in the settlement, but I am sure that their lawyer had some many loopholes that it would have been effectively meaningless. Whatever the government does, I hope it is appropriate and forward thinking.

  9. Re:Incredible Waste of Energy on Hilton Studies Feasibility of Space Hotel · · Score: 2

Get a freakin' clue. Think about what you are saying here. Currently the way to put vehicles into space is with rocket technology. These rockets, like the Space Shuttles, do not even use petroleum based propelants. These type of rocket engines are Hydrogen/Oxygen engines. The buring of this type of fuel only creates water, and does not deplete any natural resources.

I think that this is a great idea. The only way to really push space travel and exploration is to make it profitable. This means involve the commercial sector. This type of commercial endeavor can only serve to help accelerate the development of technologies which will allow space travel to become common place.

Please get off your environmental soapbox and figure out what you are talking about. If you want to make waves for something talk to your local city council about mass transit, or be an activist and by a ZEV. The space program is not going to dry up the earths natural resources, so get real.

I have to agree though, that some of the dialog is very cheesey. I did find much of the dialog rather amusing though, and somewhat clever in a simple way. I don't think it really would matter much anyway. The Athlon is probably different enough with the EV6 system bus that it would require a non-compatible BIOS and chipset anyway, requiring a different board, That, or a BIOS and chipset manufacturer would have to sink a bunch of R & D into designing a chipset and BIOS that would support both, which I am sure would be expensive.

I for one, am just happy with the thought of low cost Athlon chips next year. The thing that would upset me, is if AMD pulled an Intel and disabled the multiprocessor capabilities on these cheaper processors. This is what I would be more worried about than having to spring the $90 - $120 for a new motherboard.

This is the most interesting spin on this article I have seen yet. The idea of Linux being a unifying force in the Unix world. This could be the thing which really brings Unix to be THE dominant OS for business.

Imagine if Solaris, HP-UX, IRIX, etc. were all to be replaced with Linux. A single Unix which has the developement efforts of not only the Linux community, but all the major computer companies. I think this is something which could actually make M$ sweat.

Unfortunately, I do not see this as being a trend. IBM, HP, SUN all have way too much invested in there commercial Unix variants to drop them. As several others have pointed out, this is simply the end of Irix on Intel, not on MIPS. This is still a wonderful thing for the Linux community, and will undoubtedly lead to significant improvements to the Linux kernel, and hopefully the XFree project also.

Good for SGI. Good for Linux. Hopefully, bad for M$.

On your other question regarding the additional features of Exchange such as scheduling, I am very interested in any Unix products available with this functionality also. I would much rather have 10 kernel updates come out in 3 1/2 months, then say three come out in 10 months. If you don't need the new stuff or don't like screwing around with rebuilding your kernel, then don't worry about the new release unless you know you need it. Enough said.
