  1. bayesian filtering forgotten already? on Haiku vs Spam · · Score: 1

    but how about some
    frequency based filtering
    like that other post

    haiku signatures
would be to easy to fake
    for this to be good

  2. What's next, a handshake? Pinky-swear? on Email, a Legally Binding Contract? · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's ridiculous. Email can be easily forged. And I would think a legally binding contract would somehow involve a lawyer.

  3. Implications on WLAN Visualization Meets GIS Mapping · · Score: 1

Would this mean crackers could more easily access weak networks (ie those w/o VPN)? And what about services designed for free web access through wireless LAN?

  4. Problems with DVD Rentals on Review Of Netflix DVD Rental Service · · Score: 1

Somehow I don't think that DVD rentals will take off the way VHS rentals did. About half the time either I or a friend rents a DVD it is scratched to the point of being unusable. When burnable DVDs get cheap enough to be used frequently people we really start in on copying DVDs, so rental places won't have a place. If I want to watch a DVD I don't have, I'll borrow it from a friend.

  5. Jeez, what a doofus I am on Gifts for Valentine's Day, 2002? · · Score: 1

Well, I'm corny, but what I mainly want is my gift for her to be well recieved. It's so hard to come up with original gift ideas that are good that if she really, honestly likes it, that's one of the best gifts I can get. I mean, you can't _not_ give flowers, but something else must also be given. But besides that, I guess I really like a good massage, and those can be hard to get. My girlfriend hates computers (ugh!), so I think it would a cool pseudo-present for her to let me teach her some computer stuff or at least give them a chance. I think books always go over well, when given in combination with other things. Poetry is good, and so are foreign language books (if both speak the language). I think one important thing to remember for a good Valentine's day is surprise. Whatever the gift, if there is sufficient surprise the effect is amplified. I'm a pianist and composer and my girlfriend like my music so I'm making her a CD of my playing with some other songs she likes, cover art and all that too. I also think I'll make a cheesy card...sometimes humor is good. That is all.

  6. Penalities for Violations? on 9th Circuit: Thumbnails Are Big Enough For Fair Use · · Score: 2, Interesting

What penalties can be enforced for a violation?

  7. Local Yocal on Toshiba Latest Casualty of DRAM Price Wars · · Score: 1

I live in Manassas, Virginia; it has a history:
First, IBM sold out to some unknown company, then they sold out to Lockheed Martin, then they sold out to BAE. Now we have the same problem with Dominion Superconductor. And shoot, I wanted to get a job there.

  8. Everything Depends on Do You Buy Into Management Methodologies In IT? · · Score: 1

rant { To start off I would like to say that making personal attacks is no way to begin a logical (or any kind) of argument. Everyone's (well maybe not that Gate's guy's) opinions are valid. There are ignorant consultants and ignorant programmers. } All management methodologies have a place in business. The one that fits a situation is the one that breeds creativity and positive attitudes. This is a hard goal to reach with a large number of people. At IDEO the management is very liberal: small randomized teams work on projects (under little supervision), no one gets fired...that sort of thing. Because it is a company made up of very well educated (and slightly eccentric) people with IT backgrounds, a nd it is in Silicon Valley, this methodology fits. At QED Consulting (I know it's a consulting place...bear with me!) has a moderatly liberal workplace, and because it is made up of well to moderatly educated Gen-Xers to Baby Boomers (about 15-20) this older style of management fits. I am not very well informed as to the variety of methodologies or their implementation, but success depends not only on the person who is in charge, but the type of people and the way the people work together. Pardon my lack of knowledge.
