I have heard Kuroshin was sorta like Digg, but got run over by politcal crap and now is useless. I have not been there in forever./. still plugs along, even with a web 1.0 interface (.9 beta?)
Economic costs more than GWI but about half of Vietnam and similar to Korea, nothing compared to WWII. That page has 1990s dollars, so we are off by a decade.
Also, a lot of the money spent goes to rebuilding efforts I believe. Think of it as military costs plus the Marshall plan.

Your wife must not appreciate the convergence of the Treo. PDA, MP3, camera, word editor, excel editor, pdf viewer. It may be a bit bigger than a standard phone, but it does everything.

But now I can make calls, take pics and movies, play games, listen to mp3s, edit word files, read ebooks and pdfs.
And the battery life is great. And it has a keyboard, so no graphiti. I thought I would miss it, but I dont. I still use the stylus for some stuff, but I don't really need to.

Sure, I want 30 GB, wifi, 800x600 screen, and wireless stereo headphones, but that will come.

2D games can still be lots of fun and they don't require teams of musicians, artwork, modelers, or motion capture to produce.
3D may get there with the open engines that are around, but it still takes a huge team to get a 3D FPS mod out the door. At least you can contribute your own skin, but to create your own mod would be a real bitch.
I would love to see more cool stuff done that is creative but still uses neat 3D power, like tetris on acid or pacman but new concept. The FPS and 3D animorphic gets lame, the top downs strategy games are nice but eventually lame.
There is a game construction software package out there geared for kids, I have not tried it out. I think it is mostly 2d. As the tools improve, maybe 3D stuff will be easier.
Try word2tex and tex2word. They work great for text formatting, equations, relational links, and bibitems (copy bbl file into.tex file if you use bibtex).
Tables and figures stink for me, but it could be my use of LyX rather than plain old latex. Have not really worried too much on that end.
Chibarti software, like $90 for both but you need mathtype as well for equations. It has saved ma a lot of time reformatting stuff.
I think the imac system allows you to transfer your stuff to another computer if needed. You get a limited number of transfers per year. So as long as Apple stays in business, you can pass your collection on to a nother new machine, assuming your machine runs itunes.

LaTeX is great for complex documents so it can automatically update bib items, section number references, and equation number references.
Table support is crap. I can't embed a xls into a latex table, that would be very useful.
Image support is great and painful at the same time. EPS looks great, but not everything is an eps.

LyX is a great front end for LaTeX Processing. It helps with the learning curve.
You can still do all the stuff you want from LaTex in lyx.
There is a version that runs on cygwin with and auto installer (you need a lot of components to get stuff to work, auto install should help).
Not quite WYSIWYG, but at least your equations and tables should work ok. LaTeX is the only way for complex documents.

Look into LyX for real document processing. Great LaTeX front end, export to PS, pdf, html. Use all of the background of LaTeX.
I have written numerous papers, a thesis, and multiple books using it and they are all typeset quality.
