For around $500 you can get a Sony DB-840 Receiver. It has dolby digital and dts built in. lots of inputs (optical included). It borrow much of the same hardware from the higher end ES series and feels much more sturdy than the DE (economy series receivers). I just got one 2 days ago, really good sound for a reasonable price. Then, you can spend the other $1,000 on nice speakers...
