    I doubt he wants to run a solaris or unix system, since they appear to be using XP..

    I would also consider using a knoppix type CD distro, since you don't have to worry too much about rooting the image on the HD. Updates get distributed by providing a new CD. You can mount your home and applications as well, and maybe even run crossover for XP apps.

    Is there anything like knoppix for XP?

    I am not too worried about BSOD or kernel panics. At this point, these are really due to bad hardware or bad driver, both of which are relatively rare.

    I want a responsive system and XP does not provide it. I want to switch applications. I want to save files. I want to start applications And I don't want to wait seconds (5-10) to do these things.

    Terror has to be fought by international politics. Anything else will fail, because there will always be loopholes left.


    Right. The UN has been able to solve all the world's problems. We were able to talk down Germany and Japan in the 40s, so politics should be able to sort out our difference with the terrorists. I am sure they are reasonable people, willing to open a sincere dialog.

    Maybe a combined approach is best. We talk to people, we use classic police methods, and we use boatloads of technology. If that doesn't work, we still have other "options" on the table.

    Right, I have not seen XP blue screen, but it sure does hang, become unresponsive, not respond to input, and require a nice hard reset on occasion. Death but no blue screen is just as bad.

    I worked on a dual AMD athlon 1800+ running linux for the last four years. Recently I switched to a dual Xeon running XP at 3.4 or so. The linux system was more responsive, able to actually multitask (switch between appliations smoothly) and never exhibited obvious slowdowns (adding mail to a folder takes seconds on XP for some reason). Over xmas I hope to rebuild my desktop without XP...

    Why even delete blurry photos? 1 GB SD cards are cheap, you might as well keep all the shots you take, you never know what you might get.

    Why can't they track cash by serial number as well?

    Most legitimate businesses will deposit excess cash at night in a bank. It would not be much effort for a lot of large businesses to run their bills they keep onsite through a scanner every night. Most people get ATM withdrawals at a bank.

    I wonder how long cash stays out on the street before a bank sees it?

    RFID would probably be a ton easier, but I doubt we would stand for it. It is no longer a "private debt" if any idiot can scan you an see you are carrying a grand or two from a poker game, although that does sound interesting for thieves...

    I have been using almost all cash only purchases for a couple of years now, mostly for budgeting reasons (once you empty your wallet, you are done for the week, a CC keeps going).

    You can still use cash for most transactions, and that does not yet get tracked.

    Of course, if you get your cash at the bank like I do, they probably track the serial numbers from your account (too paranoid?).

    I do hit them on occasion to see what stories they have listed since they do have quantitiy.

    Now, if we only had a slashbox thingie for digg on slashdot, I would never have to go there...

    Having an engineering degree opens the door to even more engineering jobs.

    There are some "engineering" titled positions that a person with a science or math background can get into, but they are more limited than for those with an actual engineering degree.

    Why do people not consider this their Freshman year (or in high school)? Why do people not work to get co-ops or summer internships to see what the heck people in their profession actually do? I try to council my students to test out a real engineering position before they waste four years working toward a job they will hate...

    Right. Like my Treo that lasts for days (up to a week) depending on usage.

    Could be better (bigger screen, better camera) but it does all that I need in a portable device. MP3s, camara/video, PDA, read pdfs, word/excel, web, and others.

    You can do this with a Treo. They have keyboards and VGA out SD cards if you want them.

    You can do email and edit MS files, read PDFs and listen to MP3s. Great machine.

    I personally like to install firefox / mozilla / whatever in /usr/local/application or /opt/application and include version numbers

    /opt/mozilla-1.3

    /opt/mozilla-1.4

    /opt/mozilla-1.5.2

    So you get the old version installed and kept as well.

    Then I get into /usr/bin and soft link the application there

    cd /usr/bin
    ln -s /opt/mozilla-1.5.2/bin/mozilla ./mozilla

    Sometimes I keep the old version as a softlink as well

    ln -s /opt/mozilla-1.4/bin/mozilla ./mozilla.old

    Right. You only need a government permit to get access to phone encryption hardware. Just like I can have my own machine gun and bazooka, as long as I get a federal permit.

    Not many of those permits issued recently, methinks...

    Hell, they'll probably outlaw encrypting your own phone calls, next, because (the flag waving) it's (an eagle poses rampant) in (strains of The Star Bangled Banner) the (In God We Trust) best(the blue angels fly overhead) interests (cascading images of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc.) of (Betsy Ross adds another star to her handicraft) America (fanfare of fife and drum) and everybody knows the real patriots don't question any of this.


    I can't find it, but I think this is actually illegal in the US (to encrypt POTS).

    A buddy from Mexico told me a story of someone getting busted coming into the US with a end-to-end encryption device (put a cover on each end of phone, anyone between hears static). I cannot find infor on this technology or legality in the US with a quick google search so far.

    If you don't want people to listen in, don't use a phone. or the internet. or meet in a publich place. or use a computer (TEMPEST).

    One time pad is about the only way I would really trust, and I don't trust that. Good thing I have little to hide...

    I publish technical stuff. As a result, I love using LaTeX for technical stuff. Word + MathType is an abomination.

    LaTeX is open. It uses text based files. It is stable (I can latex files from a decade ago).

    I have been using LyX for nearly a decade as a LaTeX front end. Again, text file data format. They have conveerters that read the old stuff, and if they don't I can find an old copy of the LyX source if I really needed to.

    I like tgif for vector graphics/ eps files. Again, open source software that has been stable.

    And now, cygwin tools are getting developed enough that I can run my unix apps on XP. LyX has a native port with a decent installer, but other stuff usually compiles and runs out of the box. I recently even got xbattle up and running on XP, and that has not seen much development for years...

    Right, but I want full 1080P in my house on my PVR. I already have a 2600x1600 LCD which runs 1080p in a tiny window.

    Ideally, I want my cable box to fill up my PRV. And I would like to have access to pay-per view as well.

    Cable card 2 is supposed to fix some things, allowing Tivo to be used for encrypted HD and pay-per view, but I doubt it will ever work with Linux PVRs.

    Maybe I will have to break down and build my own XP based sage TV, a closed source system. They probably will have support for cable card and high def HDTV from a cable box... At least I could have a giant HD with tons of programming.

    What if I knowingly send a prank EMAIL with a goatse, tubgirl or lemonparty URL? I know if my buddy views that email on a webmail interface, I will have "knowingly embedded words into the source code of a website with the intent to deceive a person into viewing" some of the worst stuff on the internet.

    The original bill was aimed at meta tags, but I can see this being easily expanded if the language was not clarified elsewhere. Note the bill apparently doesn't limit it to minors, it is to anyone that gets obscene stuff. Scary.

    This scares me a lot...
