Hey, man, didn't you see Independance Day? Jeff Goldblum's Mac Powerbook interfaced with the aliens' computer just fine (too bad those things can't really interface with anything down here without some doing...)! Of course they use the same technology we do! Even if they don't, I'm sure they have the Hale-Bopp cult to do their translations, with Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa for good measure.
I have a great idea. Since BO2K is open source, why not port it to Linux to run SMS capabilities from a Samba server? Sounds like a great project to me, if only I could program.....
Blizzard Entertainment, during the first week of release for Starcraft for Windows, had the program send a copy of the windows registry (without informing the user) to Blizzard whenever a luser logged on to battle.net to play SC over the internet. I remember a massive stink over that....They claimed that they used the information for "support" purposes. Who knows what they really did? The code was closed source, so you couldn't tell.
But I don't think this is what that article was saying. It looks like it's talking more about open source hacker tools, and how they can be easily modified quickly.
Believe it. By federal law governing nuke plants, there must actually be *lower* radiation levels at a nuke plant than normal background radiation, or so I've heard from an expert on the subject.
Sounds like governments need to crash, like in Snow Crash, and go 100% commercial. General Jim's Defense System? Admiral Bob's Global Defense? Central Intelligence Corporation? Burbclaves? Just so long as we don't have 8 foot tall bikers with H-bombs and computer programs that can scramble brains....
The report read that Linux has bad or worse SMP than the rest. But we knew this! The 2.0.36 kernel that comes with Red Hat 5.2 doesn't do SMP very well. No surprises here, no arguments. But I'd like to see next year's report, when they analyze Linux with a distro using the 2.2.x kernel. Then we'll see.
But we *are* a bunch of zealots. We're actively fighting for a cause which is almost religious to us, and in some cases (like RMS), IS religious, if taken to the far extreme. Personally, I don't like m$. I like Linux. I think Linux will eventually take over as the no. 1 OS. I want this to happen. But who gives a rats arse what we call it, so long as it works great, and we can hack it to shreds?
I disagree with a lot of RMS' philosophies. I think that companies should be able to sell the stuff they produce, software or not. If they don't want to open the source, then fine. Let them. It won't make any difference to me, because I know that an OSS alternative will be forthcoming, if not already out.
RMS is a kook in my opinion. A necessary one, but a kook none the less. Is he arrogant? yes. Do I think he goes overboard? Yes. Would I have it any other way? No. Someone has to fight for the extreme to make the moderate be the moderate.

The Stand by Steven (Stephen?) King.
I completely agree with you. The more I see, hear, and read, the more I feel that George Lucas is a complete asshole. I've loved SW dearly since birth, but c'mon. Jar-Jar? Lucas blaming the fans on the net (read: US) for the silicon spawned monstrosity sucking so badly? George being totally controlling over this? No SW on DVD until 2006???? No Indiana Jones on DVD? Lucas, the more you tighten your grip, the more fans will slip through your fingers....

Wiggles (the pathetic Linux luser)
Case in point:

Wall Street types are all microsofties because Billy Boy makes them money. It's not surprising that they didn't go up much.
1st post?

Hey, Check out Lokisoft. They're writing a version of Civ for Sparc Linux, as well as Alpha. Not sure about ppc, though...
Or Betamax tapes :)
But you can still get the 16 page summary in PDF just for registering. Look on the site harder.

So write it!

Probably because they're afraid of some cracker checking out the source code and figuring out how to circumvent the security.
