I can't agree with you more on this, at least. I ride a motorcycle to work and school every single day down a relatively busy interstate. I actually feel much safer on my motorcycle than I do when driving the same road in a car, because I have so much room and I can change direction/speed much more quickly than the cars and trucks out there.

As far as the "utility" of SUVs, my view is that they are just an attempt to masculinize the minivan. I would hazard a guess that over 90% of SUV owners would be served just as well, if not better, by a minivan or a wagon.

I started using LaTeX in my freshman Calculus class becuse my writing is illegible - even to me - and trying to do math in Word is just no fun at all. Since then I've found myself using Office less and less. Need a presentation for my Public Speaking class? Forget PowerPoint, use Beamer! Technical manuals for Tech Writing/Editing courses? LaTeX makes it so much easier to do those pesky TOCs, indices, bibliographies, etc. The only thing that can get more difficult is group projects, but I always try to do those by myself anyways.

The only part of Office that I still use for anything is Excel. I had to write a paper for my Algorithms class comparing different all pairs shortest path graph algorithms, so I had my benchmark program output csv files, generated the graphs in Excel, and printed them out to PDF files that I could include in my report. Once I find a good standalone (I don't want another office suite - I only use the spreadsheet!) replacement for Excel, I guess I'm home free!

Join the 21st century. At $130 for 512MB of DDR2 who gives a crap about wasting memory any more?

And hey, there's plenty of petroleum out there, so who gives a crap about driving an SUV instead of a Prius or Civic Hybrid? Just because you can waste doesn't mean you should waste, and no matter how inexpensive or ubiquitous memory (or gas) seems to be, it is in limited supply and it does cost money.

I see your opinion as being patently American, which depresses me to no end about my countrymen.

Maybe I'm just a weirdo, but I just tried out all of the English voices on the following excerpt from John Stuart Mill:

By some minds, government is conceived as strictly a practical art, giving rise to no questions but those of means and an end. Forms of government are assimilated to any other expedients for the attainment of human objects. They are regarded as wholly an affair of invention and contrivance.

It's silly to even imply that one programming language can do something that another can't. It's perfectly possible to do everything you can do in Java or Python or C++ in a language like Ook! - the question is not about possibility, it's about productivity. Python is - in my opionion and in the opinions of many other people smarter than me - capable of promoting higher programmer productivity than Java.

I come from a C++ background - I've been using it since 5th grade, before there was an STL - and I prefer Python's syntax over that of the curly-bracket-semicolon languages. Familiarity doesn't preclude the recognition of Python as a syntactically cleaner language.

Also, those smart coders who use Java usually don't know only Java. One of the hallmarks of a good programmer, in my book, is competancy in - if not mastery of - as many languages as possible. Even if you never use half of the languages you know, you will be able to analyze problems from many different angles to find the best solution.
