  1. Sneaky... on Ban On Photographing Near Gulf Oil Booms · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wonder how long it will take for the geniuses in the field to figure out that if you create a barrier out of booms, along the width of the beach, you've now effectively blocked off the entire area.

You could effectively totally block several miles of beach by the simple placement of a few 100 feet of boom on either end. No different than a police barrier or crime scene tape. "Do not pass".

Except that's not what they're selling us here, supposedly. 65 feet my ass.

  2. My guess... on Doctor Slams Hospital's "Please" Policy · · Score: 1

Just a stab in the dark here but here's my theory:

Lab and tech are short-staffed on weekends and make a request of management to have docs not submit requests that can wait until Monday.

Management agrees, says they will have Docs only submit urgent request, and for some boneheaded reason decide the best way to do this is have urgent requests marked "Please" instead of, oh, I don't know... maybe "urgent"?

Docs rightly feel this is stupid, more because of the choice of words than because of the principle behind it. Probably also quite a bit of "If I didn't need it now, I wouldn't request it now" sentiment.

  3. They chose to make this law more evil than needed on House Votes To Expand National DNA Arrest Database · · Score: 1

How hard would it have been to include language that forces the DNA sample and any record of it to be destroyed if your arrest does not result in a conviction?

  4. To cap or not to cap on T-Mobile's First HSPA+ Modem Goes On Sale Sunday · · Score: 1

Guess I will stick with my unlimited EDGE for $20/month then, TMO. It may only be a pathetic 20kbyte/sec or so but I can do that speed all month long for $20, no caps.

  5. The more things change... on US Government Poisoned Alcohol During Prohibition · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's a good thing we no longer do things like that. You know, like add tylenol (APAP) to opiate painkillers so that if you abuse them you die of liver failure. Cause that wouldn't be cool at all.

  6. Re:Next week's launch?!? on Halo 'No Longer Just a Game' For Microsoft · · Score: 1

Yes, almost funny that their #1 exclusive got leaked again. At least this time it's only a few days. If I remember correctly Halo 2 was leaked WAY in advance (but, oddly enough, in French, made for a very humorous game - "Ah Oui Chef!"). But even so, MS is probably fuming at all the (dumb) people playing it on live already...

  8. Insurance company? on Remote Breathalyzer · · Score: 1

How about this is installed on a voluntary basis? Tell your insurance about it and get a lower premium. Sounds like a much better idea than forcing it on people.

I'm willing to bet that given the location of the sensor, and some duct tape it is quite easy to defeat as well.

What if your significant other (who had a bit too much to drink) is sleeping it off on your shoulder? You telling me the sensor can tell the difference? If so I am very impressed. Combine this with some local PD that goes in a little too heavy handed when they get that sensor notification and I see some people winning the litigation lottery.

As always, vote with your wallet, if you don't like the idea of this, don't buy a car that has it.
