Hey, this makes a whole lot of people inside the US irritated, too! Just because we have stupid people here in the US doesn't mean the rest of Americans like what the stupid people say.
Unfortunately, the artists no longer have any rights in regards to their music. All works produced while under a contract with the record company become the work of the record company, forever. Unless they sell the rights.
I remember when CDs first came out and the record companies were saying how CDs would lower prices because it costs much less to physically produce CDs than cassettes. If this is true, why are all those music compilations I see on TV more expensive on CD? $$$$$
I'm an IT consultant for one of the big 5 consulting companies, and our work ethic is to make our clients' issues our issues. Of course, it would be naive to believe that everyone in the company follows this directive, but a lot of us do try.
I have seen a lot of clients jaded at the mere mention of "consultant", mainly due to prior experiences with these sub-par idiots who do rip off their clients. After being burned one, two, three times, a company becomes very reluctant to use consultants again. We have a hard enough time try to get new business; I can only imagine how some of these shoddy consultants ever get work again.
Basically, it comes down to smart business and proper ethics. If you screw someone for a quick buck, your credibility and future business opportunities go down the drain.
Just like most things in life, the best things are neither free nor easy- and in this case it is a job well done, the satisfaction deriving from that, and good continued business.
Ok, 1st, what if you don't have a cable connection? Then, what if all the other parameters are not met? Your Dreamcast is not compatible with the current standard? "Playstation 8 is only available with SONET 192, sorry for all those previous users!"
I can not really think of a good reason why they would want to do this. Perhaps it is an attempt to keep it controlled under each distro as it is "officially" released for each distro.
Maybe they just slipped up?
Conspiracy alert: perhaps the popular distros are being held back in order to sue offenders as they put it on "illegal" distros? Nah, that only happens in the US!:)
The whole damn thing (1st article, or all who called the article) was about oil drilling! Yet somehow everyone is talking about MS and other tings. Not even ONE comment about the oil? Let's see you folks run anything on MS "coal-producer".
Yes and no. For shielded cable, long length and wide gauge is fine. But if the cable is not shielded, longer cables lengths invite more frequencies to hop onto the cable.
Considering the quality of most main stream movies now-a-days, I'll take home-made movies. Of course this is coming from a guy who likes "Blair Witch Project" and the original "Evil Dead". Take it or leave- just no flaming on how bad Blair Witch was; I've heard your arguments and rhetoric, and I still like it.
I am not sure I agree. Though it sounds like you have much more experience in the high end, I think a well done multi-track soundtrack with multiple sound sources would be better than even the greatest of stereo. I espouse this belief due to the fact that (once again, if done correctly) multiple (physical) sound sources would more accurately reproduce an immersive sound experience.
With THX theaters, I totally agree! Many people equate loud sound with good sound- total bs.
BTW, what was the best sound system you have ever heard?
Or you could just raise your kids the way you want, explain to them that various people have different views and will try to subvert you to their beliefs, and stay involved with your child.
Of course, my mom, who has been an elementary school playground monitor for 18 years, keeps telling me that the school is going to "hell in a handbasket".
Next time, try presenting your views with less rhetoric and degredation, and you will most likely get your point across.
Of course, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING POSTING THIS CRAP HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes and no. There is no such thing as a THX "solution". But there is such a thing as THX certified components. In the (non-theater) world, there are 2 levels of THX- select and something else whose name evades me for the moment.
Each component type, say a receiver, must meet certain technical details such as power per channel, types of decoding, dB rolloff at certain frequencies, etc. If a component meets all the specs it is then THX certified. Due to the requirements, certified equipment tends to cost more. Of course, the pretty logo will probably increase sales.
Now, all of this is well and good; but, it doesn't automatically mean that some THX equipment will sound great. A great receiver with $3 speakers is just gonna blow. Plus such things as room size, speaker placement, acoustics, etc., are important to the final sound of the system.
Which brings me to my main point (finally!). It's great and all to have equipment that meet certain technical requirements, but watching a DVD on a PC is most likely to be 1/10th as good as watching a DVD on a mid-sized TV with an ok stereo system.
Analysis- a bunch of technical specs aimed at a less than suitable platform to generate marketing hype. Yes, better than the standard PC with average monitor and speakers, but I'll take my home theatre (such as it is) any day.
Yup. Unisys (I think) owned the patent and was going to try and charge for every GIF out there. Forced the creation of PNG- basically the same but without the proprietary algorithm.
I'm not clear on the technical details of the patents, but how do you patent something like indexing? Is the code patented, or is anything that indexes in violation. And this goes for the rest of their patents.
And how would they enforce these patents? And is the scope for their patents only for the web? the 'net? All media?
"Volume constraints mean that you can buy an x86 workstation that will wipe the floor in almost every performance category excepting Altivec-optimised routines since SSE2 isn't widely supported) with the fastest Mac system available for the same price or less"
Yup, my 286 just kills my G4! Kills, I tells ya! Ok, enough sarcasm. But seriously, PPC/Apple performance more or less wipes Wintel performance in all real life tests and/or ancedotes. Now WinAmd is a bit better, but I think I'm the first to even mention AMD, so blah!
No f'n shite! I got a PII at work running at 400-some MHz, yet my G3 300 MHz Mac just toasts my work machine. Same RAM, similar HD, yet I wait a whole bunch longer on the Windows machine hitting the right mouse button then on my Mac (Kensington Mouseworks to emulate the right button).
Just trying to type this post I had 3 freezes from HDD activity! I'm glad all my extra MHz (4th freeze, pos) is going to rendering text on the screen.
Good point. No paper output that I can see, but maybe an internal printer and collection bin. Definently need paper backup- lightning strike > voltage surge > boom!
We have touch screen voting in my home town (suburb of Philadelphia). Very nice- easy to use, no acrobatic chads, no waiting till 4AM just to be told "we still don't know what the heck we're talking about, but by God, we're gonna keep on talking!"
And for the Florida voters it can be customized- large print and/or photos for the elderly, multiple confirmation for each choice ("you have picked bob as dog catcher- is this correct? [YES] Are you sure?")
I actually got paid to do this

Back in '98, my company won a contract to do telecomm surverys for all government buildings in NYC. So in addition to traipsing through the phone closets, we got to poke around in the basements looking for distribution points and the like. This wasn't quite the same, but it was fun to be on the 3rd (4th?) basement sublevel of the World Trade Center.
The other neat building was the DEA's building. While having a smoke outside waiting for our GSA contact to show up, we watched a bunch of undercover agents gear up for a sting or a raid. For all you crack dealers out there- don't screw with these guys! Anyway, inside the building each door to the stairwell was locked by both a biometric hand scanner and a keypad. Funky.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to do the FBI or the Secret Service departments. They probably would be just as good.
"I understand *** needs to protect there trademark as you would want to protect your FCC assigned call from other people using it, I'm satisfied hat this matter is over, and hope everyone will consider that the attorney was doing his job and doing it well."
That would be interesting to see QVC go after the FCC to keep *QVC* from being assigned. "Oh, you're suing us? Hey Bob, go yank QVC's broadcast license!"
One bit o' info about the DVD mastering process- with AltiVec the compression time needed is something like 1/10th that of other processors. I think the spec was reduced from 25 times the video length to 2 times the video length. Of course, the 25 times spec was probably for a 386;).

This may have been mentioned already, but the ABM treaty ended at the same time the USSR did. No country... no treaty..

I guess it could, but I consider midsize to be in the 30+ inch range. Not really based on any true metric, so take it for what it is... just a number!

Damn, you are some WICKED type of moron (regardless of how you feel towards homosexuality, this guy is way past anything even palatible).
Yes and no. For shielded cable, long length and wide gauge is fine. But if the cable is not shielded, longer cables lengths invite more frequencies to hop onto the cable.
And yes, Onkya has some pretty tasty equipment!
Are you kidding?!?!?!
400 watts on the sub will probably outrate 90% of peoples' home theater's sub. 60 watt sats is a lot, also. How big are those things?
Considering the quality of most main stream movies now-a-days, I'll take home-made movies. Of course this is coming from a guy who likes "Blair Witch Project" and the original "Evil Dead". You get the idea.
Just wondering if this guy works for Intel or anything.
